Nigeria Navy recovers 52,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy has recovered an estimated 52,600 litres of suspected stolen crude oil and other materials intended for illegal refining operations in Rivers.

This is contained in an operational report by the Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Friday in Abuja.

According to Folorunsho, the operation was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS, PATHFINDER of Operation DELTA SENTINEL.

He said that, acting on credible intelligence, personnel conducting routine anti-crude oil theft patrols, intercepted two wooden boats positioned to offload suspected petroleum products at Ogoloma in Okrika Local Government Area.

“A subsequent search revealed about 250 sacks containing approximately 52,600 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil,” he said.

He added that the patrol team also recovered materials used in the construction of illegal refining sites, indicating preparations to expand illicit refining activities within the area.

He said that the operation disrupted another attempt by criminal elements to feed Nigeria’s illegal refining value chain, denying economic saboteurs the crude oil and equipment required to sustain their operations.

Folorunsho further said that the recovered products and associated materials were handled in accordance with extant anti-crude oil theft procedures.

According to the director of naval information, the successful operation underscores the navy’s sustained operational tempo in dismantling crude oil theft networks, disrupting illegal refining logistics, and protecting Nigeria’s critical oil and gas infrastructure.

He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven operations and interdicting all forms of maritime economic sabotage in support of national economic security.

Drastic action needed to contain insecurity in Nigeria – VC, UNICAL

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has said that drastic measures should be taken to address the heightened insecurity in Nigeria.

He described insecurity as a key national challenge that demands drastic and sustained measures if Nigeria is to achieve meaningful development.

Offiong spoke during the 2nd International Hybrid Conference 2026, organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, with the theme: “Insecurity and National Development: Is the Nigerian State at a crossroad?”

He said issues of insecurity cannot be treated with kid gloves, stressing that government, institutions, and citizens must adopt bold strategies that address both the immediate threats and the root causes.

He was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Linkages and Collaborations, Prof. Anthony Eneji.

Offiong said national development cannot thrive where lives and property are not secure.

He said that the Department of Criminology and Security Studies can complement the state security role, disclosing that UNICAL has positioned itself as a hub for research, training, and policy advice on contemporary security issues.

According to him, the Department is producing graduates equipped with modern knowledge in crime prevention, intelligence analysis, and conflict management.

Prof. Offiong added that UNICAL is open to collaboration with security agencies at all levels to bridge the gap between academia and practice.

By working closely with the military, police, and other security institutions, he noted, UNICAL can help translate academic findings into practical tools for intelligence gathering, threat assessment, and community engagement, ensuring that solutions are grounded in evidence and tailored to Nigeria’s realities.

Chairman of the Conference and Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegbua, said to effectively tackle security challenges, there is need for proactive and technology-driven policing strategies.

He recommended the establishment of a dedicated state cybercrime and digital evidence unit to investigate digital offences and support intelligence-led operations.

The Police boss said security agencies should also prioritise regular training of officers on digital evidence collection, preservation, and analysis to improve investigations and ensure the successful prosecution of offenders.

He added that building stronger liaison and operational collaboration with sister agencies will enhance intelligence sharing and enable coordinated responses to security threats.

CP Afegbua stressed that security is too important to be left to security agencies alone, noting that while other law enforcement agencies play critical roles, sustainable security ultimately requires collective responsibility from government, institutions, and citizens.

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Kano State.

Obasanjo was received by Kwankwaso alongside the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The visit was confirmed in a statement issued by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, who described the meeting as an occasion for cordial interactions and warm exchanges between the political leaders.

However, details of the discussions held during the closed-door meeting were not disclosed.

Kwankwaso, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term in office between 2003 and 2007, has maintained a longstanding political relationship with the former president.

The meeting has further fuelled speculations about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in light of reports suggesting efforts to strengthen opposition collaboration.

NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is widely regarded as a close ally of Obasanjo, who publicly supported him during the 2023 presidential election.

CCB verifies asset declarations of 108 high-risk public officials

The Code of Conduct Bureau has completed the verification of asset declarations submitted by 108 high-risk public officials, including ministers, permanent secretaries and heads of government agencies, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability in public service.

The Chairman of the CCB, Dr. Abdullahi Bello, disclosed this on Thursday during the graduation ceremony of the second cohort of Agora Policy’s Policy Writing Fellowship and the unveiling of the Local Governance Accountability Portal and Policy Registry in Abuja.

According to Bello, the verification exercise covered 19 ministers, 37 permanent secretaries, 20 heads of agencies and 32 other senior public officials.

He also announced that the bureau’s Online Asset and Liabilities Declaration System had been fully developed and was ready for deployment and testing.

The platform is expected to serve as a central database for asset declarations of public servants across the country.

Bello said the bureau had intensified enforcement efforts, leading to the forfeiture of several assets, including a property in London, while a number of cases had been referred to the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

He revealed that the Chief of Staff to a state governor was recently arraigned before the tribunal, describing the action as evidence of the bureau’s commitment to holding public officers accountable regardless of status.

Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, represented by the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, described the portal as a game-changer in promoting transparency and accountability at the local government level.

He noted that local government finances had long remained shielded from public scrutiny, adding that the portal would empower citizens with information needed to track public spending and demand accountability.

Earlier, the Executive Director of Agora Policy, Waziri Adio, said the platform was created to address the accountability gap at the grassroots despite increasing allocations to local governments.

Adio, however, lamented that increased funding had not translated into improved governance and service delivery at the local level.

‘Prophet wasn’t recognized’ – Catholic Priest on Nnamdi Kanu’s warnings

A Catholic Priest, Fada Angelo Chidi Unegbu has claimed that the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu had warned Nigerians about terrorism before the security crisis escalated but he wasn’t heard.

In a post on his official Facebook page on Friday, Fada Angelo, who described the IPOB leader as a prophet, lamented that his warning was not taken seriously.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu warned us. The people prayed for a prophet. A prophet was sent, but they did not recognize him”, he said.

The cleric asserted that those who ignored Kanu’s warning about the escalating violence in the country were now “praying for a messiah to deliver them from insecurity, terrorism, and oppression.

“Yet perhaps the answer they seek has already been placed before them”.

Fada Angelo declared that “no one is coming to save us from this present security challenges. We are the ones we have been waiting for”.

He called on Nigerians to “stand together in courage, unity, and purpose”, stressing that “when the people unite, fear loses its grip, and darkness gives way to light.

“Our liberation begins the day we choose to stand together. I am happy many brains have been returned to factory settings. That is the first condition”.
