Save me from eviction in my house, Abia widow begs Governor Otti’s wife

A 62-year-old widow, Mrs Nkechinyere Ndukwe, has appealed to the wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti, to urgently intervene and save her from being evicted from her property.

Mrs Ndukwe who is a retired school Head Mistress, said some persons who are claiming ownership of her building at No.62 Mission Hill Umuahia, have removed the doors, windows, fence of the property and also planning to demolish the house.

The appeal is contained in a Save-my-Soul letter raised by the Human Rights Committee of Nigerian Bar Association NBA, Umuahia branch, on behalf of the widow and addressed to Mrs Otti.

In the letter, Mrs Ndukwe lamented that the same persons have been intimidating her to sign a document suggesting that she had sold the property to them, which she refused to sign.

Ndukwe, who explained that the house jointly belongs to her, her daughter and her son, regretted that the acclaimed buyers of the building are saying that they have purchased it from her son, even when she is not aware of such a transaction.

She said that she now lives in darkness without any form of protection as electric wires, doors, windows, fences and burglary proofs have completely been pulled down by the acclaimed buyers.

The NBA Umuahia branch of the Human Rights Committee appealed to the Abia Governor’s wife for urgent intervention on the matter.

ADC convention: 3,000 delegates storm Abuja amid venue controversy

No fewer than 3,000 delegates have converged in Abuja for the ongoing national convention of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that delegates came in vibrant and diverse attires, arriving from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Security was visibly tight at the venue, with personnel conducting thorough checks before granting access, as accreditation got underway under the supervision of the accreditation sub-committee led by Senator Austin Akobundu.

Speaking at the event, the National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, explained that delegate allocation was based on the size of each state to ensure fair representation during the convention.

However, Idigo raised concerns over difficulties the party encountered in securing a suitable venue, alleging that multiple private operators declined to host the ADC due to external pressure and intimidation.

According to him, requests to use Eagle Square and the Velodrome at the National Stadium were either ignored or rejected without explanation.

He added that several hotels and event centres also turned down the party upon learning of its involvement, citing fears of possible repercussions.

“Even the Rainbow Event Centre initially attempted to cancel after alleged threats, but we insisted on proceeding since payments had already been made,” Idigo said.

He further decried what he described as an environment where businesses are unable to operate freely, warning that such interference could lead to financial losses for private operators.

The convention is expected to conclude the party’s congresses, ratify a new constitution, and set the stage for upcoming primary elections.

As of 11am it was reported that No INEC officials was cited at the venue.

  • FG probes ‘sharp sharp’ loan operators over privacy violations

FG probes ‘sharp sharp’ loan operators over privacy violations

The Federal Government says it is investigating the activities of some ‘sharp sharp’ loan operators over alleged violation of data privacy of customers.

The National Commissioner, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Mr Vincent Olatunji, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

NAN reports that ‘Sharp Sharp’ loan operators, also known in some quarters as loan sharks, are private sector-based and largely unregulated loan vendors who advance immediate loans to soliciting, and sometimes, unsoliciting customers without collateral.

Olatunji, who spoke on the sidelines of the training for Data Protection Officers (DPOs) in Abuja, said the federal government was aware of some of the lenders breaching their customers’ data privacy in their desperate bid to recover their loans.

According to him, some of the violations include accessing borrowers’ phone contact lists and using them to reach their family members and friends as well as sharing images without consent and sending defamatory or threatening messages.

The national commissioner emphasised the need for increased public awareness, urging Nigerians to understand their rights and carefully review loan agreements before accepting offers.

Olatunji, however, said unethical data practices by loan operators remained a global concern.

“Many borrowers unknowingly expose their personal data due to failure to read loan agreements. This is not peculiar to Nigeria; it is common in every part of the world.

“Unfortunately, most of the information are from those who obtained loans without going through the agreement they signed before accessing the loans.

“Many operators function solely online, without physical offices. This makes regulations more complex. However, compliance with data protection laws remains mandatory.

“Before any digital loan giver operates in Nigeria, it is mandatory to look at the areas of privacy,” he said.

Olatunji said that Nigeria had several consumer protection entities, such as the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), that take the lead on consumer protection.

The NDPC boss listed other key agencies involved in regulating the space to include the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Police.

He said that any digital lender should obtain approval and licensing from the FCCPC, with strict requirements to uphold user privacy.

“Part of the requirements is to ensure provisions around privacy are complied with so they that they do not infringe on the rights of their customers.

“Any unauthorised access to people’s contacts is an offence and we will come after them,” he warned.

On the ongoing investigations of Sterling Bank, Remita and Temu, Olatunji said that the commission was adhering strictly to due process to ensure fairness and accountability.

“Investigations take time because we must follow laid-down procedures. We invite organisations, review their submissions, and give them the opportunity to defend themselves.

“For Sterling Bank, we have completed the process and issued our decision.

“For Temu, the process is ongoing, and they have requested an extension of time to appear before the commission, which has been granted,” he said.

Olatunji, however, reiterated that the NDPC’s priority remained ensuring accountability among data controllers and processors, as well as safeguarding the personal data of Nigerians.

  • Be Honest About Flight Delays, NCAA Tells Airlines

Be Honest About Flight Delays, NCAA Tells Airlines

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has advised airlines operating in the country to enhance transparency in reporting flight delays, particularly when caused by operational constraints

The directive was announced on Tuesday by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, through his X handle.

Achimugu cautioned airlines against giving passengers misleading or inconsistent information during prolonged delays, stressing the importance of accurate updates to help travelers make informed decisions.

“Airlines should, please, ensure to let passengers know the true reasons for lengthy delays, especially when it is a fuelling issue.

“Do not keep people waiting in false hopes from morning until late at night, only to either cancel or fly at an hour where safety at the destination city is not guaranteed.

“Everybody is affected by this avoidable situation, including top government officials. Visa interview applicants. Students. Business people. Etc.,” Achimugu said.

He noted that many of the disruptions are avoidable and emphasized that better communication could significantly reduce passenger inconvenience.

According to him, the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Chris Najomo, has expressed concern over the situation and has ordered enhanced monitoring of flight operations by relevant consumer protection officers.

“The challenges may not be the fault of the airlines sometimes, but it is the responsibility of the operator to mitigate the inconvenience of paying passengers by letting them choose to book another flight to prevent missing out on extremely important events. This is a no-brainer,” he stated.

Achimugu further cautioned airlines against issuing inaccurate operational updates.

“Do not say, ‘Bird strike’ if the problem is fuel. Do not say, ‘We will take off in 30 minutes,’ if you are not sure of fuelling. Do not announce a 20-minute delay if the operating aircraft is not on ground and has no ETA yet,” he said.

He also stressed that passengers stranded late into the night should be provided with hotel accommodation where necessary, in line with consumer protection regulations.

  • Study: Toxic Chemicals In Tap Water Harm Female Fertility

Study: Toxic Chemicals In Tap Water Harm Female Fertility

A new Australian study reveals that Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) found in tap water, at levels currently deemed safe, could harm embryos and impair female fertility.

A statement released on Tuesday by Australia’s Adelaide University concerning the findings, which examined the effects of tap water on female mice following daily consumption for four weeks or six months.

According to the study, exposure to PFAS chemicals disrupts female fertility, causing cellular damage to ovulated eggs and embryos.

“Our study shows that just four weeks of consuming regular tap water with low levels of PFAS chemicals were enough to reduce the number of cells and their function in embryos. This causes DNA damage and impairing the viability of the embryo,” said the study’s lead author Yasmyn Winstanley from the University’s Robinson Research Institute.

“These effects were more obvious after six months of drinking tap water, with reductions in the fetal weight of the offspring after maternal exposure,” Winstanley said, adding that low birth weight has been linked to obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease later in life.

The findings published in the journal Environmental Research says the damage appears irreversible and is passed down across generations.

PFAS, known as “forever chemicals,” are man-made chemicals that persist in the environment and have contaminated food and drinking water worldwide.

The study also tested water sampled from the Australian city of Adelaide’s municipal supply and modelled exposure using three common PFAS compounds, PFOS, PFOA and PFHxS. Researchers also found that carbon filtration was able to remove PFAS levels, while protecting the mouse embryos from contamination.

Kano JSC denies fresh court ruling clearing Garo of corruption charges

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has rejected claims that a High Court has dismissed corruption charges against former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Murtala Sule Garo.

The clarification was given on Tuesday in Kano by the judiciary’s spokesperson, Baba Jibo Ibrahim.

Earlier, reports had circulated that a Kano State High Court had struck out the case against Garo.

The reports stated that the decision was delivered by Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji of High Court No. 15 on Miller Road, bringing an end to the case identified as Suit No. K/133C/2024.

The case was filed by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission.

It involves Garo and other defendants, including Mohammed Sule Garo, Mustapha Sule Garo, Isah Musa Kera, MJ Multipurpose Services Ltd., and A.U. Future Investment Ltd.

However, in an audio message monitored by DAILY POST, Baba Jibo said the referenced judgement was delivered last year.

He said: “There was no court sitting between yesterday and today that could have made the ruling. There was a court sitting last year in the said court; the case was dismissed. It is this same verdict that is being circulated at the moment.”

He urged the public to disregard claims that Garo had been cleared of the allegations, adding that all judges are currently on holiday.

Nigeria becomes net petrol exporter as Dangote Refinery ships 44,000bpd

Nigeria has reached a historic milestone in its downstream oil sector, emerging as a net exporter of petrol for the first time, largely driven by increased production from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Industry data shows that the 650,000 barrels-per-day facility exported about 44,000 barrels per day (bpd) of petrol in March 2026, resulting in a surplus of roughly 3,000 bpd for the month.

The development marks a major turnaround for a country that has long relied heavily on imported refined petroleum products.

The shift from import to export reflects a structural transformation in Nigeria’s oil trade, with positive implications for foreign exchange earnings, energy security, and regional fuel supply dynamics.

In a significant expansion of its export reach, the refinery also delivered a 317,000-barrel cargo of petrol to Mozambique—its first shipment to East Africa. Another consignment is expected to be delivered to Beira in April, underscoring growing regional demand as buyers seek alternatives to Middle Eastern supplies amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Data from Kpler further revealed that Nigeria’s petrol imports plunged to 41,000 bpd in March, the lowest level on record, highlighting the rapid displacement of imports by local refining.

It would be recalled that in September last year, President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, projected that the refinery would turn Nigeria into a net exporter of fuel while ending decades of fuel scarcity.

“We have been battling fuel queues since 1975, but today Nigerians are witnessing a new era,” he said.

Shettima Visits Slain Officers’ Families In Kebbi

The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, on Tuesday, paid a condolence visit to Kebbi following recent killings in parts of the state and the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Usman-Zuru.

Shettima, who visited the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, conveyed the sympathy of President Bola Tinubu to Gov. Nasir Idris, the families of the slain security personnel, and the people of the state.

The late Speaker died on April 6 in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, after a prolonged illness.

Speaking during the visit, the vice president said he was in the state at the instance of President Tinubu to commiserate with the government and people of Kebbi over the tragic incidents.

“We are here at the behest of President Bola Tinubu to express our profound condolences to the families of the gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty, as well as over the death of the Speaker.

“The attacks on communities in Shanga Local Government Area and the loss of our gallant soldiers in Giron Masa are deeply painful.

“We are here to condole with you, the people of Kebbi, and the security agencies in the state. Our hearts are with you,” he said.

Shettima said the Federal Government delegation included the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Hajiya Zubaida Umar, to ensure adequate support for communities displaced by the attacks.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for strength for their families, as well as the state government, to bear the losses.

The vice president also commended the Kebbi Government for its efforts in education, infrastructure, and inclusive governance, noting that the state remained dear to the federal government.

Responding, Idris thanked President Tinubu for the condolence visit, describing it as a strong demonstration of concern and solidarity with the people of the state.

“We are grateful for this visit. It shows that Mr President shares our grief and stands with us at this difficult time,” the governor said.

Idris disclosed that about 11 persons, including security personnel, were killed in an ambush while responding to a distress call in Shanga LGA.

He, however, commended security agencies for their prompt response to distress situations across the state.

On the death of the Speaker, the governor said the state government did its best to ensure that he received adequate medical attention, but ultimately submitted to the will of Allah (SWT).

He further told the vice president that the state government had donated N100 million to support persons displaced by banditry, and N60 million to families of fallen security personnel.

Also speaking, the Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Sanusi Mika’ilu, commended the governor for his sustained support to families of victims and affected communities in the emirate.

The vice president was accompanied on the visit by the NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar; Deputy Chief of Staff to the Vice President, Sen. Ibrahim Hassan; and the Special Adviser on General Duties, Dr Aliyu Umar-Modibbo, among other dignitaries.
