2026 World Cup: Senegal ‘suffering from curse’ of AFCON winner

Senegal’s narrow 3-2 defeat to Norway in their second group fixture at the 2026 World Cup, leaves them on the brink of elimination.

The Teranga Lions won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against hosts Morocco, before they were controversially stripped of the title by CAF.

The case is currently at the Court of Arbitration.

However, historically, AFCON winners have found it difficult to translate their Nations Cup successes to the World Cup in the immediate aftermath of their continental glory.

In the past, only Nigeria (1994), Nigeria (2014) and Senegal (2022) have gone past the group stages while they were reigning African champions.

The winners in 1988, Cameroon, went all the way to the quarterfinals in 1990, but by then, they had been dethroned as African champions by Algeria.

In fact, it’s far more common for the reigning AFCON champions to fail to qualify for the competition, let alone flop in the group stage, with success in the continent rarely a guarantee of an impressive World Cup campaign.

Senegal, however, still stand a chance of crawling into the Round of 32, as the eight best third-placed teams can still progress to the knockouts.

But they would need a win against Iraq in their final group game.

2026 World Cup: Messi, Mbappe, Haaland battle for Golden Boot

After two matches each at the 2026 World Cup, it appears the battle for the Golden Boot will be between Lionel Messi (Argentina), Kylian Mbappe (France) and Erling Haaland (Norway).

The trio are the only players to score multiple goals in every match they have played so far.

Messi currently leads the way with five goals. The 39-year-old netted a hat-trick as the champions thrashed Algeria 3-0.

He followed it up with a record-breaking brace in the 2-0 win over Austria on Monday, taking his tally to five.

Mbappe is just behind with four goals, after scoring twice against both Senegal and Iraq.

The Real Madrid striker is now the fourth player to score two goals plus in at least three successive FIFA World Cup appearances, along with Sándor Kocsis in 1954 (run of four), Guillermo Stabile in 1930 and Messi in 2026.

Haaland also has four goals to his name, with braces against Iraq and Senegal.

Mbappe and Haaland are set to come up against each other in the final group game to decide who finishes first.

EFCC Re-arraigns Ex-Skye Bank Boss, Ayeni, Over N15.6b Fraud Case

The Ecoonomic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday re-arraigned the former Chairman, Board of Directors (BoD) of the defunct Skye Bank (now Polaris Bank), Tunde Ayeni, before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Apo, Abuja, over an alleged N15.6 billion fraud case.

Ayeni was re-arraigned on an amended 18-count charge bordering on alleged criminal breach of trust, misappropriation and diversion of funds, following the EFCC’s submission of additional evidence.

Prosecution counsel, Abba Muhammed (SAN), informed the court that the amended charge and additional evidence were filed on June 22, 2026.

Defence counsel, Abdul Mohammed (SAN), confirmed receipt of the documents.

The EFCC alleged that Ayeni, while serving as Chairman of Skye Bank’s BoD, had control over depositors’ funds and allegedly diverted various sums in breach of the bank’s operational policies.

He was first arraigned on May 4, 2026, on 17 counts.

  • Okowa spotted at EFCC Lagos office amid ongoing fraud probe

Okowa spotted at EFCC Lagos office amid ongoing fraud probe

Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, was reportedly sighted at the Lagos Directorate 1 office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi.
A senior source within the anti-graft agency disclosed that Okowa’s visit may be connected to the ongoing investigation into allegations of abuse of office and financial misconduct linked to his administration.
The former governor has been under investigation by the EFCC since leaving office over the alleged diversion of about N1.3 trillion from the 13 per cent derivation funds allocated to Delta State from the Federation Account between 2015 and 2023.
Okowa was initially arrested on November 4, 2024, and subsequently questioned at the commission’s Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate.
According to the source, the former governor visited the Lagos office in a bid to secure the release of his international passport to enable him travel abroad for what was described as urgent medical treatment.
However, it remained unclear at the time of filing this report whether the commission approved the request and returned the travel document.
Efforts to obtain an official response from the spokesperson of the EFCC, Mr Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful, as calls made to his telephone line were not answered.
