Nigerian govt ‘orders’ FUTO VC to immediately withdraw 24 aides’ appointments

The Nigerian government has reportedly ordered the vice chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, to immediately withdraw his appointment of twenty-four aides.

This contained a leaked directive dated June 25th, 2026, allegedly signed by Kareem O. L., acting director of university education on behalf of the minister of education.

The government in the purported directive cited alleged breaches of due process as the reason for the directive.

Recall that Prof. Dozie assumed office on June 19th, 2026, as the 9th VC of FUTO Owerri.

Thereafter, a report emerged that the VC appointed 24 aides.

Reacting to the alleged leaked correspondence, the ministry faulted the appointments and directed the vice-chancellor to reverse them “forthwith” and provide evidence of compliance without delay.

The government reportedly described the appointments as irregular and inconsistent with regulations governing Nigeria’s federal universities.

“At variance with the extant regulations, established procedures, and the principles of due process governing appointments within the Federal University System.”

Beyond the order to cancel the appointments, the leaked letter also summoned the vice-chancellor to Abuja for an urgent meeting with officials of the Ministry on June 29.

A copy of the communication was also forwarded to the National Universities Commission (NUC), a move experts say underscores the seriousness of the matter and the potential implications for university governance.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the management of FUTO nor officials of the Federal Ministry of Education had publicly commented on the leaked directive.

Nigeria, Netherlands secure fresh trade deal

Nigeria and Netherlands have secured a fresh trade facilitation deal.

This comes as Nigeria Customs and its counterpart in the Kingdom of the Netherlands agreed to facilitate trade, boost border security, build capacity, and fight against transnational organised crime.

In a statement by customs’ spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, the collaboration was reached on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, in Brussels by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Director-General of Netherlands Customs, Mrs Nanette van Schelven.

Adeniyi, in his comment, said that the Netherlands’ customs have demonstrated the immense value of international cooperation in addressing emerging trade and border management challenges. He added that the partnership will strengthen intelligence sharing, enhance capacity building, improve enforcement effectiveness, and support the collective efforts to secure international supply chains while facilitating legitimate trade.

CGC described the declaration as a significant milestone in the service’s international cooperation agenda and a reflection of the strong relationship established between the two customs administrations over the past years.

On her part, the director-general of Netherlands Customs, Mrs Nanette Van Schelven, stated that both administrations face similar challenges in an increasingly interconnected global trading environment.

She noted that closer collaboration would promote mutual learning, strengthen operational capabilities, and improve efforts to tackle transnational organised crime while supporting efficient and transparent trade processes.

Alleged fraud: Peter Obi officially serves Kenneth Okonkwo

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Mr Peter Obi, has officially served a writ of summons on actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo in a defamation suit filed at the High Court of Anambra State, Onitsha Judicial Division.

According to court documents dated June 25, 2026, Obi is seeking N8 billion in damages over statements allegedly made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on June 8, 2026, and subsequently circulated on social media platforms.

The legal action is being pursued on Obi’s behalf by Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN) of Alex Ejesieme, SAN & Co. (Madiba Chambers), Awka, Anambra State.

DAILY POST reports that case stems from a growing dispute between the two former political allies, who have recently exchanged criticisms over political developments and leadership issues within the opposition movement.

The writ, issued by the court and marked for service outside Anambra State in neighbouring Enugu State, directs Okonkwo to enter an appearance within 42 days of being served or risk judgment being entered against him in his absence.

In the suit, Obi contends that comments made by Okonkwo during the television interview, which was later uploaded to Channels Television’s YouTube platform and amplified through his verified social media accounts, were false, malicious and defamatory.

The former Anambra State governor is claiming N5 billion as general damages for alleged injury to his reputation, character, integrity, public image, political standing and goodwill.

He is also seeking N2 billion as aggravated damages, citing what he described as the breadth, persistence and repetition of the alleged defamatory statements, including publications made after his lawyers issued a demand letter dated June 9, 2026.

In addition, Obi is asking the court to award N1 billion in exemplary damages, arguing that the defendant deliberately repeated and amplified the allegations despite being notified of his complaint.

Beyond monetary compensation, the plaintiff is seeking several court orders, including a directive compelling Okonkwo to publish a full retraction and apology on Channels Television, its YouTube platform, his social media accounts and in three national newspapers.

Obi is also requesting an order directing the defendant to remove all publications containing the disputed allegations from platforms under his control and a perpetual injunction restraining him from making similar allegations in the future.

The suit further seeks post-judgment interest on any monetary award granted by the court, as well as the costs of the action.

  • Tinubu Will Win 2027 Easier Than 2023, Says Sowunmi

Tinubu Will Win 2027 Easier Than 2023, Says Sowunmi

Former Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign spokesman, Segun Sowunmi, has said it would be difficult for any opposition candidate to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the president remains politically dominant despite growing criticism of his administration.

Speaking during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Thursday, Sowunmi said Tinubu had moved from being a candidate whose victory depended largely on his own performance to one who now enjoys a significant advantage because of the weaknesses within the opposition.

“Before now, it was his election to lose. But right now, it will be magical for anybody to easily beat him. The opposition has not shown that it has the unity, structure and strength required to take him on.”

He argued that while many opposition politicians continue to criticise the government, they have failed to demonstrate the level of organisation.

“The opposition today is not showing enough seriousness. You can’t just gather people together and assume that because you are angry with the government, Nigerians will automatically hand over power to you.”

The PDP chieftain maintained that elections in Nigeria are won through political structure. “The elections are residual decision-making events. It’s also a science. And there’s a science of numbers. There’s a science of money. There’s a science of the science itself. And there’s a science of outcome based on predictability

He also questioned the readiness of newer political platforms to compete effectively in a national election. “When you are a frequent joiner, in an election that requires you to be able to easily identify a platform, recognise symbols, and make commitments at grassroots up to whatever numbers you’re expecting, you’ll see where the challenge of Peter Obi’s efforts are.”

Sowunmi argued that President Tinubu currently enjoys significant political advantages due to the strength of the APC’s structures nationwide.

“The fact of the matter is that the President is sitting really pretty. Political machinery is well-armed. You can see that almost all their structures are beginning to fire on, and I can imagine that by the time they blow the whistle, it will almost be like a hurricane sweeping people.”

He predicted that Tinubu would not only win re-election but could also help secure victories for APC candidates across the country. “So my bet right now is that the President will win it, and more than likely, he will be able to pull a lot of his governors across the line, and he will also most likely get majority Senate and majority Rep.”

Sowunmi blamed the current state of Nigeria’s political landscape on what he described as the failure to build durable political parties that can survive beyond individual ambitions. “We found ourselves here because we did not really quickly understand that democratic parties must be built to last, and that the stability of political parties cannot be built around the ambition of individuals.”

“What we have done now, from what we can see, is that almost all the parties have become fiefdoms of one individual.”

Responding to concerns about calls for Tinubu’s resignation over the economy and insecurity, Sowunmi said public dissatisfaction does not necessarily translate into electoral defeat.

“No president is popular all through his tenure. There will always be those polls you do to say what is the approval rating today? Today is high, tomorrow is low, tomorrow is high, tomorrow is low.”

He maintained that incumbency provides opportunities for governments to showcase achievements during election campaigns.

“Political parties are naturally going to start marketing what they’ve done, especially incumbents. And they will have the privilege of showing roads, some of the things they’ve done.”

Sowunmi pointed to the Federal Capital Territory as an example of ongoing government projects that could become campaign assets.

“If you look at the FCT for instance now, how do you tell anybody that they are not working there? That’s almost too late. They’ve been up for 22 days only to do projects. Those projects are not in the sky, they are on land.”

Drawing comparisons with the 2015 election that removed the PDP from power, he said opposition parties succeeded then because they built a united coalition behind a common objective.

“What we saw was that they put two big parties, ACN and CPC, with two big gladiators, Bola Tinubu and Muhammadu Buhari of blessed memory. They joined them together.”

He contrasted that strategy with the current opposition landscape. “Those who are supposed to have created a coalition of an opposition, they couldn’t even agree to do primaries. And by the time they got to consensus, almost everybody had voted out.”

Sowunmi described Tinubu as one of Nigeria’s most experienced political operators and suggested that his understanding of party organisation gives him an advantage over rivals.

“By every stretch of imagination, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is probably the very first real politician that is sitting in the office of president.”

“So what do they know that he doesn’t know?”
He further predicted that Tinubu would improve on his 2023 electoral performance in several regions of the country, including the South-East, South-South, North-Central and North-West.
“The president is going to win good numbers in the south-south. And he’s going to win a significantly better number in the southeast.”
“The president is going to do very well in the north-central.”
“The president is going to do significantly better than he did the last time in the northwest.”
Sowunmi estimated that Tinubu could secure as many as 22 states if current political trends continue.
“If he works very hard, he could do with 22 states.”
Despite acknowledging that politics can be unpredictable, he said his assessment remains that Tinubu is currently in a commanding position. “24 hours is a very long time. Anything can happen.”
“Well, I may be wrong, but I think the president will win this election easier than he won the last one.”
On the judiciary, Sowunmi warned that public confidence in the courts must be protected if Nigeria’s democracy is to remain stable.
“Any society that loses the integrity of its judiciary is just a society waiting to implode.”
“It’s not enough for them to do justice. They must do justice, justice must be seen to be done.”

Court commits House of Reps member, Ogah to Kuje prison over alleged criminal defamation

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has committed a member of the House of Representatives, Amobi Godwin Ogar, to Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja, over allegations bordering on criminal defamation and false declaration.

Justice Yusuf Halilu issued the committal order shortly after the federal lawmaker representing Abia State was arrested and brought before the court.

According to the committal order, dated June 24 and sighted by our correspondent on Thursday, the federal legislator will remain in custody until July 6, when the case is scheduled to resume.

The court document, titled Warrant of Commitment to Prison, indicated that the federal lawmaker is standing trial in Charge No. CR/650/2024. It reads in part:

“The Officer in Charge of the prison at Kuje, whereas the above-named person has been arrested and brought before me, accused of the offences of criminal defamation and false declaration, you are hereby authorised and required to receive him and detain him in custody until further order; provided that, if no further order has been made as to his disposal before July 6, 2026, you shall deliver him to a police officer to bring him before me with this warrant for an order as to his disposal.”

It will be recalled that the federal government, on July 31, 2024, filed a five-count criminal charge against the Abia lawmaker bordering on alleged criminal defamation and false declaration.

In count one, the lawmaker was alleged to have, sometime in May 2023, made a false declaration in an affidavit at the registry of the FCT High Court, Abuja, dated May 18, 2023, against Hon. Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha, then Minister of State for Labour and Employment, in which he allegedly claimed that, during a meeting with her supporters at her residence, she told them she had “bought over” the tribunal judges, particularly Hon. Justice Halima Saleeman. The charge stated that he knew the allegation was false, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 164 of the Penal Code, Cap. 89, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1963, punishable under Section 158(2) of the same Act.

In count two, he was accused of making another false and defamatory declaration in the same affidavit dated May 18, 2023, alleging that the former minister had influenced the removal of the former chairman of the panel, Hon. Justice Halilu, to pave the way for Hon. Justice Halima Saleeman, whom she allegedly knew personally and who would deliver judgment in her favour. The prosecution alleged that the statement was false and constituted an offence contrary to Section 391 of the Penal Code, Cap. 89, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1963, punishable under Section 392 of the same Act.

Count five reads: “That you, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, male, 44 years, a member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, sometime in May 2023, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court in the FCT, Abuja, committed an offence by making a false declaration against Hon. Nkeiruka Chidubem Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Federal Republic of Nigeria, with intent to destroy her reputation, as a result of which she suffered harm to her reputation, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 393 of the Penal Code, Cap. 89, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1963, and punishable under the same section of the Act.”
