Insecurity: Oyo Assembly cancels 3rd anniversary celebrations

The Oyo State House of Assembly has cancelled plans to hold elaborate activities for its third anniversary due to growing security concerns in the state.

The Assembly announced this on Thursday during plenary, citing the worsening security situation in the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso areas as the major reason for cancelling the celebration.

The lawmakers, rather than proceed with festivities, chose to shift focus to governance and ongoing efforts to address security challenges affecting residents.

DAILY POST reports that the 10th Oyo Assembly was inaugurated on June 14, 2023 and the anniversary would have marked three years of legislative activities.

Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, said the decision was taken after careful consideration of recent events in the state, stressing that the Assembly felt it was important to stand with communities currently facing security threats.

Ogundoyin stated that the period was not suitable for celebrations, especially as many residents in affected areas continue to grapple with safety concerns, adding that the Assembly remains committed to its legislative responsibilities despite the security challenges facing the state.

“Thirty-six bills have been passed into law, covering various sectors of governance and development.

“We passed 276 resolutions, which were transmitted to the executive arm and other relevant government institutions for implementation.

“The resolutions are being monitored through the oversight activities of various committees to ensure compliance and effectiveness,” he said.

According to the Speaker, the House has continued to strengthen governance through oversight and accountability measures.

He disclosed that the Post Legislative Scrutiny Unit carried out reviews into the implementation of key laws in the state, including the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law of 2019 and the Oyo State Security Agency Law of 2020.

The Speaker further said that these reviews were necessary to assess how effectively the laws have been implemented and whether they are achieving their intended objectives.

Ogundoyin also highlighted the Assembly’s intervention in tackling insecurity through dialogue and stakeholder engagement.

He pointed to the security summit organised by the legislature as one of its major responses to the persistent security concerns across parts of the state.

    My wife not Benue First-Lady – Sam-Ode

The Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barr Sam Ode, has publicly addressed ongoing discussions surrounding the Office of the First Lady, clarifying that his wife, Mrs. Christie Ada Sam-Ode, is not the First Lady of the State.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Ior Ikyereve.

According to the statement, Mrs. Christie Ada Sam-Ode’s position remains that of the wife of the Deputy Governor by virtue of her husband’s constitutional office.

The statement described as misleading various narratives circulating on social media that allegedly suggested Mrs. Sam-Ode was laying claim to the Office of the First Lady.

It stressed that the position of First Lady is traditionally occupied by the wife of the governor and maintained that there has been no attempt by Mrs. Sam-Ode to assume or claim that role.

The Deputy Governor’s Office further stated that Mrs. Ode remains committed to supporting her husband in carrying out his responsibilities while contributing to initiatives that align with the administration’s development objectives.

The statement also dismissed suggestions of internal disagreements within government circles, emphasizing that the deputy governor and his family maintain a cordial working relationship with Governor Hyacinth Alia and other stakeholders in the administration.

The office urged members of the public to disregard narratives capable of creating distractions or misunderstandings, expressing hope that the clarification would put an end to the controversy circulating online.

  • Jubilation in Tungan Madaki as access road reconnects farmers, students to livelihoods

Jubilation in Tungan Madaki as access road reconnects farmers, students to livelihoods

Residents of Tungan Madaki, a rural community in The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday expressed excitement over the construction of an access road to connect them with other parts of FCT.

The residents and other neighbouring communities said they were excited because it was the first time they would experience the presence of government in their community.

They said that the newly constructed seven-kilometre access road from Airport Road (Bill Clinton Drive) to the community by President Bola Tinubu administration has reconnected farmers and students in the communities to livelihoods.

The District Head of the community, Malam Muhammad Haruna, said on the sideline of the official inauguration of the road, that the development would change their lives for good.

Haruna commended Tinubu and the FCT Minister Nyesom, Mr Wike for bringing governance to their door steps and for taking steps to improve their livelihoods.

He said that for decades, daily life in the community was characterised by isolation, economic stagnation, and inaccessibility to schools.

“We are happy that this narrative has completely changed. The completion of this critical road, linking Bill Clinton Drive directly to the heart of my community has brought widespread relief and celebration among my people.

“This is a turning point in the history of our community after years of administrative neglect by successive governments.

“Prior to this intervention, the community’s agrarian economy was severely bottlenecked by a dilapidated road network and absence of a memorable bridge that cut us from the rest of FCT, especially during the rainy season.

“We have suffered for decades. It has not been easy for us to transport our produce from the farms to the community, let alone to external markets, but today we are joyful that our story has changed,” he said.

The traditional ruler said that with the new infrastructure seamlessly connecting local farms to consumer hubs, transport costs have reduced and farm-to-market logistics also reduced.

He added that post-harvest losses would equally drop, a development that would significantly increase farmers’ earning and in the long run, improve their livelihoods.

He added that beyond the economic impact, the new road would also resolve the severe seasonal education crisis being experienced in the community.

He explained that Tungan Madaki hosts a major senior secondary school meant to serve a wide cluster of neighboring communities.

He however, said that during the rainy season, the collapsed bridge and washed-out terrain made trekking too dangerous, barring students from neighbouring communities from accessing the school.

“The completion of this road project has permanently restored safe and daily access to the school, eliminating seasonal drop-out rates caused by hazardous infrastructure.

However, while celebrating the milestone, the community leadership noted that full empowerment requires addressing a few remaining structural challenges.

To complement their newfound mobility, Haruna appealed to Wike to provide potable drinking water to the communities, which remains a critical missing link for the residents’ health and wellness.

“Also, farming is our only means to feed ourselves, send our children to school, and afford basic living expenses. Therefore, safeguarding local farmlands is the final step to ensuring that the people of Tungan Madaki can fully reap the dividends of democracy,” he said.

The FCT Minister had explained that the project was executed inline with Tinubu’s commitment to connecting rural communities with road infrastructure.

He explained that the access road, which includes a four-span bridge, would connect nine communities and terminate at Zuba Road.

  • LP Chieftain Demands Protest Against Obi Over Okonkwo’s “Persecution”

LP Chieftain Demands Protest Against Obi Over Okonkwo’s “Persecution”

A former Chairman of the Labour Party in Enugu State, Barr Casmir Agbo, has called on the people of Enugu North Senatorial District to protest against the legal suit filed against actor-turned lawyer, Mr Kenneth Okonkwo, by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Party, Mr Peter Obi.

The call is sequel to the planned visit of Obi to Nsukka to lead the campaign of NDC’s senatorial candidate, Bishop Oscar Ossai, ahead of the by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026. THE WHISTLER reports that Okonkwo hails from Nsukka.

Agbo in a trending post condemned Obi’s legal suit against Okonkwo, describing it as “prosecuting the same man who toiled for him during the 2023 election”. In his words, “If it were to be in the North or West, our demand today would be to let him know that he is prosecuting our son, Barr Kenneth Okonkwo, who toiled for him. I expect a big protest to demand the withdrawal of the suit against him today. We must act as a people that were born and met the first indigenous University in Nigeria at Nsukka. Obi’s Agulu town is not bigger or more developed than Nsukka.”

He reminded Obi that Nsukka, through UNN, trained him, adding that, “We must not be naive in everything. Kenneth popularly known as Andy Okeke has paid his dues.”

Agbo, who was the state LP chairman during the 2023 general election, also alleged that Obi worked against LP’s guber candidate, Barr Chijioke Edeoga, in favour of Gov Peter Mbah, who then was in the Peoples Democratic Party.
In his words, “What happened in Enugu State during 2023 general elections are very fresh in our minds. We are blaming some of our people and shouting that they worked against Edeoga during that election, but our greatest enemy in that election was Mr Peter Obi. From the very day Obi came into the party, he wanted another person and when the party endorsed Edeoga, he pitched his tent with PDP in the state.”

Agbo claimed that Peter Obi made everything possible to deny LP victory during the election.

According to him, “Let me put it in a way that many will understand it very well. Peter Obi never campaigned for LP in Enugu State; even to the extent that he stopped me from reading my address at a point by sending Clement Ojukwu to tell me to stop at a certain point at Okpara Square when I was reading about the failure of PDP in the state. Secondly, he avoided us like a plague whenever we met at a meeting in Enugu.”
