Transfer: Enzo Fernandes keen to leave Chelsea, join Cucurella at Real Madrid

Chelsea vice-captain, Enzo Fernandez, is keen to leave the club and sign for Real Madrid this summer.

The Blues have already seen Marc Cucurella leave Stamford Bridge to join the LaLiga giants.

But it appears they might be losing another player to Madrid ahead of the new season.

GiveMeSport journalist, Ben Jacobs, wrote on X: “Enzo Fernandez is keen to join Marc Cucurella at Real Madrid, and has made no secret of wanting to leave Chelsea.

“Chelsea’s asking price remains £120m, as revealed last month. Club calm about the situation, but will sell at the right price.

“Real Madrid are currently deciding on the type of midfield profile they want.

“Mateus Fernandes and Rodri two other names discussed.”

Protection of lives must take precedence over politics, elections – El-Buba charges Nigerian govt

The Founder of Evangelical Bible Outreach Ministry International (EBOMI), Prophet Isa El-Buba has charged the federal government to come up with urgent action that will end the wave of killings, kidnappings and insecurity across Nigeria.

The cleric specifically demanded that protection of the lives of Nigeria’s citizens must take precedence over politics and elections.

He spoke on Sunday in Jos, Plateau State during the “Black Sunday observance” declared by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The cleric lamented the continued loss of innocent lives and the suffering of families affected by violence in different parts of the country despite the repeated promises by the government to arrest the unpleasant situation.

He said Nigeria’s democratic journey would remain incomplete if citizens could not live safely in their own ancestral communities, stressing that democracy must guarantee security, justice, equal opportunities, and hope for future generations.

At the Black Sunday observance attended by Christians, Muslims, traditional leaders, public servants and political leaders, the cleric described the nation’s current situation as a critical moment that demands collective action and national reflection.

“Too many innocent lives have been lost. Too many communities have been displaced. Too many parents live with uncertainties about the future of their children,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to unite in condemning the persistent violence, declaring, “The bloodshed in Nigeria must stop. Every life matters. Every citizen deserves protection and every community deserves peace.”

The religious leader emphasized that security should be the nation’s top priority, insisting that political interests and electioneering should not take precedence over the safety of citizens.

“Before politics, before elections, before personal interests, we must secure the lives of Nigerians. No security, no election,” he declared.

He called on all levels of government and security agencies to intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks, secure vulnerable communities, and restore public confidence in the country’s security architecture.

Beyond security concerns, El-Buba said Nigeria’s challenges were also moral and spiritual, blaming corruption, greed, injustice, dishonesty, and abuse of power for weakening the nation’s foundations.

He urged the Church to reclaim its prophetic role and become a voice of conscience and transformation.

The cleric enjoined Muslims and other stakeholders to speak against those using religion to justify violence, adding that insecurity, poverty, and criminality affect all Nigerians regardless of tribe or faith.

In a direct message to President Bola Tinubu, El-Buba called for stronger leadership in addressing insecurity and demanded decisive action to rescue victims held by kidnappers.

He warned that citizens would continue to demand accountability from leaders, adding, “We will not keep silent, we will not keep quiet, until our nation is recovered.”

Wage Award: Civil Servants Seek Outstanding Payment Of Arrears

Many federal civil servants have urged the Federal Government to pay the outstanding two months’ arrears of wage award.

According to them, the money is needed to cushion the effect of the economic hardship.
The civil servants spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr Tunde Akanji said the Federal Government should consider the harsh economic conditions in the country and offset the arrears.

He urged the Federal Government to take all necessary steps to clear the outstanding two months’ arrears of the wage award.

Mrs Janet Osas urged the Federal Government to pay up the arrears without further delay, adding that the wage award would give the workers some relief.

Osas said the government should realise that the present minimum wage of N70,000 was unrealistic.

Mr Tom Ikwe said there was a need to pay the outstanding of two months, totaling N70,000, before the next salary.

Ikwe also called on the Federal Government to review the minimum wage and also make the N35,000 wage award a permanent addition to the monthly salaries for civil servants.

According to him, the government should consider the present economic realities and make the wage award a permanent addition to the present salary.

The National Coordinator of the Youth Rights Campaign, Mr Michael Lenin, frowned at the government’s failure to pay workers’ wages.
He said that the situation threatens the welfare and livelihood of ordinary Nigerians.

Lenin said it was unacceptable that employees could be denied their rightful earnings for months, while political office holders continued to receive substantial salaries and allowances.
“Politicians continue to receive millions and budget huge sums for themselves; it is ridiculous that government workers are being denied what is rightfully theirs for months,” he said.

Lenin called for the immediate payment of all outstanding wages owed to workers, stressing that the non-payment of arrears had worsened the economic hardship faced by many families.
He also said that the current wage levels were inadequate in the face of soaring inflation and the increasing cost of living across the country.

Lenin urged the Federal Government to implement a wage review that reflects current economic realities.
“We demand the immediate payment of these wages. We also believe that what workers receive today is far below what is needed to cope with the rate of inflation,” he said.

The youth activist further called for an upward review of workers’ salaries, insisting that remuneration should be adjusted to match the rising cost of living for them and their families.

NAN reports that the wage award was a temporary payment to workers, approved in 2023 to ease the burden of fuel subsidy removal.
The wage award was augmenting salaries while a new national minimum wage was being negotiated.

The Director, Press and Public Relations of the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation (OAGF), Mr Bawa Mokwa, assured workers that efforts were ongoing to resolve the issue.

He explained that the payments were traditionally approved by the relevant ministry after submissions were made by the responsible departments.

“They were paying it monthly, one month after another, but for some time now, there has been nothing.
“They have not said they will not pay. The issue is that they are working on it and they will pay,” he said.

Women protest over deplorable road in Delta

Not comfortable with the deplorable condition of their community road and the lack of critical infrastructure in the area, residents of Orhuwhorun community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State have staged a peaceful protest.

The protesters, mostly women, marched through the community carrying placards with inscriptions such as, “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Remember Orhuwhorun-Owhrode,” “Fix the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Access Road,” “The Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Road is Not Motorable,” and “Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Needs Government Attention.”

They called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently intervene in the poor state of the road, which, according to them, has subjected residents to severe hardship, increased transportation costs, and hindered economic and social activities within the surrounding communities.

Speaking during the protest, a High Chief from the community, Oghale Ighodakpo, emphasized that the protest was aimed solely at drawing the government’s attention to the plight of residents.

He said the prolonged neglect of the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Road has continued to inflict economic hardship on residents, traders and businesses operating within the area and neighbouring communities.

Ighodakpo urged the state government to prioritise the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the road, describing it as critical to the socio-economic development of the area.

The Vice Chairman of Orhuwhorun Community, Chief Cyril Onojeghuo, said the road has become a major obstacle to commerce and daily life, affecting traders, workers, students and motorists who depend on it for transportation.

The women leader in the community, Mrs Victoria Ashakpoke, described the condition of the road as unbearable, noting that residents pay exorbitant transport fares because many commercial drivers avoid the route due to its swampy and dilapidated condition.

According to her, the road serves as a critical link between Orhuwhorun, Owhrode and other surrounding communities, but years of neglect have made movement difficult for residents.

“The daily challenges we face in accessing neighbouring communities are painful. Due to the poor state of the road, we pay double transportation fares because no commercial transporter is willing to pass through the swampy road. Our economic activities, essential services and the overall well-being of our people are being affected,” she stated.
