Custom intercepts cannabis worth N5bn, rice, others in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Ogun Area 1 Command, has intercepted 10,126 parcels of Cannabis Indica, popularly known as Ghana Loud, at an estimated value of over N5 billion.

Recall that this seizure comes 41 days after the command handed over 2,543 parcels of cannabis sativa to the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command.

DAILY POST reports that among the other 72 seizures made are 26 sacks of raw cannabis sativa, 50 cartons of expired Maggi Star, 1,759 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice, 2,685 kegs of 25 litres and 16 kegs (2 litres) of Oki vegetable oil, and 16 kegs containing 14,550 litres of Premium Motor Spirit in jerrycans, 10 cartons of 21kg Basmati rice, and 77 cartons of 500mg Analgin injection with no NAFDAC registration number.

Others include 20 cartons of turkey vegetable oil, 3 litres each; 10 cartons of 21kg Basmati rice; 216 cartons of 20kg Basmati rice; 205 packs of footwear; 66 bales of secondhand clothing; 11 kegs of 25 litres of diesel; 46 bags of 25kg foreign sugar; seven sacks of secondhand clothing; two used vehicles; two sacks of ladies’ handbags; 16 cartons of organic honey; 858 packs of macaroni; two sacks of spaghetti; and six live pangolins already handed over to the relevant agency.

Speaking on Tuesday at a press briefing held at the Sentry Idiroko Border Post, the Acting Customs Area Comptroller, Olukayode Afeni, said the contraband items were intercepted at different locations within the state.

According to him, the seizures are proof of the command’s fight against smuggling operations, preventing the drainage of national resources through illegal trade and dismantling the organized networks that facilitate smuggling.

Afeni lamented the devastating effect of drugs on the lives of consumers, especially youths, adding that they have the potential to influence criminal activities such as armed robbery, banditry, cultism, kidnapping, terrorism and other vices.

He said, “We remain resolute in our duty to ensure that Ogun State and the nation at large remain a hostile environment for those who seek to undermine our economic stability.

“Through enhanced intelligence and inter-agency cooperation, the Command intercepted 73 seizures in just five weeks (41 days).

“The cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized items is N6,777,236,000. It is essential to state that the aforementioned items were intercepted at different locations within Ogun State with the aid of intensive intelligence strategies and concerted efforts of our intelligence personnel.

“From January to date, we have taken 26,002 parcels of cannabis off the streets. This isn’t just a seizure; it’s a preventive measure. Without this intervention, our society would face a wave of drug-related crises that our already overstretched healthcare and rehabilitation systems may not be able to handle.

“The Command, from March 16, 2026, up till this morning, May 12, 2026, generated and remitted into the Federation Account the sum of ₦125,430,757.00 in revenue through baggage assessment and the auction of seized petroleum products,” he added.

The acting comptroller reaffirmed the command’s commitment to residents’ safety and well-being, calling for public support and cooperation to boost economic growth.

Afeni handed over the seized banned substances to the Commander of the Idiroko Special Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ekundayo Williams, and lauded the collaborative efforts of other sister agencies and critical stakeholders in the fight against smugglers and economic saboteurs.

Save us from incessant road accidents – Ogbomoso residents beg Makinde [PHOTOS]

Residents of the Odo-Alamo area in Ogbomoso have appealed to the Oyo State Government under the leadership of Seyi Makinde to save them from incessant road accidents.

The residents lamented that the poor condition of the road serving the community has resulted in many road accidents.

They appealed to the state government to come to their aid.

The residents further lamented that the access road to the community has become greatly dilapidated and a death trap.

The residents of the community made these declarations on Tuesday after a lone accident in which a car fell into a ditch near the bridge over the Alamo Stream.

A community leader, Mr. Mathew Ogunkanmi, who spoke on behalf of the residents, said:

“The road has become dilapidated; it has become a death trap.”

A distraught resident lamented that successive administrations have neglected the community.

He, however, appealed to Makinde to come to their aid.

Ogunkanmi, while speaking, said, “We have made several appeals to successive council chairmen. Former chairmen such as Alhaji Ibrahim Toskay, Alhaji Kabir Ayoade and even the present chairman, Hon. George Ogunlade, all came, but nothing has been done.

“And it is sadder that the road is not among those being rehabilitated in Ogbomoso presently. Only Governor Makinde can help us now.”

Another resident of the community, Mrs. Kafilat Adekunle, disclosed that such accidents are common in the area because of the poor condition of the road serving the community.

Adekunle said, “Something needs to be done to alleviate our suffering, and urgently too. Government should please come to our aid.

“The car, it was said by eyewitnesses, fell into the ditch while reversing. It crashed and landed on its back, with its four tyres glaring at the sky.”

  • Lagos needs 33,000 doctors to meet healthcare demands – Commissioner

Lagos needs 33,000 doctors to meet healthcare demands – Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has revealed that the state requires about 40,000 medical doctors to adequately meet the healthcare demands of its rapidly growing population, but currently has only about 7,000 doctors in its health system.

The government said the shortfall has created a manpower deficit of more than 33,000 physicians across the state’s healthcare sector.

The Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, disclosed this on Tuesday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja, to mark the seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

According to Abayomi, Lagos also faces a shortage of about 40,000 nurses and other healthcare personnel needed to strengthen service delivery across public health institutions.

He explained that the shortage forms part of a wider global healthcare workforce crisis affecting many countries.

“Nigeria has 40,000 doctors currently at a ratio of one doctor to 5,000 population. Nigeria needs 300,000 new doctors while Lagos requires 40,000 additional doctors. Currently, Lagos has 7,000. The gap for Lagos is 30,000 doctors and 40,000 nurses,” he said.

The commissioner noted that despite the challenge, Lagos was gradually becoming more attractive to medical professionals.

“For every doctor we have in Lagos, they are doing the job of ten,” he added.

Abayomi said the state government was implementing several measures aimed at reducing brain drain within the health sector while encouraging Nigerian medical professionals abroad to return home.

According to him, the government is pursuing healthcare financing reforms, improving staff welfare and upgrading living and working conditions for health workers.

“To reduce the brain drain and facilitate brain gain, the Lagos State government is prioritising healthcare finance reform, improve the working conditions of health workers, improve the living conditions of health workers and facilitate the return of Nigerian doctors in diaspora,” he stated.

He disclosed that accommodation projects for medical personnel were ongoing in several state-owned hospitals.

Abayomi said the government recently completed a 72-unit accommodation facility for house officers at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, while similar projects at Odan, Gbagada and Ojo hospitals were nearing completion.

He added that future medical facilities planned by the government would include staff quarters located close to hospitals to improve convenience and welfare for healthcare workers.

The commissioner further revealed that LASUTH currently has about 120 medical specialists, while general hospitals across the state collectively have around 250 specialists.

  • Russia tests new nuclear-capable long-range missile

Russia tests new nuclear-capable long-range missile

Russia on Tuesday carried out a test launch of a new long-range missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads, months after the expiration of the last major arms control treaty between Moscow and the United States limiting their nuclear arsenals.

The lapse of the New START treaty in February formally removed several restrictions governing the strategic nuclear capabilities of the world’s two largest nuclear powers.

Speaking after receiving a report on the missile test, Vladimir Putin described the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as the most powerful missile system currently available.

“This is the most powerful missile system in the world,” Putin said following the reported successful launch.

According to the Russian president, the missile is capable of carrying a nuclear payload significantly stronger than those possessed by Western military powers.

He further stated that the Sarmat system would be placed on combat duty before the end of the year.

Although Moscow and Washington agreed to resume high-level military dialogue shortly after the expiration of the New START agreement, there have been no concrete indications of plans to renew or replace the treaty.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has repeatedly advocated for a broader nuclear agreement that would also include China, whose nuclear stockpile continues to expand, though it remains smaller than those of Russia and the United States.

Beijing, however, has publicly resisted calls to join such an arrangement.

Trump had largely remained silent regarding Russia’s earlier appeals for an extension of the New START treaty, which was signed in 2010 as the latest in a series of nuclear arms agreements dating back to the Cold War era.

Over the years, both Moscow and Washington have accused each other of violating aspects of the agreement.

The Sarmat missile, known within NATO as “Satan II,” is regarded as the first “super heavy” intercontinental ballistic missile developed by post-Soviet Russia.

Putin said the missile has a range of approximately 35,000 kilometres, or about 22,000 miles.
