We’re rebuilding Abuja, restoring hope in governance – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that his administration was rebuilding the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to build trust and restore citizens hope and confidence in government.

Tinubu made the remarks in Abuja on Thursday, while inaugurating the newly constructed Interchange at the intersection between Arterial Road N16 with the Ring Road II, linking Jahi District to Gwarinpa District.

Represented by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President noted that “Abuja is changing.”

He said: “One interchange at a time, one road at a time, we are rebuilding trust and restoring hope. Together, we will build a country where every citizen can move freely, live safely, and prosper.

“This intersection used to choke Abuja. Gridlock stretched from Maitama to Gishiri, from Jahi to Gwarimpa. Hours were lost, fuel was wasted and businesses were delayed.

“Today, that story ends. This interchange opens up critical districts of the FCT and connects them smoothly to the rest of the territory.”

Tinubu described infrastructure as the foundation of prosperity and roads as the arteries of a nation saying, “when we connect districts, we connect destinies.

“That is the logic of the Renewed Hope Agenda: build the roads, unlock the economy, and let Nigerians thrive. The Jahi/Gwarimpa Interchange is proof that Nigeria is not beyond redemption”.

The President commended FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for making Abuja work again, pointing out that from roads to bridges, from city centre to satellite towns, the minister is domesticating renewed hope across the FCT.

“Nigerians can see it, critics can see it and residents feel it in their daily lives. Well done,” he said.

In his remarks, Wike said that the project was awarded, a few days before Tinubu was sworn into office, with no mobilisation. But to show leadership, you made funds available to continue the project awarded by your predecessors.

“Mr President, you have shown that government is continuum. It doesn’t matter who awarded the project. What is important is to complete the project for the betterment and the development of society.

“This is what differentiated the current government and the previous administrations.

“Thank you Mr President for giving us the opportunity to be part of history in changing the narrative as far as the development of Abuja is concerned.”

Reacting to the claim by the African Democratic Congress, alleging that Tinubu government is building only roads while Nigerians are hungry, the minister described the assertion as misleading.

He recalled that just two days ago, Mr President inaugurated the Karu Water Supply Network, adding that another water network would be inaugurated in Bwari in July.

“Let me say that it is not correct that we are only doing roads. It is not correct,” he said.

He, nonetheless, thanked the ADC for acknowledging the road infrastructural stride in the FCT and other parts of the country.

On her part, FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud said that beyond traffic management, the interchange serves as a critical link connecting communities, businesses, and opportunities across Abuja.

Mahmoud said that the completed interchange would significantly reduce travel time, improve access to commercial centres, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and support the growing demands of the FCT’s expanding population.

Earlier, Mr Richard Dauda, acting Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, said that the project was awarded in May 2023 for the full-scope development of Arterial Road N16 from Ring Road II to Ring Road III with two interchanges.

Dauda said that one of the Interchanges was at the intersection between Arterial Road N16 and Ring Road II, which was being inaugurated.

“The Arterial Road N16 is being developed in stages, with the Phase I section completed, that is the Maitama section. The Katampe section, which is the Phase II section, was also completed up to Wole Soyinka Way (Arterial N20) and inaugurated.

“The Jahi District section is still under construction, while the Phase III section, which is the project we are in now, has attained significant progress with the completion of this interchange,” he said.

He said that the rest of the project up to Ring Road III, a total length of 7.25 kilometres in length, would be completed in due course.

UNIOSUN shuts Ifetedo campus over student’s death

The management of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has announced the indefinite closure of its Ifetedo Campus following the death of a 400-level student of Criminology and Security Studies, Miss Grace Osunlakin.

The university disclosed the decision in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji.

In the statement, the university described the incident as a tragic loss that had deeply affected the institution and its community.

According to the statement, “Osunlakin reportedly died on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, prompting the university authorities to review the situation and take immediate measures aimed at maintaining calm on the campus.”

The management expressed profound sadness over the student’s demise and extended condolences to her family, fellow students and all stakeholders impacted by the incident.

“The University Management extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the student community, and all stakeholders affected by this unfortunate incident,” the statement said.

It explained that the decision to close the campus indefinitely followed careful consideration of the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and the need to allow emotions among students to subside.

The university stated that the temporary closure would also provide an opportunity for a comprehensive assessment of healthcare facilities, medical personnel and water supply systems within the Ifetedo Campus.

According to the management, “the review forms part of broader efforts to address longstanding challenges associated with the campus and improve conditions for students and staff”.

The statement noted that the institution remained committed to ensuring the safety, welfare and well-being of members of the university community.

The university assured the public that a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the incident would be conducted, while appropriate measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence.

“May Almighty God grant the family of the deceased, the students, and the entire University community the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement added.

The management appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with the institution as efforts continue to address the issues identified and restore normal academic activities at the campus.

Chairman, secretary removed as leadership tussle rocks Eyean cattle dealers association

The leadership crisis rocking the Eyean Cattle Dealers Association, Benin City, Edo State, has taken a new dimension as members removed Idris Adano as the Board of Trustees, BOT, chairman of the body over alleged N116 million financial impropriety.

The members also removed the secretary of the BOT, Awall Shafie.

DAILY POST reports that the Board of Trustees elected Jidda Tahir and Ibrahim Shariff as chairman and secretary, respectively.

Adano and Shafie were reported to have been removed on April 25, 2026 at the BOT general meeting at the body’s office in Benin City.

At the meeting, five out of the seven-man BOT voted to remove Adano and Shafie over allegations of their unavailability to attend to issues pertaining to the association and financial impropriety of about N116 million.

They were also accused of non-payment of about N35 million for the clearing of refuse within the market.

Speaking on his removal, Adano, described the allegations as a deliberate attempt by mischievous individuals to sow disunity, instigate confusion and cause instability within the association.

In a statement personally signed by him and one Adam Gombe, he alleged that the entire membership of the association has passed an overwhelming vote of confidence in him.

The statement opined that the vote of confidence was due to Adano’s dedication, transparency and exemplary leadership in piloting the affairs of the association towards greater heights.

“We reaffirm our unalloyed loyalty and commitment to his leadership and vision. We strongly urge all members, stakeholders, the general public, and relevant security agencies to completely  disregard such unfounded claims and continue to extend their cooperation to the established leadership.

“The Eyean Cattle Dealers Association remains committed to its core mandate of fostering a conducive business environment for the cattle trade, ensuring market stability, promoting peace, and contributing positively to the economic development of Edo State and Nigeria,” the statement said.

Reacting, Ejiga Paul Enemona, counsel to the association, said the removal of the former chairman and secretary was in line with the union’s constitution.

Enemona, who spoke to newsmen in Benin City, added that if the removed chairman and the secretary continue parading themselves as executive members of the union, the present executive would not hesitate to drag them to security agencies

“In this association, they have seven Board of Trustees members and five of them voted against him. Five against two which is more than two thirds. The body has also applied to the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, to apply for the removal

“The former chairman, Idris Adano, and others started the business together, and they discovered that Idris was not faithful.  He does not give accounts of the money that was coming to the association to the point that the people discovered that the sum of N116,658 million has been embezzled by the former chairman.

“He also within the same period  stopped calling for meetings. The other five members were not carried along. Only himself and the secretary were doing all that they were doing. In the course of doing so, the people say, no, we can’t continue like this. There are other things that form the allegation or the reason why he was removed.

“The market  has been left so unkept. What he claimed he was doing, he was not doing. One of my  colleagues here in Benin City by name Barrister Dele Edokpayi, has a company that went to clear the market there. And after they have done all those things, he took money from the association that he was going to pay him.

“He refused to pay.  As I speak, Barrister Dele Edokpayi has not received a dime from him. The money that was released to be paid to him, according to them, is N35 million. That was done and that was part of why he was removed,” Enemona stated.

‘We killed her to teach her a lesson’ – Suspected killers of Ogun broadcaster

Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested three suspects connected to the killing of retired OGTV broadcaster, Kitan Oyesiku, popularly known as Aunty Kitan.

Oyesiku was murdered in cold blood alongside her 38-year-old security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, at her residence

in the Kobape area of Abeokuta last Saturday.

The Ogun police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that the corpse of the security guard was discovered within the security post, while the lifeless body of Oyesiku was found face up inside her apartment.

He stated that her vehicle, which was also discovered missing, was eventually recovered in the state.

Barely five days after her death, the police have announced the arrest of the suspects – Sodeinde Olajuwon Phillip, 22, Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, 27, and Sobu Obafunsho, 36.

Sodeinde, the principal suspect, who was a former security guard to the deceased, was said to have recruited the others to join him in carrying out the heinous crime.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, while parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Thursday, stated that in the course of investigation it was discovered that Sodeinde have always contacted the deceased, demanding for money even when he was no longer worked for her.

The CP disclosed that the missing vehicle was recovered close to Sodeinde’s residence and he was arrested at a construction site in GRA Ibara where he worked as a labourer.

The police chief stated that on interrogation, Sodeinde confessed to killing the deceased just to “teach her a lesson”, adding that the attack following grievances he has been holding against with the deceased during the period he worked as a security guard in her employment.

The CP said, “The Command launched intensive investigation, intelligence gathering, and technical tracking operations aimed at identifying those responsible and recovering the missing vehicle.

“Acting on credible intelligence and technical tracking analysis, operatives of the Command successfully traced and recovered the missing Lexus RX 330 vehicle belonging to the deceased on 22nd June, 2026. Although the ignition key had been removed and the registration number plates detached from the vehicle, detectives recovered the vehicle’s registration plate concealed underneath one of the seats, which enabled investigators to positively identify and confirm the vehicle as the property of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku.

“One critical piece of evidence recovered from the scene was a handwritten note apparently left behind by the perpetrators. The note was subjected to forensic examination and analysis, which generated valuable investigative leads that significantly aided detectives in identifying and tracing those responsible for the crime.

“Further intelligence gathering and painstaking investigation led to the identification and arrest of the principal suspect, Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip ‘m’ aged 22 years, on 24th June, 2026, at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, where he was working as a labourer.

“Further follow-up operations by detectives of the Command led to the successful arrest of Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola ‘m’ aged 27 years, a security guard, and Sobu Obafunsho ‘m’ aged 36 years, a bricklayer, thereby bringing into custody all identified suspects directly linked to the criminal conspiracy.

“The suspect stated that the murder of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku was intended to teach her a lesson.”

According to the commissioner, the suspects first overpowered the security guard, used him to gain access to the residence and upon gaining entry, they attacked Oyesiku and subsequently murdered the security guard.

Items recovered after searches at locations linked to the suspects include a broken hammer, a cutlass, a plank, a black pen and other relevant exhibits connected to the investigation.

The CP emphasized  that while the suspects have made useful statements and substantial evidence has been recovered in the course of the investigation, all suspects remain entitled to due process under the law.

He noted that investigation is ongoing to consolidate all available evidence and ensure diligent prosecution of all suspects connected with the crime.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, Wale Olarewaju, thanked the CP for unraveling circumstances surrounding the broadcaster’s death.
