Iranian gunboat opens fire on container vessel near Oman

A container vessel was reportedly struck by gunfire from an Iranian naval craft off the coast of Oman on Wednesday, in an incident that damaged the ship’s bridge but left all crew members safe, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations, UKMTO.

The UKMTO said the ship’s master reported that an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, gunboat approached the vessel before opening fire, causing visible damage to the bridge area.

Despite the attack, authorities confirmed that there were no resulting fires or environmental pollution linked to the incident.

The event occurred approximately 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman’s coastline.

The maritime agency further stated that the vessel was able to continue its voyage after the incident, with all personnel on board reported unharmed.

Security officials have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack, which adds to growing concerns over maritime safety amid rising tensions in the Gulf region.

Otti Begins 1,200 Housing Units In Umuahia, Lauds FG Collaboration

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has begun the construction of at least 1,200 housing units under the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Renewed Hope Housing Project in Umuahia, the state capital.

The initiative is a joint venture between the Federal Government, through the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), and the Abia State Government, designed to increase the availability of affordable housing for residents. With the groundbreaking, Abia became the first state in the South-East and among the first five states nationwide to collaborate with the Federal Government under President Tinubu on the project.

Speaking at the ceremony held on Tuesday, at the project site along Ubani–Uzuakoli Road in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Governor Otti revealed that the initiative stemmed from earlier engagements with the leadership of the FHA.

He explained that the Authority’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer had presented the proposal at a time when his administration was already developing plans to deliver affordable housing for residents of Abia.

Governor Otti conveyed his gratitude to the FHA leadership for their dedication to the project and also praised Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, for driving the Renewed Hope Housing initiative.

“I want to underscore the point that while we are working on our own to provide affordable housing for our people, Honorable Ojo reached out to me and said, I want to come to your State. That was two years ago, 2024.

“And I said, please come. I’m always happy to receive my friends and brothers. And he came. And the request was for land. And I said, consider it done. But we didn’t know it would happen so quickly,” Gov. Otti stated.

Governor Otti conveyed his gratitude to the FHA leadership for their dedication to the project and also praised Bola Tinubu, for driving the Renewed Hope Housing initiative.

In his words, “So, that is what we have focused on here. And I like what he (MD/CEO) said. Everything, call it politics, call it ethnicity, call it religion, all those are distractions.

“The important thing to our people is the welfare of our people. And no matter what happens, our attention will continue to remain on the welfare of our people. That’s why we are here,” Gov. Otti stated.

The Governor stated that prior to approving the groundbreaking ceremony, all confirmed landowners from the host communities who contributed roughly 100 hectares of land for the housing project had been fully compensated. He urged those who have not yet received their payments due to banking issues or ownership disputes to quickly address these matters so they can access their funds, which have already been deposited in the bank.

“These lands are owned by families and individuals. So, we didn’t deal with communities. We dealt with families and individuals, the original owners of the land.

“And the information available to me, at least, I know I signed off, over 900 claimants, those who own the land. At the last count, anybody that has not been paid, it means there is a problem.

“That means it’s either that your account number is wrong or there are more than two or three families and individuals claiming the land.

“Over 800 out of the around 900 claimants have been settled in full. So, the remaining less than 100 people, please resolve your problem so that you can take your money. The money is sitting in the bank and is not earning interest for the State,” Gov. Otti stated.

In their goodwill messages, members representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Augustine Meregini and the Commissioner representing Abia at the Federal Character Commissioner, Chief Victor Ikeji, thanked President Tinubu and Governor Otti for facilitating the housing project in Umuahia after 18 years of back and forth, describing the project as a laudable one.

In his address, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Federal Housing Authority, Hon. Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo said that the event was a way of cementing the commitment of realising the construction of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Housing programme in all the States of Nigeria.

“Our choice of kickstarting this project in the Eastern part of the country from Umuahia is very deliberate. Your Excellency, the hospitality and warm reception you gave to our management on Tuesday, 10th May, 2024, when we were visiting state Governors, soliciting for land for this programme remains indelible in our memory.

“Not only did you (Gov. Otti) readily tell us that your government has mapped out the land for us, you also promised to assist us in getting off – takers, true to your love of housing for your people of Abia state.

“Mr. President’s charge that the programme should be apolitical, irrespective of political affiliation, was very clear and unambiguous.

“Your Excellency, we are not only developing an estate in Umuahia, we are going to create an environment that is the trademark and signature Federal Housing Authority is noted for, which would be the pride of Abians,” Hon. Ojo stated.

Hon. Ojo applauded the leadership approach of Dr. Otti, stating that the Governor has recorded impressive achievements across multiple sectors of the economy. He noted that Aba has undergone a significant transformation under the present administration and is no longer plagued by the waste management issues that once defined it.

He also commended the Governor’s progress in infrastructure development in Aba and across the State, highlighting the allocation of land and timely compensation for the housing project. Hon. Ojo stressed that good governance should not be driven by party loyalty, but by a sincere dedication to serving the people.

“I have known you (Governor) during your days in Diamond Bank. You are an accomplished banker. So, what I’m saying is just a continuation in what our President is also doing at the national level.

“Sometimes, it’s not about politics or political party. I always tell people that it’s about who can do the work.

“You don’t talk about religion. You don’t talk about ethnicity. All you talk about is the progress of human beings,” Hon. Ojo stated.

The Commissioner for Housing, Architect Chiemela Uzoije, alongside the Commissioner for Lands, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije, also spoke at the event. They recalled that the project was conceived 18 years ago and expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Governor Otti for their dedication to bringing it to fruition for the benefit of the people.

They noted that the collaboration between the State and Federal Governments represents a decisive effort to bridge gaps in housing provision, adding that the initiative would stimulate much-needed development along the corridor.

On behalf of the host and donor communities, the representative of the Presidents-General, Hon. Ugochukwu Ibe, conveyed his appreciation to the President and Governor Otti, while offering prayers for the swift completion of the project.

The Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, the President Customary Court of Appeal Okey Nwamoh, members of the State House of Assembly, SSG, Commissioners and top government officials, traditional rulers, members of the clergy including Archbishop Raphael Opoko among others were present at the event.

Terrorists kill two, abduct seven in Southern Kaduna fresh attack

Suspected terrorists, on Monday, launched a fresh attack on Awon community in Kaduna State, killing two residents and abducting at least seven others in what locals described as a worsening wave of violence targeting vulnerable communities in Southern Kaduna.

The victims killed in the attack are identified as Joseph Sule, popularly known as “Big Joe,” and Awilo Madugu.

A source told DAILY POST that those abducted included Gift Victor, Hannatu Yusuf, Salina Sam, Silvia Sam, Dogarah Maisamari, Hassana Bulus, and Joy Samaila.

He lamented that the incessant attacks being experienced in parts of Southern Kaduna call for serious attention by the government to save the locals from what he described as “deliberate attempts to completely wipe away the people from their ancestral home.”

According to him, “With the new wave of attacks in the area, residents are living in fear following the activities of terrorists who are killing and abducting people almost on a daily basis, thereby making life unbearable.”

A community leader, who sought anonymity, called on the government and security agencies to act swiftly and ensure the safety of the people and their property.

Residents say the latest assault has left the community traumatized, with growing frustration over what they described as inadequate and delayed security response in most of the attacks.

Awon community leaders are calling for urgent intervention by security agencies to secure the release of the abducted victims, strengthen security presence, and prevent further attacks in the area, other parts of Southern Kaduna, and the entire country.

The incident adds to the growing concerns over persistent attacks on communities in parts of Kaduna State, where residents continue to face repeated threats to their lives and livelihoods.

  • Ex Gov Okowa Accuses Sen Nwoko Of Plot To Shift Anioma To South East, Scrap Asaba As Capital

Ex Gov Okowa Accuses Sen Nwoko Of Plot To Shift Anioma To South East, Scrap Asaba As Capital

Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has criticised Senator Ned Nwoko over his position on the proposed Anioma State, accusing him of pursuing an agenda that could undermine the region’s interests.

Okowa made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oshimili South Local Government Area during consultations ahead of his 2027 senatorial ambition.

He alleged that Nwoko was scheming to align Anioma with the South-East geopolitical zone and diminish the status of Asaba as a state capital, a move he described as misguided and unacceptable to the people of Delta North.

According to Okowa, the people of Anioma are united in their demand for the creation of a separate state within the South-South geopolitical zone, comprising the nine local government areas, with Asaba as its headquarters.

“There have been misconceptions and misrepresentations in the media regarding Anioma State,” he said, stressing that no Anioma indigene is opposed to the state’s creation under the South-South framework.

In an apparent reference to Nwoko, Okowa criticised attempts to alter the status of Asaba, noting that significant efforts had been made to establish the city as the capital of Delta State.

“An Asaba daughter fought for us and today we have Asaba as headquarters. Someone who does not understand how it came about now wants to wish it away. That is unwise,” he said.

The former governor also faulted Nwoko’s approach to the Anioma State campaign, describing it as lacking broad consultation and grassroots input.

He emphasised the need for inclusive dialogue, noting that any successful push for state creation must reflect the collective will of the people.

Okowa further questioned the timing of Nwoko’s advocacy, pointing out that legislative processes for state creation were not currently at a decisive stage.

He warned against misleading the public, insisting that the realisation of Anioma State would depend on a united position by stakeholders and alignment with constitutional procedures.

He reaffirmed that the demand for Anioma State remains strong but must be pursued collectively, in collaboration with the current administration and the people of the region.

  • Revealed: Why Tinubu Sacked Finance Minister Wale Edun

Revealed: Why Tinubu Sacked Finance Minister Wale Edun

That have been many speculations on why President Bola Tinubu removed the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, in a dramatic cabinet reshuffle that has sent shockwaves through the Federal Executive Council

One of them is the renewed attention on the lawmaker who first exposed the financial scandal now haunting the administration.

That lawmaker is Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, whose relentless questioning during a February budget defence hearing laid bare a staggering truth: ₦1.15 trillion in approved capital funds had vanished into thin air, with zero disbursement to any capital project across Nigeria.

It was Wednesday, February 25, 2026, when Hon. Mascot—a key member of the House Committee on Aids and Loans—took the floor at the Appropriation Committee’s budget defence session. Armed with insider documents from his committee assignment, he painted a disturbing picture: billions of dollars in loans had been secured, record revenues had been generated by FIRS and Customs, yet not a single kobo had reached any capital project. Roads, hospitals, schools—all left to rot while funds sat untouched.

Then came the question that silenced the entire room: “Why the capital of the Nigerian government remains at zero in 2026?”

When a flustered Minister Edun tried to shift responsibility to his Minister of State, Doris Uzoka-Anite, Hon. Mascot refused to back down. The committee adjourned and summoned her. She appeared the next day, confirmed the funds were approved, but blamed “pre-disbursement conditions.” Hon. Mascot was ready. He asked her a simple question: name one ministry that met all conditions and was still denied funding. She could not name a single one.

Exactly one week later, on March 3, Uzoka-Anite was removed as Minister of State for Finance—her third portfolio in two years.

Now, less than two months after that historic hearing, Wale Edun has also been sacked. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced his removal in a memo dated April 20, 2026, citing the need to “strengthen cohesion” in governance. Taiwo Oyedele, who was appointed Minister of State after Uzoka-Anite’s fall, has now been elevated to substantive Minister of Finance.

There is the theory of the failing health of the Minister

Few months ago , Mr Edun took a short leave to attend to his health

Rumour had it that he suffered a stroke , which he later debunked but those in the know claimed the former Lagos State Commissioner has not been in the best of health  and not performing optimally in a very sensitive Ministry hence the need for him to step aside to take care of his health
