Minimum wage: Working People United explains why Nigerians should back Tinubu’s re-election bid

Working People United has explained why Nigerians should not hesitate to throw their weight in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The National Coordinator of WOFU, Comrade Prince William Akporehe, said that Tinubu’s economy is painful, but avoiding it would have plunged the country into worse hardship.

He disclosed this during the WOFU’s historic Good Governance Summit 2026 in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, President Tinubu’s vow to review workers’ minimum wage is an indication that he meant well for Nigerians.

He noted that WOPU has come to stay to ensure good governance and the implementation of reforms that will be good for all workers and Nigerians.

“Yes, for us as working people, united for good governance, the message and understanding are clear: reforms are painful, but avoiding a reform would be more dangerous.

“However, reform must deliver visible and tangible results for all. That is why our strategic message here today is simple: support continuity and demand to do so. We support continuity because national stability matters.”

During the event, Rt. Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Tinubu, who served as the chairman of the event, said that the N70,000 minimum is no longer viable, heralding plans to review it upwards.

The minister of labor and employment, Mohammad Dingyadi, on his part, reiterated commitment by the Tinubus to translate policies into increased productivity, social protection, economic opportunities, and dignity for the working people.

“Every major transformation requires courage, patience, sacrifice, and political responsibility. However, the objective of the federal government has remained clear to build a stronger, more productive, and more resilient economy that works for all Nigerians in the area of labor and employment,” he said.

Speaking in an interview after the event, the National Coordinator of Operations and Programs and also President of Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners, Billy Gillis-Harry, called for stronger participation of Nigerian workers in government policy formulation.

Gillis-Harry said government policies would struggle to achieve their objectives without the support of workers across different sectors of the economy.

“The simple goal is to let working people buy into the policy formulation of any government. Especially in this government of the president, where difficult decisions that should have been taken years ago are now being taken to reshape Nigeria. If the working people don’t buy into that, the chances of these policies coming to fruition will be almost zero,” he said.

He explained that the Working People United movement was created to ensure workers have a seat at the decision-making table rather than merely reacting to policies after they have been introduced.

According to him, the organization brings together workers from different professions, including farmers, traders, artisans, oil workers, and other stakeholders, to contribute to governance.

“We are calling on all the working people in this country to come together as one, review the policies of the government, understand the benefits therein, and look at the areas that can also be inimical to us as Nigerians so we can make our inputs and corrections. We do not want to come to the pages of newspapers to argue about policies; we want to be in the room, on the table, with a chair and a voice,” he stated.

Gillis-Harry said discussions at the conference, attended by more than 29 labor and union leaders, focused on assessing the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s policies and identifying ways to improve implementation.

He maintained that an informed electorate and active worker participation would help shape a stronger Nigeria.

“Nigeria is a superpower waiting to happen, and this is the beginning. Working people united will support the President Bola Tinubu-led government for continuity in 2027 and also hold the government responsible for delivering on its promises,” he added.

On the ongoing discussions over a review of Nigeria’s minimum wage, Gillis-Harry welcomed remarks by the president’s Chief of staff that the current N70,000 minimum wage is no longer sustainable.

While noting that negotiations involving the government, organized labor, and other stakeholders were already underway, he said his personal view was that the minimum wage should be doubled.

“One man working as the breadwinner of the family cannot have a sustainable livelihood on N70,000. In my personal opinion, it may be good to review it by another 100 per cent. N140,000 may not be a bad place to start,” he said.

He argued that rising transportation, feeding, housing, healthcare, education, and other living costs justify an upward review of workers’ pay.

According to Gillis-Harry, private sector employers in some parts of the country already pay between N120,000 and N130,000 for jobs such as drivers, suggesting that the government should adopt a wage structure that reflects current economic realities.

He expressed confidence that the Tinubu administration would continue engaging workers on key national policies and said the reforms, though painful, would ultimately deliver long-term benefits for Nigerians.

“It is painful now, but just like a woman going through labor pains eventually smiles after childbirth, that is what this experiment is. We have come together under the aegis of Working People United to ensure President Bola Tinubu is given another shot to see these policies through to fruition for a better Nigeria,” Gillis-Harry said.

DAILY POST reports that the event was a gathering of workers across Nigeria for good governance and launching of a seal for responsible citizens of Nigeria.

Nigerian Govt should make Senate part-time work – Ndume

The lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume, has called on the Nigerian government to make the Senate a part time work, where lawmakers only get paid when they have a sitting at the plenary or committee level.

Ndume made this call on Friday while responding to questions in an interview on Trust TV.

According to him, the Senate and the entire legislators do not go to office on a daily basis, but only during plenary sessions and at the various committee levels.

He said, “To me, I said it, what are we doing? We have been on recess for several times. Let us be paid by sitting. If you sit, you get paid. If you are not sitting, you are not paid.

“And to me, we can even make the National Assembly to work part time. On Wednesday, we all assembled for an emergency meeting for this year; important national issues, that is the state policing even though I have reservations as to the speed and the way they are doing it.

“Senate is a committee of elders. You just don’t come one day, sit down because the President wants state police, you just pass it overnight.

“You are supposed to sit down, deliberate on it and get the input. We have passed the bill. Has the state police taken off today?”

  • Bauchi will be ‘hotter’ for drug dealers – NDLEA boasts

Bauchi will be ‘hotter’ for drug dealers – NDLEA boasts

The Bauchi State Command of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has seized more than 2.2 tonnes of illicit drugs and intensified its crackdown on traffickers since October 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday to mark the 2026 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the State Commander, Commander of Narcotics Hassan Yaqub, said the command recovered 2,248.591 kilograms of assorted narcotics in the last seven months.

According to him, the seizures included Cannabis sativa, methamphetamine (ICE), Rohypnol, crack cocaine, tramadol, codeine cough syrup and other psychotropic substances.

Yaqub said the event, themed “World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses,” provided an opportunity to review the command’s performance in combating drug trafficking and abuse.

“Today is another opportunity for us to assess our operations and determine whether we are doing enough in our collective efforts to tackle drug abuse and trafficking in Bauchi State and its environs,” he said.

The commander maintained that drug abuse remains a major driver of criminal activities, stressing that families continue to bear the consequences.

“There is a clear nexus between drugs and crime. Families are losing their loved ones to drug abuse. That is why everyone must join hands with us to confront this menace,” Yaqub said.

Describing illicit drugs as “the gateway to many crimes,” he assured residents that the command would not relent in its enforcement efforts.

“We remain resolute and committed to arresting drug traffickers, seizing illicit substances and confiscating properties linked to this criminal enterprise. We will not be distracted by anyone in carrying out our lawful duties,” he stated.

Reflecting on his seven months in office since assuming leadership of the command on October 31, 2025, Yaqub attributed the achievements to the dedication and resilience of the agency’s officers and personnel.

“The successes recorded so far are a product of the hard work, commitment and resilience of our officers. We will continue to intensify our operations and achieve even greater results,” he said.

The NDLEA boss also issued a stern warning to drug dealers operating in the state.

“Bauchi State is going to be much hotter for drug dealers and their collaborators in the coming months. We urge all stakeholders to support us in driving these criminal elements out of the state,” he warned.

Providing an update on prosecutions, Yaqub disclosed that the command has secured 79 convictions, while 74 cases are pending in court. He added that 105 fresh cases have been filed, with 12 suspects currently in detention.

He also revealed that operatives uncovered a Cannabis sativa plantation in Bogoro Local Government Area, where one suspect was arrested and 108 kilograms of cannabis were recovered.

On rehabilitation efforts, Yaqub said the command had continued to provide treatment and counselling for persons with drug dependence.

“Between November 2025 and June 2026, we successfully treated and rehabilitated 67 persons with drug dependence, while 12 others are currently undergoing residential counselling and rehabilitation,” he said.

Highlighting the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, the commander said the command had organised more than 300 sensitisation programmes in schools, churches, mosques, motor parks and other public places across the state.

“Through these campaigns, we have reached about 1.5 million people across Bauchi metropolis and the 20 local government areas of the state,” he added.

Yaqub concluded by appreciating the media, community pharmacists, the Bauchi State Government, National Youth Service Corps members and other stakeholders for their continued partnership in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
