Niger troops arrest suspected terrorists after attack at Niamey airport [VIDEO]

Nigerien security forces have launched a series of arrests following Thursday’s explosion and gunfire incident around Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, the country’s capital.

According to security analyst Brant Philip, arrests are ongoing in parts of the city, targeting individuals suspected of collaborating with those behind the attack on the airport.

In a post on X, Philip said security operations are continuing across the capital, while cautioning that such crackdowns sometimes result in the arrest of innocent people or mob attacks on individuals without verified evidence linking them to the incident.

The arrests come amid heightened security measures following heavy gunfire and explosions that rocked the area surrounding the airport earlier on Thursday, triggering panic among residents and prompting the deployment of troops to strategic locations across Niamey.

Security sources said the disturbance began in the early hours of the day, with gunfire reportedly lasting for more than two hours. Authorities had not issued an official statement as of press time, leaving the exact nature of the incident unclear.

Residents were advised to remain indoors as security forces established cordons around key locations, including the Hospital Roundabout, while heavily armed troops and military vehicles were deployed at checkpoints leading to the Presidential Palace.

Diori Hamani International Airport, located about 10 kilometres from the Presidential Palace, also hosts Air Base 101, one of Niger’s most important military facilities. Investigations into the incident remain ongoing, and no group had claimed responsibility at the time of filing this report.

  • UAE Announces Social Media Ban For Children Under 15

UAE Announces Social Media Ban For Children Under 15

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has banned children under the age of 15 from using social media platforms, joining a growing list of countries including Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada introducing age-based restrictions amid rising concerns over child safety online.

The UAE Cabinet, chaired by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, approved the resolution, which prohibits anyone below 15 from creating, using or operating personal accounts on social media platforms.

The ban restricts access to social interaction, publishing, commenting, sharing and joining public groups or open channels.

The resolution applies to all social media platforms that enable users to create accounts or personal profiles, engage in social interaction, publish or share content, or that rely on algorithmic systems to display, rank or recommend content, whether free or paid.

It applies to all platforms whose services are available within the UAE or are directed at users in the country.

Children between the ages of 15 and 16 are permitted to use social media platforms on the condition that enhanced protective measures are applied to their accounts, including age-appropriate content classification, disabling high-risk features such as interaction with unknown users, regulation of usage time and duration, and the provision of parental control tools.

Notably, parental consent will not exempt under-15s from the prohibition.

Platforms are required to implement accurate and reliable age verification mechanisms, with self-declaration of age not accepted as a valid method of verification.

Social media companies have been given up to 12 months to bring their operations in line with the ruling. Platforms found to be non-compliant risk being blocked within the UAE.

The UAE’s move follows the United Kingdom’s announcement last week of a social media ban for under-16s, and Australia’s legislation that took effect in December 2025 setting the minimum age at 16.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Turkey have also introduced similar restrictions in 2026 as governments globally move to regulate children’s access to social media.

… Students Sleep Inside Uncompleted Building

… We Are Waiting For Hostel Renovation From Lagos Govt—Spokesman

Nigeria’s premier higher education institution, Yaba College of Technology is suffering from acute student accommodation crisis as many students now resort to sleeping in uncompleted buildings, classrooms and lecturers’ offices in some cases.

Many lecturers and students believe the current management of the institution has not adequately prioritized student welfare, particularly regarding hostel accommodation.

The college has only six hostels for a student population of 20,000, but only three of the hostels were allocated to students for this semester – Akata, PGD, and Complex Hostels.

The three hostels allocated are two female and one male hostels.
Yet, the management advertised hostel accommodation on the school portal for the current semester, and about 9,000 students applied at a fee of ₦2,000 each, according to documents seen by THE WHISTLER.

However, only three hostels were made available for allocation, and only 1,455 students were offered accommodation.

Some lecturers unhappy with the situation told THE WHISTLER that the problem reflects the school management’s nonchalant attitude toward students’ welfare.

    Management’s Mishandling Of BPP Query

An unprofessional response to a STOP ORDER issued by the Bureau of Public Procurement on the renovation of one of the institution’s six hostels since 2023 contributed to the accommodation crisis of the institution.

The New Hall Female Hostel, renamed Mrs Felicia Abimbola Odugbesan Hostel, has remained closed since 2023 due to non-compliance with due process requirements by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

The BPP said the award of the contract for the renovation of the hostel did not follow due process.
But in a bid to justify the contract, the management of the institution submitted wrong documents and could not provide the relevant documents requested by the BPP.

The management later admitted that it goofed, and submitted new documents to show that the contract followed due process.

In one of the correspondences from the institution to the BPP dated April 19, 2024 and signed by the Rector, Ibraheem Abdul, the school said its initial response to the stop order was “hurriedly packaged” which was the reason for the errors.

“I wish to state not just as defence. But also, as a matter of truth that the initial response was hurriedly packaged in order to reach out to you within the stated deadline, to avoid committing an offence of wilful refusal to provide documents.

“The errors contained in those documents hurriedly packaged are highly regretted.”

Obviously, the BPP was neither impressed by the apology nor the fresh documents submitted to it, a situation that has made the hostel unavailable to students two years after.

The management’s negligent attitude to students’ welfare also reflected in how hostel accommodation for students was handled in the current semester.

While hostel application forms were on sale, the Hollywood Hostel (for males) was scheduled for renovation. But to date, no renovation work has commenced on the hostel, making another hostel unavailable to students.

This situation has forced desperate students to sleep inside the school chapel and an uncompleted building used by Muslim students for prayers while others find sleeping places in classrooms and offices.

“This place has no toilet, if we’re pressed, we have to look for toilets in classroom buildings and lecturers’ offices,” said one of the occupants of the uncompleted building– a first-year computer student.

Asked why he chose to reside in such a place, he said he couldn’t get hostel allocation.

“It’s the same thing for most of us here. Instead of coming from home which may be far away, they chose to reside here to save money because here is free.”

Some security men who spoke to THE WHISTLER said some students defecate in nearby bushes within the school premises.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, denied any accommodation crisis for students.

“We have hostels and we accommodate those we can accommodate; I’m not aware of students sleeping in any uncompleted building,” he said.

He also denied that the BPP put a stop order on any of the school hostel.

“To the best of my knowledge, the BPP did not put any stop order on any hostel. I’m not aware of anything like that.

“We have one of our hostels destroyed by fire and we’re waiting for the Lagos State government to help with the renovation.”

Sanwo-Olu orders immediate cleanup as refuse piles up in Lagos

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following growing concerns over the accumulation of refuse in several areas.

The Lagos State Government, in a statement issued on Thursday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, acknowledged the concerns of residents and assured Lagosians that efforts were underway to address the situation.

The government said the issue had received the highest level of attention from Governor Sanwo-Olu and relevant authorities, stressing that residents deserve a clean, healthy and environmentally sustainable environment.

According to the statement, the governor directed all relevant agencies and service providers to intensify waste evacuation activities and work round the clock to clear the backlog of refuse and restore normal sanitation across affected communities.

The statement noted that additional resources had been deployed to support ongoing operations, while strategic measures were being introduced to improve efficiency in waste collection and disposal.

It added that the governor specifically instructed the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA,the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, and other agencies within the environmental sector to strengthen their efforts.

The government explained that Lagos, as a rapidly expanding megacity, generates about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, one of the highest figures on the African continent.

While acknowledging that operational challenges may occasionally arise within such a large and complex system, the state government maintained that it possesses the capacity and determination to tackle the situation effectively.

The statement assured residents that the challenge was temporary, noting that significant progress had already been recorded in several locations across the state.

“We wish to reassure residents that this challenge is temporary. Indeed, substantial progress is already being recorded in several locations, and more improvements will become visible across the state in the days ahead,” the statement said.

The government further stated that the Sanwo-Olu administration had continued to invest heavily in environmental sustainability, waste management infrastructure and urban renewal projects aimed at building a cleaner and safer Lagos.

It appealed to residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities, insisting that the current situation would not be allowed to persist.

“This is not a situation that will be allowed to linger. The Government is firmly on top of it and is pursuing a comprehensive response designed not only to clear the current accumulation but also to reinforce the long-term resilience of the state’s waste management architecture,” the statement added.

The state government also urged residents, community leaders, market associations and business owners to support sanitation efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding practices that obstruct drainage systems, roads and designated waste collection points.

Reaffirming its commitment to environmental protection and public health, the government assured residents that it would continue to take necessary steps to maintain clean and safe communities across Lagos.

“A cleaner Lagos is not merely an aspiration; it is a commitment we will continue to deliver,” the statement noted.

Environmental hazards: Nigeria must envision future without plastics – UNDP GEF

The United Nations Development Programme’ Global Environmental Facility Small Grant Programme has emphasized the need for Nigeria to begin envisioning a future devoid of plastics.

The National Coordinator of the UNDP GEF, Ibironke Olubamise urged Nigerian youths to pursue innovative solutions that could enable the country to eliminate its reliance on plastics.

Olubamise also called upon the government, organizations, and individuals to initiate efforts aimed at phasing out plastic usage.

She acknowledged that plastics continue to be prevalent globally, noting that it is essential to explore methods for managing and repurposing them to prevent waste that poses risks to human health.

During a plastic waste solution programme held in Abuja on Wednesday, Olubamise encouraged young individuals to consider upstream solutions to the issue of plastic waste.

Olubamise said, “You may also want to contemplate downstream solutions, which pertain to what we do after plastic has been produced. This is equally important, as many companies are still engaged in plastic production.

“On a global scale, plastic remains integral to nearly every facet of our lives. Therefore, I urge you to continue your efforts and strive to discover viable solutions.

“You never know what opportunities may arise, so I would like to express my gratitude to the organizers and to all of you who are participating, especially those who are actively involved.”
