LASEMA rescues 27, recovers nine bodies from collapsed Lagos building

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has concluded search, rescue and recovery operations at the site of the collapsed two-storey building near Alakija Bus Stop in Satellite Town, rescuing 27 persons alive while recovering nine bodies from the debris.

The building reportedly collapsed around 12:47 p.m. on Thursday in the Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos.

In a statement issued on Friday by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, LASEMA said emergency response teams were immediately mobilised to the scene following distress alerts.

According to the agency, its Sharks Response Team from the Lekki Base and the Alpha Cobra Squad from Onipanu arrived at the location within 40 minutes alongside other emergency responders.

Agencies involved in the operation included the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, LNSC, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Red Cross and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, CCECC.

LASEMA disclosed that all 27 rescued victims received immediate medical attention from LASAMBUS officials before being transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

The agency stated that the fatalities included four adults confirmed dead before rescuers arrived at the scene, while five additional victims, among them a two-year-old girl, were later recovered during the operation.

According to the statement, the remains of the deceased were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for identification and release to their relatives.

LASEMA added that its heavy-duty excavator worked alongside two excavators deployed by CCECC, enabling rescue workers to gain access to trapped victims and complete the operation safely.

The agency confirmed that rescue efforts ended around 4:00 a.m. on Friday after emergency responders successfully reached ground zero.

It further disclosed that the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, supervised the operation throughout the exercise.

LASEMA said Babajide Sanwo-Olu had directed LASBCA to immediately conduct integrity tests on adjoining buildings and ensure strict compliance with building regulations within the area.

The agency expressed sympathy with the families of the deceased and wished those injured speedy recovery.

It also urged residents to promptly report distressed structures to LASBCA or through LASEMA’s emergency toll-free lines, 112 and 767, to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

He married my best friend – Akin Olaiya’s wife reveals cause of marital crisis [VIDEO]

Nafisat, wife of a Nigeria actor, Akin Olaiya, has revealed why she moved out of their matrimonial home.

DAILY POST reports that Olaiya got married to Nafisat in July 2025, years after the crash of his first marriage.

Rumours of the couple’s separation surfaced online in less than five months after the ceremony.

Finally confirming the separation in a dissolution statement released on June 22 2026, the actor claimed that Nafisat moved out of their matrimonial home without any crisis and all efforts to bring her back proved abortive.

Reacting to the controversial statement in a video on social media, Nafisat who had earlier accused Olaiya of abusing her, however, revealed that she left the marriage following the actor’s love affair with her best friend who was her chief bridesmaid during their wedding.

“Can you imagine that after the mistreating, pain and everything, the said husband ends up marrying your own best friend.

“So, what does that mean ? It’s because I’m not just the type that will come to say my own side of the story. I’m not used to it because in my own culture they don’t train us like that”, she said.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed this in an update on the incident on Thursday.

It was  gathered that the building, which housed shops and business premises, collapsed earlier in the day, prompting the activation of the state’s emergency response system.

In an initial statement, Oke-Osanyintolu said a multi-agency rescue operation had been launched immediately after the incident was reported.

“LASEMA has activated its emergency response following the collapse of a three-storey shopping complex at Alakija, Ori-Ade LCDA.

“A multi-agency rescue operation is ongoing, with responders working systematically to search for and extricate anyone trapped beneath the rubble,” he stated.

According to him, emergency responders, including officials of LASEMA, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, and other stakeholders, began coordinated rescue efforts shortly after arriving at the scene.

He said two victims were initially rescued alive through the joint efforts of responders, while one deceased adult male was recovered from the debris.

“Two victims have been rescued alive through the joint efforts of LASEMA, LASBCA, and CRCC Construction Company.

“One deceased adult male has been located. Recovery efforts are ongoing,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

Oke-Osanyintolu noted that there were reports that additional persons, including shop owners who had resumed business activities, might still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

He added that heavy-duty equipment, including an excavator, was deployed to support rescue efforts and speed up access to affected sections of the rubble.

The agency subsequently confirmed that the casualty figure had risen as rescue operations progressed.

Providing a fresh update at about 4:20pm, the LASEMA boss stated that eight fatalities had been recorded, while 26 victims were rescued alive.

“As of 4:20 p.m., a total of 26 persons have been rescued alive, while eight fatalities have been recorded, including a baby girl.

“Search and rescue operations remain ongoing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” he said.

The agency urged members of the public to remain calm and stay away from the scene to allow emergency personnel unrestricted access to carry out life-saving operations.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in an earlier statement on Thursday, confirmed that two people were recovered dead while 16 others were rescued alive.

The Controller General of the agency, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that emergency responders were working to ensure that all affected persons were rescued.

She stated, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service hereby provides an update on the ongoing rescue operation at the site of the collapsed two-storey building located at Alakija, Old Ojo Road, along the Badagry Expressway.

“Rescue efforts are still ongoing, and six additional victims have been successfully rescued from the debris, bringing the number to 16. Regrettably, two people have been recovered dead.
