UK: Train driver killed, 99 passengers injured in major rail collision

A train driver was killed and 99 passengers injured after two trains collided near Bedford in the United Kingdom, triggering what officials have described as one of the country’s most serious rail accidents in recent decades.

British Transport Police confirmed that nine passengers remained in critical condition, while three others suffered life-changing injuries. Thirty-two passengers sustained serious injuries and 56 suffered minor wounds.

The crash occurred when a passenger train travelling from Corby to London St Pancras collided with the rear of another service that had stopped on the tracks due to a reported safety fault.

Survivors recounted scenes of chaos and devastation, with several likening the aftermath to the site of a bomb blast.

One passenger, Brett Byatt, said most occupants of his carriage were injured during the collision.

“I’d probably say 90 per cent of the people on my carriage had injuries. Everyone else had either a serious wound that was bleeding profusely or a situation where they couldn’t stand or move,” he told news men.

Byatt stated that passengers were thrown violently from their seats following a loud impact.

Another survivor, Pete Knapp, described the scene as catastrophic.

“When I got up I saw people with bloodied faces and people’s legs looked broken, and there was smoke everywhere,” he said.

Teresa Itabor, who was travelling to London to celebrate her birthday, recalled hearing a massive bang moments after departing Bedford station.

“My head hit the seat in front of me. I didn’t know what was going on,” she said.

Simon Bentley, who was travelling with his wife, said they felt fortunate to have survived the crash.

“We’re very lucky and obviously very, very sad about what’s happened to the driver,” he said.

The deceased driver was operating the 4:40 p.m. Corby-to-London service, according to the train drivers’ union, ASLEF.

ASLEF General Secretary, Dave Calfe, said the tragedy had deeply affected railway workers across the country.

“The whole railway network will be feeling the sadness and sorrow of his death,” he said.

A spokesperson for Network Rail also expressed condolences to the driver’s family, friends and colleagues.

Meanwhile, King Charles III said he was “greatly saddened” by the incident, with Buckingham Palace extending sympathies to all those affected.

Authorities have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

Railway experts have suggested that investigators will examine whether signalling failures, human error or other technical faults contributed to the accident.

According to officials, the first train, a Nottingham-to-London service, had stopped after developing a safety-related fault and was running behind schedule when it was struck from behind by the second train shortly after leaving Bedford station.

Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said specialist investigators from the British Transport Police and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Images from the scene showed severe damage to one of the train cabs, while emergency responders treated casualties in nearby fields. Several critically injured passengers were airlifted to hospitals by helicopter.

The Bedford collision is being regarded as Britain’s most serious rail accident since the Grayrigg derailment, which claimed one life and injured dozens of passengers.

Report Alleges Bandits Undergoing Weapons Training In Sokoto

Fresh security concerns have emerged in eastern Sokoto State following reports that fighters loyal to notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, are allegedly conducting weapons training and tactical exercises in communities along the Sokoto-Zamfara border.

According to an intelligence report released by the Sokoto State Coordinator of the Movement for Social Justice and Good Governance, Basharu Altine, the activities are reportedly taking place in communities stretching from Bingabale Kudu through Bafarawa East to Bargaja.

Altine alleged that the fighters were undergoing military-style drills using newly acquired weapons and that some of Turji’s key associates, including Illa Manawa and Dodo, believed to be the bandit leader’s younger brother, were involved in the exercise.

“Our findings suggest that these fighters are currently engaged in weapons training and tactical exercises using newly acquired arms, including some of the same sophisticated weapons reportedly deployed during recent confrontations with security forces,” he said.

He further claimed that preliminary intelligence indicated the arrival of a fresh consignment of weapons and newly recruited fighters believed to have links with insurgent groups.

According to Altine, some of the new arrivals reportedly possess advanced combat and weapons-handling skills and were brought in to train and strengthen Turji’s fighters operating in border communities of Sokoto and Zamfara states.

He also alleged that intelligence gathered from Binchi suggested that night-vision devices recently acquired by Turji formed part of the equipment delivered to the group’s camps.

The report further linked two suspected bandit commanders, identified as Haru Dole and Ibrahim Chimo, to the alleged procurement and movement of the weapons.

Altine warned that the alleged collaboration could pose a significant threat to communities in eastern Sokoto, claiming that intelligence reports pointed to plans aimed at expanding the group’s influence in the region.

He called on security agencies to intensify surveillance and take proactive steps to verify the intelligence and prevent any potential threat to lives and property.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the allegations, and the claims contained in the intelligence report could not be independently verified.

Jeremy Doku To Miss Belgium’s World Cup Clash With Iran

Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has been ruled out of the Red Devils’ second World Cup group-stage match against Iran at SoFi Stadium due to illness.

Rudi Garcia’s side will face Iran on Sunday seeking their first victory of the tournament after opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Egypt, but they will have to do so without the Manchester City forward.

“Due to illness, Jeremy Doku will not be part of the squad for our upcoming game against Iran,” Belgium announced on social media.

Doku started against Egypt but struggled to impose himself and was replaced by Matias Fernandez-Pardo in the 86th minute.

The 24-year-old could also be unavailable for a potential knockout-stage fixture, with his wife expected to give birth to their first child during the second week of July.

Doku is regarded as one of the brightest talents in the Belgian squad, which is seeking to rebuild following the collapse of its celebrated “golden generation,” whose era ended with a group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.

W/Cup: Tunisia Crash Out As Minnows Curaçao Make History

Japan celebrated their 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tunisia to move closer to securing a place in the Round of 32.

Ayase Ueda scored twice, while Daichi Kamada and Junya Ito were also on target as the Asian giants joined the Netherlands on four points at the top of Group F.

Tunisia, who were hammered 5-1 by Sweden in their opening game, were eliminated from the tournament after suffering a second consecutive defeat.

The Blue Samurai, who held the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in their opening fixture, dominated proceedings at Monterrey Stadium from start to finish.

Elsewhere, World Cup debutants Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament, made history by holding Ecuador to a goalless draw and earning their first-ever World Cup point.

Scenes of jubilation erupted at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium as head coach Dick Advocaat was overcome with emotion and fans clad in Curaçao blue celebrated wildly in the stands.

Veteran goalkeeper Eloy Room emerged as the hero of the night, producing an astonishing 15 saves to deny Ecuador and preserve a famous clean sheet.

The 37-year-old’s display came within one save of matching the overall World Cup record set by former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard, who made 16 saves against Belgium at the 2014 tournament.

Speaking after the match, Room joked that his heroic performance deserved a permanent tribute.

“I think I need a statue in Curaçao now,” he said.

Although Howard still holds the overall record, his 16 saves came over 120 minutes, while Room’s feat set a new World Cup mark for the most saves in a regulation 90-minute match and the most saves in a clean sheet.

“A little bit annoyed that I don’t have the record from Tim Howard, but I think he was sweating in front of the TV because I was close,” Room added.

Among those present to witness the historic moment were Willem-Alexander and Máxima Zorreguieta.

The Dutch royals had earlier watched the Netherlands defeat Sweden before ending the day by seeing constituent nation Curaçao write a memorable chapter in World Cup history.

Some of my colleagues went broke after spending their money on parties, South African women – Spyro

Nigerian singer, Spyro has claimed that the reason some of his colleagues are financially bankrupt is due to extravagant spending on parties and foreign women, especially South Africans.

Addressing his fans midway into his performance at an event during the weekend, the ‘Who’s Your Guy’ hitmaker described extravagant spending on women and frivolities as wasted investments.

Spyro explained that it is okay to have fun and be generous to women but not extravagantly.

He urged his male fans to save and invest instead of spending on frivolities.

“If you are here and you are spending money on women I think you are wasting your time. I not saying you should not spend on your woman but use your head.

“I know some of my colleagues who went broke because they made their first bag and blew it off on parties and trips to South Africa. But I didn’t move that way and that is why I am where I am,” he said.

The singer claimed that immediately he became rich and famous many Instagram models reached out to him but he rejected even those who promised to sponsor their holidays in foreign cities and chose to focus on music and investment.
