United States President Donald Trump has warned newly appointed United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham that he must urgently confront the country’s illegal migration crisis, saying the issue was “killing” Britain.

Trump made the remarks during an interview with GB News on Wednesday when asked whether Burnham had been too quiet on immigration during his first weeks in office.

“He’s going to have to mention it because it’s killing your country,” Trump said. “I know Starmer did very little about it, and they’re coming from all over the world.

They’re coming from Africa. They’re coming from South America. They’re coming from different parts of Asia. They’re invading Europe. It’s an invasion, and the UK is a prime suspect,” he said.

Trump’s comments came just hours after more than 500 illegal migrants crossed the English Channel in a single day.

Burnham has so far largely steered clear of directly addressing the migrant crisis since taking office on 20 July.

Downing Street was pressed on the issue earlier this week when his spokesman was asked whether the prime minister wanted asylum hotels closed.

“The work on that continues,” the spokesman said, adding there was no change in the work being carried out by the Home Secretary.

Home Office figures published during Burnham’s first week in office showed 172 people crossed the Channel on his first Wednesday in office, followed by 366 on Thursday across just three boats, and a further 103 on Friday.

During their first phone call after Burnham took office, Trump pledged United States support for the new prime minister and the two discussed the US-UK alliance, trade, Middle East security, and efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump described the call as having gone “very well.”

Nigerian influencer, and human rights activist, Oruche Ogeamara Precious, popularly known as Mama Pee, has warned South African singer, Tyla against her upcoming concert in the country.

She gave the warning on Thursday following Tyla’s failure to condemn xenophobic attacks and killing of Nigerians in South Africa.

The videos of attacks on other Africans and the killing of some Nigerians by South African citizens intensified tension.

However, reacting to the announcement of Tyla’s APOP World Tour, which included a Lagos performance on December 22, Mama Pee argued that the songstress cannot hold a concert in Nigeria while Nigerians continue to face deadly attacks in South Africa.

While questioning Tyla’s silence over the attack, Mama Pee told her to stay back in her country which she tagged “human hunting country.”

Tagging Tyla to the Instagram post, Mama Pee wrote, “So tyla will come to Nigeria pass our immigration peacefully? and we will buy tickets to go and see her??? As per?

“A young man has just been strangled by the police if her country several killed cos of nothing but hate and she hasn’t said a word but she and her fellow human-hunting crew can come and sing for us so we dance here while our people bleed and scream in fear over there?

“Fellow Nigerians our feelings are valid. No gaslighting over here, Tyla should stay back in her human hunting country. Her silence in the face of grave injustice is loud enough.

“If na only this one we fit do as our government no no themselves, make we do am. I stand with Nigerians. Stay back in your country.”

A former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has revealed how the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, persuaded him to abandon plans to leave Nigeria permanently after becoming disillusioned with the country’s political landscape.

Chidoka made the revelation while speaking at the presentation of Paul Nwabuikwu’s book, recounting for the first time a private conversation he had with Okonjo-Iweala in Washington, D.C., in 2020.

According to him, the former Minister of Finance had long served as a mentor, supporting him during his tenure as Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and later as Minister of Aviation.

He said the aftermath of the 2019 general elections, in which he played key roles in reconciling former President Olusegun Obasanjo with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, managing the Atiku/Obi campaign Situation Room, and serving as the PDP’s principal witness at the Presidential Election Tribunal, left him emotionally drained.

Chidoka explained that after travelling to the United States, where his wife had begun a PhD programme, he contemplated accepting an international appointment or returning to ExxonMobil after losing faith in Nigeria’s political system following a governorship election judgment in early 2020.

“I went to see Aunty Ngoo in her office at Gavi on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., and told her I was ready to accept an international role or return to ExxonMobil,” he recalled.

According to Chidoka, Okonjo-Iweala listened before offering advice that changed the course of his life.

“Osita, Nigeria needs people like you. Do not allow life’s inevitable setbacks to define your choices. Go back to Nigeria. Stay in the trenches. Don’t give up.”

He said although it was not the advice he wanted to hear, it was exactly what he needed at the time.

Chidoka said he returned to Abuja after reflecting on the conversation and has since gone on to establish the Athena Centre, Mekaria Institute and ClearPath Media, while also earning a law degree and continuing his public service engagements.

“One conversation changed the trajectory of my life,” he said, expressing gratitude to Okonjo-Iweala for encouraging him to remain in Nigeria.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has received a delegation from the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and Mota-Engil Nigeria ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kano Light Rail Project recently approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The meeting, held at the Kano State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, focused on preparations for the commencement of the project, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

The delegation was led by the Managing Director of MOFI, Dr Armstrong Ume Takang, and the Chairman of Mota-Engil Nigeria, Kola Karim.

The statement noted that the Kano Light Rail Project, valued at ₦1.05 trillion, is expected to improve urban transportation, enhance connectivity, ease traffic congestion and boost economic activities across the state.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and the contractors to ensure the successful execution of the project.

He described the rail initiative as a strategic investment that would reinforce Kano’s status as the commercial hub of Northern Nigeria while providing residents with a modern, safe and efficient mass transit system.

The governor also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the project and thanked the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar Kabir Bichi, for his legislative support toward its implementation.
