Two Arrested While Attempting To Drive Stolen Across Border

Operatives attached to Idiroko Division of the Ogun State Police Command, led by CSP Adejuwon Ariyo, the Divisional Police Officer, have foiled a cross-border vehicle trafficking attempt and arrested two suspects, Seun Lawal ‘M’, aged 46 years, and Ademola Oriyomi ‘M’, aged 38 years, over a conspiracy involving a company driver and his guarantor to smuggle a 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus, earlier declared stolen from Lagos, into the Benin Republic for illegal disposal.

The operation was based on credible intelligence received at about 11:00 p.m. on June 12, 2026, indicating that the suspects had positioned the said vehicle at Babaloke area of Idiroko and were preparing to move it across the international border under false pretence.

Acting swiftly on the information, CSP Adejuwon Ariyo mobilised and led a surveillance team to the location, where operatives intercepted the suspects in the course of executing the cross-border movement. In a decisive tactical response, the operatives demobilised the vehicle by shooting one of its tyres, effectively immobilising it and preventing its escape across the border.

The prompt intervention led to the arrest of the two suspects and the recovery of the stolen 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Seun Lawal, a driver, conspired with Ademola Oriyomi, his guarantor, to steal and sell the vehicle in the Benin Republic. The suspects admitted that the proceeds were intended to facilitate their relocation after the illegal transaction.

The suspects are currently in custody while investigation continues to uncover possible links to broader cross-border vehicle theft syndicates.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, commends the professionalism, vigilance, and tactical precision of CSP Adejuwon Ariyo and the operatives of Idiroko Division, whose intelligence-led response ensured the interception, demobilisation, and recovery of the stolen vehicle.

Morocco Hold Brazil To Draw In World Cup Opener

Morocco and Brazil shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in their opening Group C match of the FIFA World Cup before a sell-out crowd of 80,663 spectators.

The Atlas Lions, who reached the semi-finals of the last World Cup, made a bright start and were rewarded in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari produced a composed finish, delicately chipping the ball over Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker to give Morocco the lead.

Morocco’s early dominance unsettled Brazil, who struggled to find their rhythm during the opening stages of the encounter.

However, the five-time world champions responded strongly and restored parity in the 32nd minute. Vinicius Junior received a pass from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the penalty area, cut inside onto his stronger right foot, and unleashed a superb strike into the roof of the net beyond the reach of the Moroccan goalkeeper.

The equaliser lifted Brazil, who enjoyed more possession and looked the more threatening side for periods of the match, but they were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Moroccan defence.

Both coaches introduced several substitutions in the second half in an attempt to gain the upper hand, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce as the contest became increasingly tactical.

With neither side able to produce a decisive moment, the match ended in a stalemate, earning both teams a valuable point to begin their World Cup campaign.

The result leaves Group C finely balanced as Morocco and Brazil look ahead to their remaining fixtures with hopes of securing a place in the knockout stage.

The Swiss looked to be heading to victory, but Boualem Khoukhi struck in the fifth minute of injury time to earn a famous draw.

Switzerland are punished for allowing the game to drift. Their tempo and intensity noticeably dropped in the second half and they seemed happy to try to see out a 1-0.

Qatar lost all three group games in their home tournament four years ago.

This draw leaves all four teams in Group B which also includes Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina tightly packed.

NATO realizes Russia can’t be defeated through Ukraine – Putin

President Vladimir Putin has taunted the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, declaring that the alliance has failed to defeat Russia through Ukraine.

Putin spoke at the Kremlin during a meeting with military personnel participating in the special military operation as part of the Russia Day commemoration.

The premier said his country stands alone against the “so-called collective West represented by NATO,” with several countries supporting actions directed against Russia.

”It was them (NATO) who started the war,” he emphasized. “I have said this many times, we did not initiate the conflict when the special military operation began (in 2022).”

Putin insists NATO’s “coup d’etat in Ukraine” and deployment of artillery and rocket systems compelled Russia to protect the people of Crimea (in 2014), leading to the war in eastern Ukraine.

“We did not wake up one day and decided that we would start a war tomorrow,” he said. “For eight years, we attempted to achieve a peaceful settlement.”

Putin recalled Moscow urging the Ukrainian authorities to talk with southeastern Ukraine, where Russians live, and were repeatedly assured that agreements would be implemented.

The President said despite the Minsk Agreements, Russia’s foes openly admitted in recent months that the pact was intended to provide time for Kyiv to rearm and launch warfare.

Noting that they made a mistake by revealing their objective publicly, Putin accused some countries of joining NATO “in the hope of securing their share of the benefits.”

On the negotiation moves by Ukraine and some European capitals, Putin expressed Moscow’s receptive disposition but stressed that discussions must factor in Russia’s “long-term” interests.

”There is only one piece of advice we can offer our adversaries: do not fight Russia. Never attempt to do so,” he warned. “Those (talks) must be genuine negotiations, not ultimatums.”

Stupid public policy reason Nigeria without electricity – Kemi Badenoch

Kemi Badenoch, leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, has said Nigeria has failed to translate its vast oil resources into adequate electricity supply.

Badenoch disclosed this in a recent interview with The Spectator, where she spoke extensively about her childhood and other issues.

She argued that poor public policy is responsible for Nigeria’s decades-long electricity supply challenges.

“My belief that we need to drill our oil and gas comes from growing up in a country… Nigeria is an oil-producing country that has never had electricity,” she said.

“It is very easy to have resources under the ground, but stupid public policy means that you can’t use them,” she added.

Her comment comes as Nigeria continues to battle inadequate power supply years after the privatisation of the power sector.

Nigeria’s electricity generation has hovered between 3,500 megawatts and 5,000 megawatts for a population estimated at over 250 million people.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his Democracy Day speech, said he would ensure that Nigeria’s power sector challenges are addressed.

Tinubu Directs Wike To Allocate Land For Abdulsalami Centre

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to allocate a suitable parcel of land in Abuja for the development of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Africa Resource Centre (AAARC).

Tinubu gave the directive on Saturday during the public presentation of three books, Call of Duty, Nigeria’s Grand Patriot, and Mediating for Peace in Africa, held in honour of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), who marked his 84th birthday anniversary.

Tinubu, who was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, said the centre aligns with the values promoted by Abdulsalami throughout his public service.

Vice President Kashim Shettima represents President Bola Tinubu at Abdulsalami Abubakar ‘s birthday and book launch at the State House, Abuja.

“The establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Africa Resource Centre is a worthy initiative that aligns with the values General Abubakar has championed throughout his life.

“In recognition of its importance, I hereby direct the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to allocate a suitable parcel of land within the Federal Capital Territory for the development of the Centre and the advancement of its mission,” he said.

Tinubu praised the former Head of State for his role in Nigeria’s return to democracy, describing him as a leader who promoted peace, national unity and democratic stability.

He said Abdulsalami’s decision to hand over power to an elected civilian government in 1999 created the foundation for the country’s longest uninterrupted democratic period.

The president said Abdulsalami’s transition programme that returned the country from military rule to civilian democracy influenced his return to participate in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Abdulsalami took power after the death of military dictator, Sani Abacha, and promised to hand over power to an elected civilian government.

The programme led to the establishment of a timetable for elections, the creation of political parties, the drafting of a new constitution, and the eventual transfer of power on May 29, 1999.

“Like many pro-democracy activists of that era, I returned to participate in the democratic process because I was convinced of General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s sincerity and determination to restore constitutional rule.

“He kept his word and, as a result, helped steady the ship of state, preserved national cohesion, and guided our country safely towards democracy. For that service, generations of Nigerians will remain in his debt. Yet his contribution did not end with his departure from office,” Tinubu said.

He described Abdulsalami’s life as one defined by duty, moderation, courage and commitment to public service.

“At a moment of profound uncertainty, when Nigeria stood at a crossroads, providence entrusted him with the responsibility of leadership. He understood both the weight of that responsibility and the demands of the moment. He pledged to return the country to democratic rule, and he fulfilled that pledge faithfully and honourably,” the President said.

The event was attended by former leaders including former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), former South African President Thabo Mbeki, and Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio.

In his remarks, Abdulsalami thanked Tinubu and Shettima for supporting the commemorative event.

He recalled that he assumed leadership in 1998 when Nigeria faced uncertainty and supervised the transition to civilian rule within 11 months.

He urged Nigerians and other stakeholders to continue promoting peace, justice and national unity.

Nigeria produces oil but never had electricity — Kemi Badenoch

Leader of the United Kingdom Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has again lashed out at Nigeria’s governance record, describing the country’s long-standing electricity challenges as a consequence of poor public policy.

Badenoch, speaking on how her upbringing shaped her political beliefs, stated Nigeria’s vast natural resources had not translated into prosperity for its citizens.

“Nigeria is an oil-producing country that has never had electricity. It is very easy to have resources under the ground, but stupid public policy means that you can’t use them,” she said.

She also drew parallels between policies she opposes in the United Kingdom and the approach of past Nigerian military governments.

According to her, excessive government control and wealth redistribution policies often lead to economic decline.

Reflecting on her childhood in Nigeria, Badenoch said her experiences in a developing country continue to influence her views on governance and economic management.
