  • UUTH shut as EFCC attempt to arrest staff

UUTH shut as EFCC attempt to arrest staff

Activities at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UUTH, Akwa Ibom State, were brought to a halt on Tuesday, May 12, following the attempted arrest and eventual arrest of Prof. Effiong Ekpe and three other staff members of the hospital by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Uyo Zonal Office.

It was gathered that EFCC officials, while attempting to arrest Prof. Ekpe, who is the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, CMAC, on a court warrant, met resistance from other staff members of the hospital, while the hospital security also locked the gate, barring their exit from the facility.

It was further gathered that the operatives called for backup as the atmosphere became tense before the police arrived.

Following the incident, Dr. Aniekan Peters, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, directed doctors across the state to immediately shut down services, while JOHESU leaders also declared a total hospital shutdown in protest against what they described as an inhumane and barbaric act.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Gabriel Eyo, said the action of the EFCC was an onslaught on the hospital and its workers.

Eyo said it was wrong for a professor of cardiothoracic surgery and the only one in the state, to be treated like a criminal, noting that the man was injured in the process. As such, the strike was called to protest the alleged injustice.

“Prof. Ekpe is the professor of cardiothoracic surgery, the only one we have in Akwa Ibom State. Anyway, we don’t know what he has done, but we don’t really care at this point. Whatever he did, there is due process for this kind of thing. Even criminals are not treated this way. The only thing that should have been done would have been to send an invitation, which was not done.

“The NMA just had a meeting of its members, so we’ve begun the indefinite strike. The resolutions will be made public very soon.”

Meanwhile, the police have distanced themselves from involvement in the arrest of the professor, saying their operatives were only drafted to the scene to calm the situation and verify the authenticity of the officers who came for the arrest.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, said he ordered some policemen to join the EFCC officials to pick up a staff member of the hospital on the instruction of the judge in an ongoing court case.

Azare said that before the policemen entered the hospital premises for the arrest, he had informed the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Emem Bassey, to instruct his staff to grant the policemen access into the premises.

“The EFCC went for an arrest in the hospital this morning, and the CMD called me to verify if my men were among those in the hospital.

“I called the head of the EFCC, who confirmed to me that they were actually the ones who went to pick up that person on the instruction of the court. Right now, they are in court and handling a court case, and the judge stood down the matter and ordered that they bring that person. That is why they went to bring him.

“I called the CMD and advised him to open the gate for them to take the man because it is a legitimate duty.”

However, the spokesperson of the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, in a statement dismissed allegations of assault by the operatives on anyone, saying rather that the officers suffered unprovoked attacks and resistance when they visited the facility for “inquiries.”

Speaking on why the EFCC operatives visited the UUTH in the first place, Oyewale explained: “The operatives’ visit was informed by the need to authenticate a medical report presented by a suspect under remand by Justice M.A. Onyetunu of the Federal High Court, Uyo, for allegedly defrauding multiple microfinance banks, including the University of Uyo Microfinance Bank.

“The suspect had presented a medical report which required authentication by the UUTH management. The Commission wrote two different letters, dated March 11, 2026, and April 20, 2026, to the hospital management to this effect without receiving any response. The Investigating Officer handling the matter took the further step of visiting the hospital to enquire about the status of the request. Still, no response.

“As a last resort, operatives of the commission visited the chief medical director of the hospital on Tuesday to make further enquiries, only to be locked in with a false alarm and subjected to unprovoked attacks by misguided staff of the facility, who pelted them with stones and other dangerous objects.

“While within the hospital, the CMD reportedly directed that the gates of the facility be shut, making it impossible for any lawful enquiry to be made. Police authorities in Akwa Ibom State advised the CMD to open the hospital gates to enable the operatives to exit the premises peacefully, but the entreaties were turned down.

“In spite of the hostility and provocation, there was no breakdown of law and order as the operatives exercised restraint and professionally made their way out of the hospital premises without disrupting its activities.

“Enquiries bordering on operational engagements of the Commission are lawful. It is therefore necessary to remind the public and corporate bodies that they are obligated to cooperate with the agency in such circumstances. Contrary action could be deemed obstruction, which is criminal with attendant legal consequences.”

Police Arrest 55 Kidnap Suspects, Rescue 58 Victims In Edo

The Police Command in Edo State, says it has arrested 55 suspected kidnappers and rescued 58 abducted victims in a major crackdown on violent crimes across the state.

The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Monday Agbonika, said this while presenting the command’s operational scorecard for March till date, at a news conference in Benin on Tuesday.

Agbonika said that the command also arrested 15 suspected cultists, eight armed robbery suspects, 15 murder suspects, three suspects linked to unlawful possession of firearms and 23 suspects connected to rape and defilement cases.

According to him, the achievements reflect the command’s new intelligence-driven policing strategy, and increased deployment of technology in crime fighting.

“Today is not just about figures, statistics or data. It is about the resilience, sacrifice, strategic planning and operational transformation currently ongoing within the Edo Police Command,” he said.

The police commissioner noted that the command had intensified the use of drones, digital tracking systems, surveillance gadgets and intelligence-led operations to tackle kidnapping and violent crimes, especially in Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial Districts.

He cited the recent rescue of one Mrs Ezighode Ebosele and her 14-year-old son, Wisdom, who were kidnapped on May 1, at Udoni Quarters, Irrua.

According to him, operatives deployed aerial surveillance technology and technical intelligence to rescue the victims unhurt and arrest the alleged kingpin, Yusuf Hassan, popularly known as “Dogo Yellow”, alongside nine other gang members.

He said investigations revealed that the syndicate operated a structured criminal network involving informants, food suppliers, ransom negotiators and armed enforcers.

“The syndicate was also actively recruiting new members into their criminal operations,” Agbonika said.

He added that the alleged kingpin was arrested at a criminal hideout near Ubiaja, which had since been demolished and confiscated by the Edo Government under the state’s anti-kidnapping law.

The Edo police chief also revealed that operatives foiled another kidnap attempt on May 8, along the Benin-Akure Road between Ozoguo and Obazuwa communities.

He said police operatives, supported by military personnel, engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel and rescued two victims, Mr Okarewagba Benth and his wife, Ruth, unhurt.

He also said bush combing operations were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

He further said that the command, recovered two AK-47 rifles, six pump-action guns, seven locally-made firearms and 13 cartridges and other ammunition during the operations.

The police boss also expressed concerns over rising cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the state.

According to him, within the last two months alone, the command has arrested more than 23 suspects linked to rape, defilement and other SGBV-related offences.

“This trend is painful, unacceptable and deeply concerning.”

Agbonika assured residents that the command would sustain aggressive operations against criminal elements and continue to strengthen tactical capacity and investigative professionalism across the state.

  • Wike Host Bodies Of Benchers , Promise To Improve Infrastructure At Law School

Wike Host Bodies Of Benchers , Promise To Improve Infrastructure At Law School

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday challenged professional bodies in Nigeria to focus less on public criticism and more on attracting tangible development to their institutions and members.

Wike spoke in Abuja while hosting delegates of the Body of Benchers led by its Chairman, Albert Akpomudje, during a courtesy visit at his official residence in Life Camp.

The minister said leaders of professional associations should be remembered for projects and reforms they attracted while in office, rather than for frequent appearances on television criticising government.

“What is leadership all about? At the end of your tenure, what will you say is your legacy?” Wike asked.

“You cannot occupy a position and all you do is criticise government every day. People will ask you: while you had the opportunity, what did you do for your profession?”

He said successive leaders of the Body of Benchers had demonstrated exemplary leadership by consistently seeking government intervention to improve infrastructure and facilities for the legal profession.

“You are not the first chairman of the Body of Benchers, but you came with requests that will improve the institution and open up the area for everybody. That is leadership,” he said.

Wike noted that under the current administration, the annex building of the Body of Benchers was nearing completion and would be delivered by June, while the access road around the Nigerian Law School and EFCC Academy corridor was already 98 per cent completed.

He also approved a new request for an access road to the Body of Benchers annex building, directing relevant officials of the FCT Administration to immediately assess and incorporate the project into ongoing works.

The minister used the occasion to criticise what he described as “destructive criticism” by some professional groups, insisting that constructive engagement with government yields better results.

“Constructive criticism is good, but not the kind where nobody sees anything good in what government is doing,” he stated.

He particularly faulted criticisms surrounding government-built houses for judges, arguing that providing infrastructure and welfare support for judicial officers strengthens institutions rather than compromises them.

“If government provides accommodation for judges, people say they are compromised. But if the same government provides money for judges to provide official accommodation, they won’t talk about compromise. Also, when the NBA goes about seeking support from government, nobody talks about compromise,” Wike said.

According to him, professional associations should devote more energy to identifying gaps in their sectors and partnering government to address them.

“If you are president of an association and all you do is attend television programmes to criticise government, that is not enough. What did you attract for your members? What did you improve?” he queried.

Earlier, His Royal Highness Akpomudje commended the FCT Administration for what he described as remarkable infrastructural transformation across Abuja, especially projects benefiting the legal profession.

He said the Body of Benchers was grateful for the completion of its annex building, the ongoing fire service station project and the construction of access roads within the complex.

“Roads are being constructed and upgraded daily both in the city centre and rural areas. Indeed, this is what governance should be,” he said.

Akpomudje added that collaboration among the executive, legislature and judiciary remained essential for strengthening democratic institutions and improving access to justice in Nigeria.

  • Fire outbreak destroys 24 shops in Kwara

Fire outbreak destroys 24 shops in Kwara

A major fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday destroyed 24 shops at the popular Mandate Market in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

The incident, according to the spokesman of the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, occurred at about 04:44 hours.

The fire involved a market comprising over 200 shops, out of which 24 were affected.

The spokesman disclosed that the magnitude of destruction was largely intensified due to a late call made to the state fire service, as the fire had already spread significantly before firefighters arrived at the scene.

Nevertheless, the gallant firefighters of the state fire service displayed exceptional courage and professionalism in combating the inferno and successfully averted further destruction across the market.

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a power surge.

“The fire reportedly started in a shop where phone accessories were sold alongside a phone-charging business, before spreading to nearby shops used for storing foodstuffs and other commodities.”

Traders and market stakeholders at the scene commended the efforts of the firefighters for their swift intervention and for preventing the fire from engulfing the entire market.

At about 10:00 hours, the Director of the state fire service, Alabi Muhammed, personally visited the scene to sympathise with the affected traders.

During the visit, he met with both the male and female heads of the market associations, expressing deep concern over the incident and reassuring them of the fire service’s continued support.

The Director urged market operators to invest in both active and passive fire safety measures, including the installation of fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, fire alarms, and proper electrical protection devices, especially in situations where shop owners may not be present during emergencies.

Alabi Muhammed also reminded market leaders about the annual fire safety sensitisation programmes organised by the state fire service across markets in the state, emphasising the need for traders to actively participate and implement the safety recommendations provided during such engagements.
