Trump Committed To Defending Christians In Nigeria, U.S. Congressman Says

United States Congressman Riley Moore has praised President Donald Trump for what he described as a strong commitment to protecting Christian communities in Nigeria, following a joint U.S.–Nigerian operation that killed Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, identified as ISIS’ second-in-command globally.

In a statement posted on X, Moore said President Trump was “laser focused on defending our Christian brothers and sisters in Nigeria against the slaughter and martyrdom they’ve faced at the hands of radical Islamic terrorists,” adding that the strike sends “a clear message” that those targeting innocent Christians “will be hunted down and brought to justice.”

The joint operation targeted al-Minuki’s compound in the Lake Chad Basin region of northeastern Nigeria, an area affected by repeated insurgent attacks linked to extremist groups. He was killed along with several of his lieutenants.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump both confirmed the success of the mission. Both U.S. Africa Command and the Nigerian military confirmed no casualties on either side.

Saturday’s strike followed months of pressure from Moore urging the Trump administration to take stronger action over attacks against Christians in Nigeria.

Just days before the operation, he had called on the administration to take what he described as “forceful action” following fresh attacks in the Middle Belt region, particularly in Plateau State, accusing the Nigerian government of failing to act on early warnings ahead of the attacks.

In February, he submitted a report proposing a bilateral U.S.–Nigeria security agreement, sanctions against those he described as violators of religious rights, and a broader counterterrorism framework.

He had earlier written to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urging immediate action over what he described as systematic attacks on Christians in parts of Nigeria, which he called “the deadliest place in the world to be a Christian.”

  • Why I left PDP for APM – Lagos governorship candidate, Adeoye

Why I left PDP for APM – Lagos governorship candidate, Adeoye

The governorship candidate of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, for the 2027 Lagos State election, Laja Adeoye, has explained his decision to exit the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, attributing the move to internal party disputes and a renewed focus on governance-driven priorities.

He spoke on Sunday in Lagos at the official unveiling of the Lagos Agenda 2027, tagged Atunto Eko 1.0, where he also presented key elements of his campaign blueprint.

According to him, the decision to join the APM was informed by the need to operate from a more stable and purpose-driven platform capable of delivering meaningful governance outcomes.

“My decision was driven by internal crises within the PDP and a desire to focus on governance issues,” he said.

Adeoye added that prolonged legal and leadership disagreements within the PDP had made it difficult to concentrate on addressing the pressing needs of Lagos residents.

“The lingering legal and leadership tussles within the PDP made it impossible to focus on the real issues facing Lagosians. My love for this state and my desire to deliver real change necessitated this principled switch. APM is not just another party; it is a government-in-waiting, a movement built on integrity, competence, and people-centred leadership,” he stated.

He argued that such internal conflicts could create uncertainty over candidate legitimacy and party stability, which may affect preparations for future elections supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The APM candidate also used the occasion to position his new platform as a more stable alternative, emphasizing governance priorities such as youth empowerment, job creation, and economic inclusion.

He stressed that his entry into the APM was not motivated solely by political ambition but by what he described as a commitment to practical solutions for the state’s development challenges.

Adeoye said Lagos required urgent attention in critical sectors, including power supply, transportation, healthcare, and urban development, adding that his campaign would prioritise measurable outcomes over political rhetoric.

He further outlined his infrastructure agenda, which includes independent power initiatives, expansion of renewable energy projects, affordable housing schemes, and flood control systems aimed at strengthening urban resilience.

He also pledged that his administration would focus on social welfare and inclusive governance, ensuring equitable development across all communities in the state.

Adeoye noted that Lagos has maintained a unique democratic trajectory since 1999, adding that the state, built around the five historic IBILE divisions of Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos (Eko), and Epe, has largely remained under the control of a single political party.

  • Long-time lawmaker Sa’idu Yusuf Miga loses return ticket in Jigawa APC primary

Long-time lawmaker Sa’idu Yusuf Miga loses return ticket in Jigawa APC primary

A major political upset has emerged in Jigawa State following the defeat of long-time federal lawmaker Hon. Sa’idu Yusuf Miga in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Miga, who represents the Jahun/Miga Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, lost the party’s return ticket during the APC primaries conducted on Saturday, bringing an end to his nearly two-decade presence in the National Assembly.

The lawmaker first entered the House of Representatives in 2003 under the platform of the defunct New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) before joining the APC during the 2014 merger that led to the formation of the ruling party.

He subsequently secured re-election in 2015, 2019, and 2023, making him one of the longest-serving lawmakers from Jigawa State.

However, reports of growing dissatisfaction among constituents over alleged poor representation and a lack of impactful constituency projects weakened his political standing in Jahun and Miga local government areas.

Critics also questioned his legislative performance, alleging that he had not sponsored major bills since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June 2023.

Public frustration became more pronounced earlier this month when a coalition of youths under the banner “Jahun Ina Muka Dosa” staged a peaceful protest demanding his replacement.

The group, led by youth leaders including Shamsu Sulaiman Alafin, Nura Wada, and Comrade Muhammad Khamisu Harbo, submitted complaints to the APC leadership and Governor Umar Namadi, accusing the lawmaker of failing to address infrastructural challenges, youth unemployment, and underdevelopment in the constituency.

“We need a more active and result-oriented representative who understands the needs of the people,” one of the youth leaders said during the protest.

Following the primary election, the APC replaced Miga with Hon. Umar Imam, who will now fly the party’s flag for the Jahun/Miga Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 elections.
