Court remands Jigawa man over alleged defamatory remarks against APC chieftain

A Magistrate Court sitting in Dutse, Jigawa State, has remanded Habibu Muhammad Ringim over alleged defamatory statements against a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Faruk Adamu Aliyu.

Habibu Muhammad Ringim was arraigned before the court on Monday, May 11, 2026, over allegations of making defamatory statements against the APC chieftain on Premier Radio.

In his recent comments on Premier Radio, Ringim accused Aliyu of playing a key role in denying Dr Halima the party ticket to contest for the position of senator representing Jigawa South-West.

According to him, “Governor Namadi has directed that anyone interested in any political position should contest for it. Because Hon Adamu Aliyu knows the people of the zone don’t like him, he wanted to scuttle and sabotage Dr Halima’s chances.

“He has forgotten that he himself was once an ordinary person. About twenty years ago, he worked as a carpenter before he was given the opportunity to contest the House of Representatives seat representing Birnin Kudu and Buji. Now, he has started troubling people.

“People don’t like him because he does not help anyone. He was also among those who opposed Danmodi during the 2023 election and even took the matter to the Supreme Court in an attempt to nullify the election, but they were unsuccessful.”

After hearing from both parties, the judge ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody until May 28, 2026, for continuation of the case.

  • Mourinho In Final Negotiations To Return As Real Madrid’s Manager

Mourinho In Final Negotiations To Return As Real Madrid’s Manager

Jose Mourinho is in final negotiations to become Real Madrid’s next head coach, 13 years after his first spell at the Bernabeu.

The 63-year-old is the clear favourite – and currently the only candidate Real are in talks with over the role.

He would replace current head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, who only took charge in January following Xabi Alonso’s departure.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez first considered the possibility of Mourinho’s return two days after Xabi Alonso left the club, during initial conversations with the Portuguese coach’s representatives.

Mourinho has been manager of Benfica, in his native Portugal, since joining on a two-year contract last September, and only yesterday told media he did not want to talk about his future just yet.

“There’s a match against Estoril, and from Monday onwards I’ll be able to answer questions about my future as a coach and Benfica’s future,” he said.

Saturday’s game against Estoril Praia is Benfica’s last of the season.

From Sunday, Real Madrid will have a window to complete a deal for Mourinho at a relatively low cost.

A clause in his contract allows him to leave for 3m euros (£2.6m) up to 10 days after Benfica play their final match of the season.

He was in charge at Real between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.

After leaving the club he returned to England for a second stint at Chelsea, winning the third of his three Premier League titles, plus the EFL Cup, in the 2014-15 season.

Following his departure from the Blues by mutual consent in 2015, Mourinho then joined Manchester United on a three-year deal in 2016.

He won the Europa League, EFL Cup and Community Shield during his first season at Old Trafford but was sacked in December 2018 after a poor run of results.

Mourinho also had spells at Tottenham, Serie A side Roma, where he won the Europa Conference League in 2022, and Turkish club Fenerbahce, before taking over at Benfica last year.

Meanwhile, Real have ended their 2025-26 campaign trophyless, with rivals Barcelona sealing the La Liga title with a 2:0 El-Classico victory and by a 14-point margin.
Los Blancos’ Champions League run ended with a 6-4 aggregate defeat by German champions Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the club fined midfielders Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde a combined 1m euros this month following a dressing room row.

Valverde, 27, went to hospital with a head injury after the spat with 26-year-old France international Tchouameni but denied the pair “came to blows”.

Customs seizes 10,126 parcels of cannabis in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Ogun 1 Area Command, says it intercepted 10,126 parcels of cannabis sativa with a total Duty Paid Value, DPV, of N743,400,000 at different locations of the state.

The Area Comptroller, Mr Olukayode Afeni, disclosed this while handing over the drugs to Mr Williams Ekundayo, Commander, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Idiroko Special Area Command, on Tuesday

Afeni said that cannabis Sativa, commonly known as marijuana, is a psychoactive drug that has a devastating effect on consumers.

He said the operation was not a seizure but a preventive measure.

“Without this intervention, our society would face a wave of drug-related crises and our already overstretched healthcare and rehab system.

“Its availability would have spiked drug-related health issues and overwhelmed our strained psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities,” the comptroller said.

Receiving the drugs, Ekundayo said that the seizure was another milestone achievement in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

He commended the Customs officials that made the seizure and restated the call for greater synergy between the NDLEA and customs service

Ekundayo warned those engaged in such nefarious business to desist from such act, stressing, “If they persist, they would surely be arrested by law enforcement agencies”.

  • Genevieve Nnaji Returns To Screen In New BBC Production

Genevieve Nnaji Returns To Screen In New BBC Production

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a major return to the screen in Wahala, a new drama series produced by BBC Studios.

The six-part thriller, adapted by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko from Nikki May’s debut novel, will stream on BBC iPlayer and air on BBC One.

BBC announced the casting on Tuesday, unveiling a female-led ensemble that includes Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma alongside Nnaji.

Set in present-day London, Wahala follows the lives of four Nigerian-British women as they navigate friendship, careers, love, and family while confronting dark secrets from their past.

The story centres on Simi, Boo, and Ronke, played by Adedayo, Jumbo, and Wokoma respectively, whose long-standing friendship is shaken by the arrival of Isobel, portrayed by Ayorinde.

According to the producers, the drama explores themes of betrayal, buried truths, and the far-reaching consequences of long-hidden secrets.

Reacting to the project, Nnaji expressed enthusiasm about joining the production.

“I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story and I’m excited to be a part of it,” she said.

The project marks one of Nnaji’s most significant acting returns in recent years following the release of Lionheart, her directorial debut, which premiered internationally in 2018 before streaming on Netflix in January 2019.

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential actresses, Nnaji has maintained a relatively low public profile in recent years, heightening anticipation among fans over her latest role.

Wahala, which translates to “trouble” in Nigerian Pidgin, is being produced by Firebird Pictures, a production company under BBC Studios.

  • Enugu Residents Lament Glitches As INEC Begins Voter Registration

Enugu Residents Lament Glitches As INEC Begins Voter Registration

Some residents of Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Tuesday, lamented what they called “futile efforts” to register for permanent voters’ cards at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission located at the council headquarters, Obollo-Afor.

According to those that spoke with THE WHISTLER, the exercise was “too slow due to poor internet services”. They expressed worries that the electoral body seems to be unprepared for the last phase of the registration and revalidation of voters ahead of the 2027 general polls.

Lovena Mama is a trader. She said, “I left my shop since morning, and until this afternoon, I’m yet to be registered. They keep complaining of poor network. Their camera hardly captures human faces. Even thump printing is giving problems. I think they returned unprepared. I’ll return another day.”

Another victim said he is afraid of the capability of INEC to conduct glitch-free elections when the registration is not seamless.

“They keep telling us that the network will stabilise,” he said. “They started the third phase of the registration just yesterday, and the efficiency is lacking. If registration at the INEC designated offices can’t go smoothly, how can voting be satisfactory in rural areas during the general elections?

“I’m here to revalidate my PVC. Today is already wasted. It is the same reason why I didn’t complete the exercise in the past. They keep complaining of network. There is no power supply also, though that wasn’t the problem today. Throughout my stay, only one person was registered. Is this how we shall conduct the 2027 polls? I wonder!”

The registration officer was heard telling those complaining that the system would improve.

“We started today, and things are still normalising. The system will surely improve. We shall also go to various communities to revalidate voters and also conduct fresh registrations,” he said.

He encouraged eligible voters who have access to smart phones to register online and then come to the centre for data capture. According to him, “That will save a whole lot: time and network glitches.”
