Zamfara Approves 100% Pension Increase For State, LG Retirees

The Zamfara State Government has approved an upward review of pensions for both state and local government retirees as part of efforts to improve the welfare of senior citizens amid rising living costs.

The approval was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa.

He noted that the decision followed recommendations from a special committee and the Office of the Accountant General, which carried out a comprehensive review of pensioners’ welfare, particularly those in the lower income categories.

It said the review became necessary due to current economic challenges that have made existing pension payments inadequate for many retirees.

The adjustment also aligns with a Federal Government circular on consequential adjustments following the implementation of the National Minimum Wage (Amended) Act 2024, which recommended a ₦32,000 monthly baseline increase for pensioners.

After reviewing available resources, the state government approved what it described as a 100 percent implementation option for both state and local government pensioners.

“Following detailed deliberations and assessment of available resources, the Zamfara State Government approved the 100 percent implementation option for both State and Local Government pensioners,” the statement read.

The government said the policy would benefit thousands of retirees across the state and help cushion the impact of inflation and rising living expenses.

It added that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal remains committed to improving the welfare of pensioners and workers.

“Governor Dauda Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of workers and pensioners,” the statement said.

The government further directed relevant agencies to ensure the smooth and timely implementation of the new pension structure.

It noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen social protection and improve living conditions for vulnerable citizens across the state.

  • Yobe Arms 1,886 Forest Guards Against Boko Haram

Yobe Arms 1,886 Forest Guards Against Boko Haram

The Yobe State Government says it has recruited, armed and deployed 1,886 trained forest guards to support military operations against Boko Haram insurgents across the state.

The Special Adviser on Security Matters to the state government, retired Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam, disclosed this during an interview with defence correspondents in Damaturu on Tuesday.

According to him, the forest guards were deployed to complement troops of Operation HADIN KAI, local hunters and other security agencies in tackling insurgent activities in remote communities and forest areas.

Abdulsalam said Yobe has remained one of the states most affected by insurgency since the extremist movement first emerged in Kanama in 2003 before escalating into a full-scale insurgency in 2009.

He explained that the security crisis intensified from 2011, forcing the state government at the time to support military operations through logistics, operational vehicles, troop allowances and feeding.

“From 2011 to 2015, the state government solely supported many aspects of the operation because the initial federal attention was largely concentrated on Borno State,” he said.

The security adviser identified Gulani, Gujba, Damaturu, Tarmuwa, Bursari, Yusufari and Geidam local government areas as the worst affected due to their proximity to Borno State and border routes linked to Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

He noted that insurgents often infiltrate Yobe from neighbouring areas in Borno to launch attacks before retreating.

According to him, Bulabulin Forest in Yusufari Local Government Area remains the only known major insurgent enclave within the state.

Abdulsalam praised the efforts of the military, the Department of State Services, local hunters and vigilante groups in disrupting insurgent movements and supply routes.

He said local hunters had become more effective through operational collaboration with security forces, enabling them to conduct covert operations against terrorist groups.

“They now carry out stealth operations disguised as traders or locals, strike Boko Haram elements and safely return. They have recorded tremendous successes,” he stated.

The adviser also commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, and the Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, for supporting community-based security initiatives.

According to him, Oluyede personally supported about 200 local hunters with logistics, allowances and operational equipment to strengthen security operations in vulnerable communities.

Abdulsalam stressed that the vast terrain of Yobe makes it difficult for conventional troops alone to effectively secure all affected areas, making the role of forest guards and local hunters essential.

He added that the newly recruited forest guards had already been placed on salary structures and deployed to strategic flashpoints across the state.

The adviser further disclosed that the state government continues to provide welfare support for families of fallen local hunters and security volunteers assisting the military.

Nigeria’s Telecom Network Under Threat– ATCON

Tony Emoekpere, President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), has called for stronger protection of communication infrastructure nationwide, urging Nigerians to treat telecom assets as critical to national development.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Emoekpere said operators in the telecommunications sector are not indifferent to the quality of service delivered to consumers, noting that industry stakeholders are already working closely with regulators, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to tackle persistent challenges affecting network performance.

Emoekpere stressed that many of these challenges are beyond the direct control of operators and require stronger public cooperation in protecting telecom infrastructure.

He added that infrastructure destruction remains one of the biggest threats to service quality and network stability in Nigeria.

According to him, telecom assets should be regarded as essential national infrastructure that must be safeguarded by all citizens.

He said, “We’re here complaining about poor service, but when we see people vandalising infrastructure, we don’t complain; when we see people cutting cables, we don’t report.”

He further urged Nigerians to be more proactive in reporting acts of vandalism to the appropriate authorities.

Emoekpere warned that continued damage to telecom facilities will only worsen the quality of service experienced by consumers across the country.

He called for stronger awareness campaigns to educate the public on the importance of protecting communication infrastructure.

He also emphasized that improving service delivery requires shared responsibility between operators, regulators, and citizens.

He appealed for collective action to safeguard telecom infrastructure, noting that its protection is key to improving connectivity and driving national development.

  • Tinubu, Danjuma To Attend Gowon’s Autobiography Launch In Abuja

Tinubu, Danjuma To Attend Gowon’s Autobiography Launch In Abuja

President Bola Tinubu and former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, are to attend the public presentation of the autobiography of former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, scheduled for May 19 in Abuja.

This is contained in a statement issued by Mr Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume.

Odunuga said Tinubu would be represented at the event by Akume.

He said the event, slated for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, is expected to attract top government officials, military veterans, diplomats and other dignitaries from across the country.

According to him, Tinubu is the Special Guest of Honour, while Danjuma, former Chief of Army Staff and ex-Minister of Defence, will unveil the autobiography.

Odunuga said the 881-page book, published by Havilah Group, chronicled Gowon’s life, leadership journey and reflections on key moments in Nigeria’s history, including the Nigerian Civil War between 1967 and 1970.

He added that the memoir also detailed Gowon’s early years and his emergence as Nigeria’s leader during a critical period in the nation’s history.

The statement quoted Gowon as saying that the autobiography was written to provide clarity on decisions taken during his administration rather than reopen painful memories of the past.

“By choosing to write, I took a conscious decision not to reopen old wounds but to clarify my thinking on policies and plans at a period often narrated by others.

“My story is one of conviction evaluated by circumstances at the crossroads of expectations and reality,” Gowon said.

Also quoted in the statement was the Group Chief Executive Officer of Havilah Group, Mr Lanre Adesuyi, who described the autobiography as a major contribution to Nigeria’s historical documentation and national discourse.

“We consider this project a significant milestone in our journey, one that reflects our commitment to preserving history, promoting thought leadership and contributing meaningfully to national discourse,” Adesuyi said.

Born in 1934, Gowon became Nigeria’s Head of State and Commander-in-Chief on Aug. 1, 1966, serving for nine years.

After leaving office, he obtained a PhD in Political Science from the University of Warwick in 1984 and later devoted himself to peacebuilding, national development and spiritual leadership.

His post-service initiatives include the “Nigeria Prays” movement and advocacy campaigns against diseases such as guinea worm, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria through the Yakubu Gowon Centre.

He also serves as the National Goodwill Ambassador for the control of viral hepatitis in Nigeria.

  • UNN slams critic, Alex Onyia for ’embarrassing’ school

UNN slams critic, Alex Onyia for ’embarrassing’ school

The University of Nigeria Nsukka, has condemned the recent criticisms made by an education advocate, Alex Onyia, over the state infrastructure at the institution.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr Agha Egwu Inya, alleged that Onyia arrived at the university with an ulterior motive and a television crew, ready to document the deteriorating infrastructure, particularly at Eni-Njoku hostel, contrary to his original and official engagement to the Institution.

Inya expressed the university’s embarrassment, claiming that Onyia’s actions portrayed the institution in a negative light before the public.

In the statement shared by Onyia himself, on his official page, seeking public opinion, the university official compared his conduct with that of Chukwuma Soludo, describing the governor as an example of what was termed “true alumni spirit.”

The statement further alleged that Onyia, who was invited to deliver the Herbert Macaulay Memorial Lecture organised by his faculty, shifted attention from mentorship and intellectual engagement to criticisms about hostel conditions within the institution.

According to the university official, the management under Vice Chancellor Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya had already commenced steps toward hostel renovation before the controversy emerged.

Inya lamented, “What makes this behaviour particularly unfair is that he was most likely aware that the university management had already awarded contracts for the renovation of some of the hostels,” the statement read.

The statement also criticised Onyia’s comments during a television interview where he allegedly described the university environment as “stinking.”

It further addressed claims concerning an alleged eviction involving a visually impaired student, stating that the allegation was later disputed by the university authorities and other groups, including the National Association of Nigerian Students.

“The contradiction of Mr Onyia’s claims by multiple independent voices inevitably raises serious questions about his intentions and credibility,” the statement added.

The university official questioned the objective behind Onyia’s criticism of the institution.

According to the statement, concerns were raised over whether the criticisms were intended to seek improvements within the university or draw public attention to the institution’s challenges.

The statement added that concerns about the university should be addressed through engagement and support.

The official also referenced Soludo’s recent visit to the university, noting that the governor acknowledged some ongoing infrastructural improvements within the campus despite existing challenges facing public tertiary institutions.
