World Cup 2026: Ghana releases statement after Thomas Partey denied entry to Canada

Ghana have released a statement after Canada’s ‘unfair decision’ to deny midfielder, Thomas Partey entry into their country to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Partey was recently denied entry into Canada because he was charged with sexual assault.

But the former Arsenal star is awaiting trial and has not been convicted.

Partey will not play the Black Stars’ first group-stage game in Toronto against Panama on Thursday after being denied a Canadian visa.

Reacting, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement, “The Government of the Republic of Ghana expresses strong reservations following the high-handed and extremely unfair decision by Canada to refuse a temporary residence application for Mr. Thomas Teye Partey, a Ghanaian national and key member of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, which is participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“Accordingly, Ghana is pursuing active diplomatic engagements with the relevant Canadian authorities on this matter.”

World Cup: They’ve an array of talent – Benitez names 4 favourites to win trophy

Former Real Madrid manager, Rafa Benitez, has named France, Spain and Germany as the four favourites to win the 2026 World Cup this summer.

Benitez insisted that France, Spain and England have an array of talent that includes the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice.

According to him, Germany is another favourite because of its history in the competition.

Speaking about the favourites for the World Cup, the former Liverpool coach told La Gazzetta, “France possesses an impressive array of talent; they have even had to leave some players at home, which is astonishing: Dembele, Barcola, Doue, Thuram, Olise, and Mbappe.

“Then there is Spain, for similar reasons, because they have Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, alongside a fabulous midfield with Pedri and Rodri.

“You can’t ignore Germany, because history counts, and certainly not England with Bellingham or Saka, Gordon or Rice.”

PRESIDENT TINUBU EXPRESSES SADNESS OVER THE DEATH OF RETIRED MAJOR-GENERAL ABUBAKAR, CONDOLES WITH THE FAMILY

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed shock over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State.

General Abubakar, after a distinguished career in the military, retired a few years ago. He was on his way to his hometown when the hoodlums captured him

The President commiserated with his family, especially his wife, who is still being held against her will by the captors.

He also extended his condolences to the Katsina State government and the armed forces.

While the terrorists have done their worst, the President wants them to know that the government will never bow to their demand to release their members held by our security agencies.

As I said on June 12: “Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians.

“As Nigerians,  we must stand united and be assured that the enemies of our nation shall soon be history. We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation.

“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, never to negotiate with them on any terms, but to continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our dear nation, who should never be spared.”

Gen Rabe Abubakar rtd Buried In Kaduna After Dying In Bandits Captivity

Tears flowed on Saturday evening as family members, friends, military officers, government officials and sympathisers bid a final farewell to retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, whose death in bandits’ captivity has reignited public outrage over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

The late senior military officer was laid to rest at about 6:00 p.m. at the Gidan Dawa Cemetery, located opposite his residence in Katsina metropolis, following funeral prayers attended by a large crowd of mourners.

Among those present were top government officials, security chiefs, senior military officers, traditional title holders, political associates, family members and well-wishers who gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased.

The burial came amid growing concerns over the persistent wave of banditry and kidnappings across northern Nigeria, with many Nigerians describing the tragedy as a stark reminder of the country’s security challenges.

For many mourners at the burial ground, the late general’s tragic end symbolises the painful reality facing thousands of Nigerians who remain vulnerable to criminal attacks despite ongoing efforts to restore peace and security across the country.

According to them, his death has intensified calls for urgent and decisive measures to tackle banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes that continue to threaten lives and livelihoods across northern Nigeria.

General Abubakar was on his way to his hometown when he was abducted alongside his wife along the Katsina–Matazu road on May 30, 2026.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Katsina State, Nasiru Mu’azu, said the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.

Reacting to the development, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) in a statement strongly rejected any suggestion that the retired general died a natural death, arguing that his demise was directly linked to the prevailing insecurity in the country.

“There is nothing natural about dying in the hands of bandits,” Charanchi said.

“A man abducted from his home or along the road and held captive by criminals did not die a natural death—he died because the state failed in its most sacred responsibility: protecting the lives and property of its citizens,” he stated.

Charanchi said the death of a retired Major General while in captivity raises serious questions about the safety of ordinary Nigerians.

“When even a retired major general can be kidnapped and perish in captivity, what hope remains for ordinary Nigerians? This tragedy is a damning indictment of the worsening insecurity ravaging our nation. No amount of official wording can whitewash this painful reality,” he stated.

According to the CNG leader, the incident underscores what he described as the collapse of security and the inability of authorities to adequately guarantee the safety of citizens.

However, Charanchi offered prayers for the repose of the late officer’s soul, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

He also prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and urged leaders at all levels to confront insecurity with sincerity, courage and determination.

“We pray that Allah blesses Nigeria with sincere, courageous and compassionate leaders who will confront insecurity with honesty, determination and unwavering commitment, so that no family will have to endure such a tragedy again,” he added.

The Anambra State Government has confirmed the arrest of a clergyman, Pastor Harrison Charles, founder of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, who has been accused of engaging in the alleged manipulation and taking of multiple married women from their husbands.

The pastor, who is currently under investigation, was arrested following allegations that he coerced some female members of his church into leaving their husbands, with claims that he also allegedly “swapped wives” among congregants.

The development comes amid a broader crackdown by the Anambra State Government on suspected fake pastors, which has already led to the arraignment of eight clerics in court, with several alleged victims now coming forward to share their experiences.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Ejimofor Opara, confirmed the arrest in a Facebook post, stating that the clergyman has been handed over to the police for further investigation.

According to him, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, urged members of the public with additional information on the pastor’s activities to come forward and assist ongoing investigations.

Two Arrested While Attempting To Drive Stolen Across Border

Operatives attached to Idiroko Division of the Ogun State Police Command, led by CSP Adejuwon Ariyo, the Divisional Police Officer, have foiled a cross-border vehicle trafficking attempt and arrested two suspects, Seun Lawal ‘M’, aged 46 years, and Ademola Oriyomi ‘M’, aged 38 years, over a conspiracy involving a company driver and his guarantor to smuggle a 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus, earlier declared stolen from Lagos, into the Benin Republic for illegal disposal.

The operation was based on credible intelligence received at about 11:00 p.m. on June 12, 2026, indicating that the suspects had positioned the said vehicle at Babaloke area of Idiroko and were preparing to move it across the international border under false pretence.

Acting swiftly on the information, CSP Adejuwon Ariyo mobilised and led a surveillance team to the location, where operatives intercepted the suspects in the course of executing the cross-border movement. In a decisive tactical response, the operatives demobilised the vehicle by shooting one of its tyres, effectively immobilising it and preventing its escape across the border.

The prompt intervention led to the arrest of the two suspects and the recovery of the stolen 28-seater Toyota Coaster bus at the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Seun Lawal, a driver, conspired with Ademola Oriyomi, his guarantor, to steal and sell the vehicle in the Benin Republic. The suspects admitted that the proceeds were intended to facilitate their relocation after the illegal transaction.

The suspects are currently in custody while investigation continues to uncover possible links to broader cross-border vehicle theft syndicates.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, commends the professionalism, vigilance, and tactical precision of CSP Adejuwon Ariyo and the operatives of Idiroko Division, whose intelligence-led response ensured the interception, demobilisation, and recovery of the stolen vehicle.

The CP reiterates the Command’s unwavering commitment to proactive policing, strengthened border security operations, and sustained efforts aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of action within Ogun State and its border corridors.

  • Morocco Hold Brazil To Draw In World Cup Opener

Morocco Hold Brazil To Draw In World Cup Opener

Morocco and Brazil shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in their opening Group C match of the FIFA World Cup before a sell-out crowd of 80,663 spectators.

The Atlas Lions, who reached the semi-finals of the last World Cup, made a bright start and were rewarded in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari produced a composed finish, delicately chipping the ball over Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker to give Morocco the lead.

Morocco’s early dominance unsettled Brazil, who struggled to find their rhythm during the opening stages of the encounter.

However, the five-time world champions responded strongly and restored parity in the 32nd minute. Vinicius Junior received a pass from Bruno Guimaraes on the left side of the penalty area, cut inside onto his stronger right foot, and unleashed a superb strike into the roof of the net beyond the reach of the Moroccan goalkeeper.

The equaliser lifted Brazil, who enjoyed more possession and looked the more threatening side for periods of the match, but they were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Moroccan defence.

Both coaches introduced several substitutions in the second half in an attempt to gain the upper hand, but clear-cut opportunities remained scarce as the contest became increasingly tactical.

With neither side able to produce a decisive moment, the match ended in a stalemate, earning both teams a valuable point to begin their World Cup campaign.

The result leaves Group C finely balanced as Morocco and Brazil look ahead to their remaining fixtures with hopes of securing a place in the knockout stage.

Qatar snatched a dramatic late draw with Switzerland in San Francisco to earn their first ever World Cup point.

Breel Embolo scored the opening goal from the penalty spot after Mahmoud Abunada brought Remo Freuler down in the box.

    Qatar Vs Switzerland

The Swiss looked to be heading to victory, but Boualem Khoukhi struck in the fifth minute of injury time to earn a famous draw.

Switzerland are punished for allowing the game to drift. Their tempo and intensity noticeably dropped in the second half and they seemed happy to try to see out a 1-0.

Qatar lost all three group games in their home tournament four years ago.

This draw leaves all four teams in Group B which also includes Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina tightly packed.
