2027: No reason for divided opposition — Henry Shield

A political analyst, Henry Shield, has said there is no justification for opposition parties to remain divided ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Shield stated this on Monday during a political programme in Abuja, where he urged opposition leaders to close ranks and present a united front capable of challenging the ruling party.

According to him, Nigerians are expecting a strong and coordinated opposition that can provide alternative leadership and address the country’s growing economic and security challenges.

“There is no reason to have a divided opposition in 2027. If the opposition parties truly want to rescue Nigeria, they must come together and speak with one voice,” he strongly said.

He warned that personal interests and internal rivalry among opposition politicians could weaken their chances in the next election cycle.

He also called on political stakeholders to place national interest above individual ambition, stressing that unity remains the strongest weapon against electoral defeat.

He maintained that coalition talks among opposition figures should be taken seriously to avoid repeating mistakes of previous elections.

  • African Leaders Push For Credit Reforms At Nairobi Summit

African Leaders Push For Credit Reforms At Nairobi Summit

African leaders pressed for sweeping reforms to improve access to affordable credit during the second day of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, as they seek to unlock major investments across the continent.

More than 30 African heads of state and government gathered in Kenya’s capital for the summit with French President Emmanuel Macron, the first time France has hosted such an event in an English-speaking African country.

Kenya’s Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi said the core issue was the high cost of borrowing caused by perceptions of elevated risk. “Africa has always been regarded as a high-risk area. And therefore access to credit, both for governments and for businesses, has always been pegged at higher interest rates,” Mudavadi told Reuters. “We need to address that. We need to have a situation where the financial markets globally start looking at Africa differently.”

Among the attending leaders were the presidents of Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Senegal and Zambia, along with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Macron expressed support for a first-loss guarantee mechanism to boost private investment into Africa. “We are going to go together to Evian in mid-June to convince the G7 to endorse that,” he said. He also invited Kenyan President William Ruto to attend next month’s G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France.

The leaders called for changes to the methodologies used by international credit rating agencies, which they accuse of overstating Africa’s risk. They also proposed that wealthy nations establish a debt refinancing mechanism for heavily indebted countries.

Major rating agencies, including S&P Global Ratings, Moody’s and Fitch, reject claims of regional bias, insisting their assessments are based on globally applied and publicly disclosed criteria.

The African Union is working to establish its own continental credit rating agency, which supporters say would offer a more accurate evaluation of African risk. In January, the African Export-Import Bank cut ties with Fitch over the agency’s risk assessment approach.

Broader discussions at the summit covered climate action, peace and security, digital transformation, and stronger African representation on the UN Security Council, including possible limits on veto powers.

France hopes the summit will help rebuild partnerships in Africa as its influence has waned in several former West African colonies, where governments have expelled French troops and reduced economic ties.

  • Nigeria-South Africa Chamber calls for calm over xenophobic unrest

Nigeria-South Africa Chamber calls for calm over xenophobic unrest

The Nigeria-South Africa Chamber of Commerce, NSACC, has called for calm, dialogue and strengthened bilateral cooperation amid recent xenophobic unrest in South Africa.

The Chairman of NSACC, Dr Ije Jidenma, made the call in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

The Federal Government has taken steps, including diplomatic engagements, investigations, legislative actions and voluntary evacuations to address the situation.

Jidenma expressed deep concern over the unrest in parts of South Africa, noting that the situation affected communities, businesses and livelihoods.

According to her, the chamber is particularly concerned about the impact on Nigerians and other African nationals living in South Africa, as well as the adverse effect on South African businesses and the broader investment climate.

She added that “as an organisation committed to fostering strong economic and cultural ties between Nigeria and South Africa, we emphasise that moments like this call for restraint and constructive engagements.

“Both nations share long-standing relationships built on mutual respect, cooperation, trade and a shared vision for African prosperity.

“These values must remain at the forefront during periods of tension such as this.”

Jidenma urged governments, community leaders, Civil Society Organisations, CSOs and citizens to prioritise peaceful dialogue and uphold the rule of law.

She said ensuring the safety and protection of all residents, irrespective of nationality, was essential to maintaining trust and stability.

The NSACC chairman also called for continued collaboration between Nigerian and South African authorities to address underlying issues, prevent escalation and strengthen mechanisms that support conflict resolution and social cohesion.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected. We remain committed to working alongside our partners to promote unity, economic resilience and renewed focus on the shared opportunities that bind our two nations,” she said.

  • UCL: Wesley Sneijder predicts scoreline of Arsenal vs PSG final

UCL: Wesley Sneijder predicts scoreline of Arsenal vs PSG final

Inter Milan legend, Wesley Sneijder, believes Arsenal could lose 4-0 against Paris Saint-Germain when both teams clash in the Champions League final in Budapest later this month.

Recall that Arsenal recently qualified for the Champions League final after beating Atletico Madrid, while Paris Saint-Germain knocked out Bayern Munich.

“I don’t believe the full-backs are the best players in the Champions League, and that is where PSG have power, especially on the left side,” Sneijder told Hard Rock Bet as quoted by Metro UK.

“If Arsenal manage it and win 1-0, then it is a great job.

“But I believe it will be very hard not to concede against PSG. So, it can either be 3-0 or 4-0 to PSG, or 1-0 Arsenal.”
