Gender-Based violence: Stakeholders seek stronger action in Jigawa

Stakeholders in Jigawa State have called for stronger collaboration and increased public reporting of gender-based violence (GBV) cases to curb the rising menace across the state and the North-West region.

The call was made during a state dialogue on combating GBV in Jigawa State, organised under the Male Feminist Project executed by the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD).

Speaking at the event, Programme Officer of the project, Sani Saidu Muhammad, said the dialogue was convened to hear from key stakeholders, including religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media, and security agencies, on the root causes of GBV and practical ways to address it.

He noted that Jigawa records one of the highest numbers of underreported GBV cases, stressing the need to engage communities and institutions to ensure survivors and witnesses speak out.

According to him, many incidents of rape, domestic violence, and other abuses go unreported because of cultural, religious, and social norms, as well as the stigma attached to such cases.

He said the organisers hope to see a rise in reported cases, not because violence is increasing, but because victims and community members are breaking their silence.

Muhammad urged residents to report every case of abuse, saying, “When you see something, say something. If people keep silent, the cases will continue to increase, and perpetrators will go unpunished.”

Also speaking, the Divisional Police Officer of Dutse Division, Shehu Hamdallahi, advised members of the public to always report GBV-related offences, assuring that offenders would be prosecuted according to the law.

He commended the Jigawa State Government for implementing the Violence Against Persons (VAPP) Law, describing it as a major step toward protecting vulnerable persons.

Religious leaders at the dialogue also pledged to sensitise the public on the importance of reporting gender-based violence and supporting survivors.

House of Reps aspirant seeks collaboration between govt, traditional rulers

An aspirant for the House of Representatives seat of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Sarah Ivie Adidi, has made a case for effective collaboration between the government and traditional rulers.

Adidi said sustained collaboration between traditional institutions and the government would strengthen governance and enhance development outcomes, especially at the community level.

She spoke while presenting rams to newly elevated first-class traditional rulers in the FCT, as a mark of honour and in appreciation of their unifying role in their domains.

Adidi said the gesture was intended to recognise the vital and critical role of the royal fathers in fostering peaceful coexistence and unity among residents within their respective domains in the nation’s capital.

According to her, royal fathers have continued to provide leadership and guidance at the grassroots level, contributing significantly to stability and community development in the FCT.

The aspirant noted that the donation was a demonstration of her deep appreciation for the traditional institution, which she described as a stabilising force in the nation’s capital.

Adidi further noted that traditional rulers continue to play indispensable roles in conflict resolution, community leadership and the preservation of cultural values in various communities in the nation’s capital.

She added that the gesture was equally aimed at ensuring that the royal fathers feel recognised, appreciated and to herald the forthcoming Sallah celebration.

She said, “Our traditional rulers are the custodians of our heritage and the bridge between government and the people at the grassroots. This small gesture is a way of appreciating their fatherly roles and their continuous efforts in maintaining peaceful coexistence among diverse communities in the FCT.”

She reiterated her commitment to inclusive representation, promising to prioritise policies and programmes that would promote unity, security and socio-economic advancement across AMAC and Bwari Area councils if elected into the House of Representatives.

Some of those presented with the rams include His Royal Highness Alhaji Awwal Musa Ijakoro II Sarkin Bwari; His Royal Highness Dr. Usman Nga Kupi, Sa’peyi of Garki, and His Royal Highness Alhaji Ismaila Mohammed, Sarki Karshi.

The traditional rulers commended the aspirant for the gesture, describing it as timely and symbolic, particularly as Muslims prepare for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

They noted that such acts of recognition would further strengthen the relationship between political actors and traditional institutions, while also encouraging continued efforts toward peace-building and community development in the FCT.

Apologize for ADC comment – Bode George tells Tinubu’s aide, Gbajabiamila

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bode George, has asked Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, to issue a public apology over remarks attributed to him regarding the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The demand follows the circulation of a video in which Gbajabiamila was seen encouraging a faction of the ADC, led by Nafiu Gombe and House of Representatives member, Leke Abejide, to sustain internal disruptions within the party.

Gbajabiamila, who spoke at a birthday event hosted by Abejide, praised the lawmaker for what he described as significant contributions to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He also advised him to disregard overtures from APC members seeking his formal defection to the ruling party.

Reacting to the development, George described the comments as inappropriate and urged the presidential aide to retract them.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, George expressed surprise at Gbajabiamila’s remarks, noting that while mistakes can occur, the statement was a serious political misstep.

George maintained that a public apology was necessary, stressing that although he holds Gbajabiamila in high regard, he strongly disagreed with the comments and viewed them as unacceptable.

George said: “I’m very shocked when I saw the video of my younger brother, Femi Gbajabiamila, you know that people make mistakes and I did not under any kind of circumstances believe that he would make that kind of mistake.

“It was utterly wrong and he must apologize to the public for that statement, that is my stand, he is my brother and I can’t denounce him but what he said was a monumental political mistake, he should apologize for making that mistake publicly. I don’t agree with him.”

The lawmakers made their position known after a majority caucus meeting, where they deliberated on party unity, internal cohesion and recent political developments within the state.

Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, who addressed journalists after the meeting, said APC legislators remain firmly aligned with the governor’s decision.

“We have discussed issues around unity, peace, and progress of our party, including the endorsement of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as Governor Sule’s preferred successor. As APC lawmakers, we are united, loyal to the party, and will abide by the governor’s choice,” he stated.

Jatau commended Governor Sule for what he described as effective leadership and cooperation among the various arms of government in the state, noting that such synergy has contributed to peace and development.

“We appreciate His Excellency for the way he is managing the affairs of the state. The relationship between the executive and the legislature has brought stability and progress,” he added.

Reaffirming their position, the lawmakers declared full backing for Senator Wadada, insisting that their earlier commitment during consultations with governorship aspirants remains unchanged.

The Speaker also called on other APC aspirants to accept the governor’s decision and work towards party unity ahead of the next general elections, urging collective mobilisation for the party’s success.

A senatorial aspirant of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nasarawa North, Duba Ishaya Dodo, has formally resigned his membership of the party with immediate effect.

Dodo communicated his decision in a letter dated April 21, 2026, and addressed to the SDP chairman in his Gudi Ward, Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
