The All Progressives Congress, APC, National Assembly Screening Committee has cleared former Kogi governor Yahaya and Kogi West senator Sunday Karimi.

Bello and Karimi were cleared for the party’s senatorial primary scheduled for Monday.

The committee approved 17 aspirants across the state’s three senatorial districts for the primaries.

Bello, whose eligibility had been the subject of speculation in recent days, was officially confirmed after his name appeared as number 13 on the list of cleared aspirants for the Kogi Central Senatorial District race.

The former governor is expected to battle Momoh Yusuf Obaro and Ibrahim Yakubu Adoke for the Kogi Central ticket.

In Kogi West, incumbent Karimi emerged as the consensus candidate after a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by Governor Usman Ododo at the Government House in Lokoja.

Although six other aspirants, including former senator Smart Adeyemi and Aro Bamidele were also cleared by the committee, political observers believe Karimi remains the frontrunner following the consensus arrangement.

For Kogi East Senatorial District, seven aspirants were cleared to contest the APC primary. They include incumbent Senator Isah Echocho, Joseph Ameh and Murtala Ajaka.

BON Bread Meets Safety Standards, Says NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, producers of BON Bread, comply with all regulatory requirements following concerns over the product’s safety.

The clarification follows an April 13, 2026 post by a social media user asking why the bread supplied to her remained fresh for more than two months.

Although the complainant did not identify the bread brand involved, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited stated that the product in question was BON Bread and claimed the post was misleading.

In a statement on Sunday, NAFDAC’s Director General, Mojisola Adeyeye, said: “In view of the hue and cry over the internet and the perceived need for NAFDAC to avail the public with evidence-based scientific proof, the Agency immediately commenced investigation on the matter.”

Adeyeye stated that officials of NAFDAC’s Greater FCT Directorate carried out an further inspection of the company’s bakery facility in Abuja on April 20, 2026.

According to her, bread samples and related ingredients were collected from the production facility, while additional samples were purchased from the open market for laboratory analysis. It noted that findings from the investigation showed that the company, which began bread production in 2006, had consistently renewed its product licences without penalties or product recalls.

The agency also stated that laboratory analysis further revealed that calcium propionate, an approved preservative commonly used in bread production, was present within limits permitted under the Codex Alimentarius international food standards.

NAFDAC stated that all three BON Bread samples tested from both the factory and open market met required standards. It also confirmed that the bread samples did not contain prohibited or objectionable substances, including bromate and non-nutritive sweeteners.

“As a result of the foregoing, the public is hereby informed that the company is not in violation of any of the agency’s regulations,” NAFDAC stated.

It also noted that bread manufacturers are permitted to adopt preservation methods that extend shelf life, provided such practices comply with established international food safety standards.

Adeyeye further urged members of the public to report concerns about regulated products directly through NAFDAC offices nationwide or via its official electronic platforms, including its recently launched call centre, rather than resorting to social media.

This, she said, would enable complaints to be handled discreetly and investigated thoroughly.

Police arrest five suspected fraudsters in Yobe, recover counterfeit foreign currencies

The Yobe State Police Command said its operatives have arrested five suspected criminals for alleged involvement in organised crime, fraud and robbery.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, stated in a statement issued on Sunday that the breakthrough followed a complaint lodged on May 12, 2026, by a victim residing behind the New Prison Area in Potiskum.

According to the statement, the complainant reported that sometime in March 2026, the suspects conspired and fraudulently obtained the sum of forty-nine million and two hundred thousand naira (N49,200,000) from him under the false pretence of producing money for him.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that part of the money, amounting to four hundred and thirty thousand naira (N430,000.00), was transferred through an OPay account (No. 9012923687) bearing the name Badaru Alhassan Gadau, while the remaining balance was allegedly collected in cash.

“Further findings indicated that after collecting the money, the suspects failed to fulfill their promise and allegedly compelled the complainant to swear with the Holy Qur’an, threatening that he would die should he disclose the transaction to anyone”, the statement added.

It stated that upon receipt of the complaint, personnel of Yindiski Division, Potiskum, swiftly mobilised and, through intelligence-led and coordinated operations, arrested five suspects found in possession of large quantities of suspected counterfeit foreign currencies from different countries.

The suspects are Abdullahi Hassan, 40, of Dogo Nini Ward, Potiskum; Mohammed Badaru, 43, of Azare, Bauchi State; Yau Adamu Yellow, 25, of Dambam, Bauchi State; Adamu Umar Doctor, 35, of Dambam, Bauchi State; and Salisu Abdullahi, 25, of Sumaila, Kano State.

Recovered exhibits include suspected counterfeit West African CFA franc notes and Moroccan currency denominations, several mobile phones, white cloth materials, and calabash and ritual-related items.

Other items recovered include containers with unidentified substances, a backpack, and other suspected items believed to have been used in facilitating fraudulent activities and deceiving unsuspecting victims.

The command said the suspects had confessed to their involvement in the crime and were currently assisting investigators with useful information to aid the progress of the investigation.

The command added that all exhibits had been documented and were undergoing further forensic and investigative examinations.

The Commissioner of Police, Usman Jibrin Kanfani, commended the personnel for their professionalism and successful operation.

He directed a discreet and thorough investigation into the case and ordered intensified efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate and any criminal elements operating with similar motives.

Drone strike triggers fire near nuclear plant in UAE

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, have said that a drone strike triggered a fire near a nuclear power station in the emirate of Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

The Ministry of Defence stated this, stressing that the drone that targeted the facility was one of three that entered the country from the western border direction.

According to the ministry, the projectile struck an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra area.

“Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the attacks, and updates will be disclosed upon completion of the investigations,” the ministry said.

DAILY POST reports that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant began operations in 2020 and is 200 kilometres (120 miles) west of the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi, near the borders with Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

It provides up to a quarter of the oil-rich country’s electricity needs, the state-owned operator Emirates Nuclear Energy Company said in 2024.

EPL, UCL: Jack Wilshere picks trophy he wants Arsenal to win

Former Arsenal star, Jack Wilshere, has picked the trophy he wants the Gunners to win between the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal have just three fixtures remaining in both the Champions League and the Premier League this term.

Mikel Arteta’s side will win both trophies if they win their last three matches against Burnley, Crystal Palace, and Paris Saint-Germain – in both competitions.

But when asked to pick which trophy he would want his old club to win between the EPL and the UCL, Wilshere said, as quoted by Metro UK, “It is a tough question because Arsenal are now in a position where they can win both.

“I’d probably rather win the Premier League because growing up as a young person in this country, I watched the Premier League all my life, and to win it is a massive thing.

“Saying that, the Champions League is as well, but I’d say the Premier League for me.”
