We’re closely monitoring Ebola situation — Nigerian Govt

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, says it has stepped up surveillance and emergency response following an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a confirmed imported case in Uganda.

In a public health advisory signed by NCDC Director-General, Dr  Jide Idris, the agency said it was closely monitoring developments in affected countries and coordinating preparedness efforts with the Port Health Services and other stakeholders.

“Response activities are ongoing in affected areas, and we are ensuring continued vigilance within Nigeria’s public health system,” Idris said.

Highlighting preparedness measures activated, Idris said NCDC had strengthened nationwide surveillance systems for Ebola and other epidemic-prone diseases, while intensifying event-based monitoring and coordination with state health authorities.

Other measures include enhancing laboratory and diagnostic readiness, strengthening infection prevention and control awareness in healthcare settings, and expanding community engagement and public risk communication.

According to him, the agency was closely tracking global and regional developments to ensure a rapid response if the situation changed.

DAILY POST reports that Ebola Virus Disease is a severe and often fatal viral infection transmitted through direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids or contaminated materials of infected persons or animals.

The health agency further stated that the disease has an incubation period ranging from two to 21 days.

‘No election held’ – Kosofe APC aspirant rejects primary results

A House of Representatives aspirant for Kosofe Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Hon. Oluremi Oluwalogbon-Odunsi, has rejected the results being circulated from the party’s primary election held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, insisting that no valid election took place in the constituency.

Oluwalogbon-Odunsi maintained that the figures and declarations currently making the rounds did not emerge from any recognised voting process.

She further alleged that both Mayor Adele Osinowo and the incumbent lawmaker representing the constituency, Hon. Khafilat Ogbara, separately declared themselves winners of the primary election.

In a statement issued after the exercise, the aspirant described the situation as a violation of the procedures laid down by the APC for the conduct of primary elections.

“I reject the purported results being circulated and announced in respect of the primary election held yesterday,” she stated.

According to her, the rejection was based on the claim that no voting exercise was conducted in Kosofe Federal Constituency on the scheduled date.

She argued that the circulation of figures and declarations despite the absence of an actual election undermined the credibility of the process and contravened the party’s internal democratic guidelines.

Oluwalogbon-Odunsi called on the leadership and stakeholders of the APC to urgently intervene in order to safeguard the integrity of the primary process and uphold democratic standards within the party.

She stressed that the credibility and reputation of the APC depended largely on transparent and credible internal elections.

“Accordingly, I do not recognise or accept the purported outcome being circulated, acknowledging the results would amount to endorsing a process that did not follow due process,” she said.

The aspirant disclosed that a formal petition and appeal detailing her observations, concerns and requests had already been submitted to the appropriate party authorities for urgent consideration.

She expressed confidence that the party leadership would review the matter thoroughly and take the necessary corrective measures.

Oluwalogbon-Odunsi also urged APC officials at both the state and national levels to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged declaration of results, noting that only a transparent review process could restore confidence among aspirants, delegates and party members in the constituency.

She reaffirmed her loyalty to the APC and its democratic ideals, insisting that her position was aimed at strengthening the party rather than creating division ahead of the general elections.

The APC had yet to officially respond to the allegations as of the time of filing this report.

Embarrassing, ridiculous – Labour Party speaks on Julius Abure’s sale of nomination forms

The Labour Party, LP, has reacted to pictures on social media showing its sacked National Chairman, Julius Abure, handing out “nomination forms” to different people in Abia State.

The party, in a statement on Sunday, described the development as embarrassing and ridiculous, stressing that the Nenadi Usman leadership is the only one that can issue such forms.

“It should be clearly stated that Senator Nenadi Usman is the National Chairman of the Labour Party. All legitimate nomination forms for any elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections can only be obtained from the official National Secretariat of the party located in Utako, Abuja,” a statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said.

“Because of this, any Labour Party nomination form obtained from Julius Abure or any other unauthorized source is simply useless paper being spread by political tricksters who want to deceive innocent people.

“The public is encouraged to stay alert and avoid falling for the tricks of desperate political frauds pretending to be party officials. It’s interesting to wonder why Abure’s illegal “sales” activities appear to be concentrated only in Abia State.

“If he thinks that Governor Alex Otti, the party’s national leader, will give in to small-time blackmail, threats, or political tricks, he is very wrong. Julius Abure’s continued act of pretending to be the National Chairman of the Labour Party is a serious crime that has important legal consequences and has gone too far.

“As a lawyer, he should know better. “The situation is getting more serious for him, and soon he will have to face the consequences of his actions in front of the police and the courts.”
