175 terrorists dead as joint Nigeria-US operations continue in North-East

The Nigerian military says ongoing joint counter-insurgency operations conducted with the United States Africa Command have eliminated 175 ISIS terrorists in North-East Nigeria.

Military authorities disclosed this in an operational update, saying the coordinated air and ground strikes commenced a few days ago as part of intensified efforts to dismantle terrorist networks operating within the region.

According to the military, the operations targeted terrorist enclaves, checkpoints, weapons caches, logistics hubs and financial structures sustaining insurgent activities across parts of the North-East.

The authorities said the operations also led to the elimination of several senior commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, including Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described as one of the most significant ISIS operatives globally.

The military, according to a report a security expert, Zagazola Makama noted that Al-Minuki played a major role in coordinating terrorist financing, recruitment, logistics and attack planning linked to ISIS operations targeting Nigeria and other regions.

Other terrorist leaders reportedly neutralised during the operations included Abd-al Wahhab, identified as an ISWAP commander involved in coordinating attacks and propaganda activities, Abu Musa al-Mangawi, another senior ISWAP member, and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir, said to be a senior media production manager and close associate of Al-Minuki.

The military high command said the death of the commanders had significantly disrupted ISIS operational coordination and external attack networks.

  • Yobe Security Council warns politicians against thuggery ahead of 2027 elections

Yobe Security Council warns politicians against thuggery ahead of 2027 elections

Yobe State Security Council, through the State Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, has issued a stern warning to politicians against thuggery and brigandage as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

The CP issued the warning while briefing journalists in Damaturu on the outcome of the State Security Council meeting held on Tuesday.

“On the general security of the state, we have to sound a word of warning as two APC primaries have already been conducted; that is, for the House of Representatives and Senate and were done peacefully”, he said.

According to him, Yobe State is one of the frontline states; hence, any act that could encourage lawlessness could take another dimension, warning that security agencies would not tolerate such behaviour.

“Thuggery and brigandage will not be tolerated from anyone. Rules and regulations are in place, and if anyone feels they have been politically shortchanged, there are established means and ways to address it”, CP Jibrin said.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Yobe State Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (retd), has urged residents to report suspicious persons to security agencies following sustained military operations against insurgents.

He made the appeal at the media briefing on the outcome of Tuesday’s security meeting.

“If you’ve noticed, military aircraft have been flying across the entire state. That is to let you know that special military operations are ongoing. Displaced insurgents are infiltrating towns and villages after being displaced from their enclaves.

“We, therefore, urge the general public to be on the lookout for strange faces and new arrivals, and to report them to the relevant security agencies”, he said.
