Aregbesola Mocks Tinubu, Says ‘Renewed Hope Is A Scam’

Erstwhile political associate of President Bola Tinubu and former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has mocked the current administration, declaring that the Renewed Hope agenda is a classic scam.

Aregbesola, who is the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), also called on President Tinubu to resign over worsening insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria.

The former Osun State Governor, who made the call while delivering a speech at the ongoing ADC National Convention in Abuja, stated, “People who deliberately split the Peoples Democratic Party are today being falsely portrayed as political strategists. Since when has criminality become a strategy?

“The ADC does not, and will never, owe its existence to any individual or group, including an electoral body masquerading as a neutral umpire, with its leadership dressed in the attire of political partisanship.”

He added, “The ADC derives its existence from the aspirations and values of the Nigerian people, who are tired of the deceit and colossal mismanagement to which this country is being subjected. We owe our existence to the Nigerian Constitution.

“We declare that freedom of association, including the right to form or belong to any political party, is guaranteed and is a fundamental right.”

He explained that, “We are here because the ADC is on a rescue mission to reclaim the country from the strangulating grip of the ruling party.

“The APC is a party that has foisted on the country an electoral law that stinks of forgery, where making false claims in electoral documents is no longer considered invalid; in other words, the ruling party is normalising criminality.”

He stressed, “We proclaim our existence because our country is worth the necessary sacrifices. We cannot allow khaki-socracy in Nigeria. The government claims that the recent reduction in exchange rates demonstrates its mastery of the economy.

“This is false. In truth, the exchange rate, which was about 700 naira to the dollar in the open market, not the official rate, when this government assumed office in 2023, is now about N1,400. This amounts to a 100 per cent devaluation in an import-dependent economy.

“This is terribly devastating. The cost of a litre of fuel before this administration was between 185 and 238 naira. Depending on the part of the country, it is now about 1,400 per litre and still rising,” the former minister stated.

Aregbesola expressed concern that, “The administration told Nigerians that if it does not solve the power problem by providing a constant power supply, it should not be voted for a second time.”

“Today, power supply is far worse,” he said, adding, “with some parts of the country receiving an average of two hours daily. Some other parts also receive an average of two hours daily, while others have been in darkness for weeks and months.

“Ordinarily, having made such a promise and performed woefully, an honest president should simply step down and not seek re-election. Rather, what we are witnessing is the most desperate attempt by a candidate in Nigerian electoral history to retain power at all costs, even if it means undermining the entire democratic system.

“Distinguished delegates and our rival leaders, four years ago, this government promised Nigerians renewed hope for a better future. Now, three years into its four-year term, it still makes promises and offers renewed hope.

“When exactly will this hope come to fruition? The answer is simple. It is a scam. The answer is what? A scam! If allowed, this regime will continue shouting renewed hope into eternity. We have the duty to stop scammers from retaining power.”

The former Osun State Governor also condemned a series of violent attacks across the country that have led to significant loss of lives, describing the situation as a failure of President Tinubu’s administration.

He accused the government of worsening insecurity and alleged a lack of empathy in its response to national tragedies.

Aregbesola further criticised the state of education and the economy, claiming that the number of out-of-school children has risen from 18.3 million to nearly 20 million, while many Nigerians have been pushed into extreme poverty.

He continued, “Once again, distinguished delegates, the country is drifting, and we cannot allow this continued drift into hopelessness. This is why, as I pointed out earlier, the ADC is on a rescue mission.

“On this, there is no time to spare. We call on all conscientious citizens to join us, because a fence-sitter in movements like this that require decisiveness is either a traitor or a collaborator with those who seek to destroy our country,” he stated.

Insecurity Rising Ahead Of 2027 To Distract Tinubu .. Akpabio

Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has claimed that the recent surge in insecurity across the country is politically motivated and linked to the build-up to the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in Abuja, Akpabio alleged that certain actors are sponsoring violence and attacks in a bid to distract President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and weaken his administration.

He stated that insecurity appears to be increasing because of the approaching elections, suggesting that such incidents could reduce significantly once the electoral cycle is over.

According to him, the alleged strategy is aimed at creating fear, discrediting the government, and shifting public attention away from ongoing reforms and governance efforts.

Akpabio did not name any specific individuals or groups but maintained that the trend reflects political desperation among opponents, especially as alignments and power blocs begin to form ahead of 2027.

The comments come amid growing national concern over renewed attacks, killings, and insecurity in several parts of Nigeria, with calls for stronger and more effective security responses.

Supreme Court Fixes April 22 For ADC Leadership Appeal

Nigeria’s Supreme Court of Nigeria has fixed April 22, 2026, to hear an appeal arising from the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The appeal was filed by the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, challenging earlier court rulings linked to the ongoing dispute over the party’s leadership structure.

A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, granted an accelerated hearing, underscoring the urgency of resolving the matter.

The case stems from a March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which dismissed Mark’s earlier appeal tied to a prior ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The dispute, involving figures such as Nafiu Bala and other party stakeholders, centers on who holds legitimate leadership control of the ADC, with multiple factions laying claim to key positions.

The Supreme Court has also directed all parties to file and exchange legal briefs within tight deadlines ahead of the April 22 hearing, signaling a fast-tracked resolution process.

The outcome of the case is expected to have major implications for the ADC’s stability and its positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as the party continues to attract high-profile political figures.

People can support candidates of their choice – Akpabio on Amupitan’s alleged digital footprint

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has reacted to allegations surrounding the past social media activities of an individual linked to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Joash Amupitan.

Akpabio claimed that Amupitan, just like everyone, was entitled to personal political preferences, saying he was just a mere lecturer.

Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of the new NRS building in Abuja, Akpabio addressed concerns over a resurfaced post allegedly attributed to Amupitan, which some critics have cited as evidence of partisanship.

According to him, the statement in question merely said “victory is sure” without specifying any political party, adding that it had been misinterpreted.

Akpabio also clarified that the individual was not the chairman of INEC at the time but a lecturer, stressing that private citizens are free to support any candidate or party of their choice.

He, however, noted that individuals occupying sensitive public offices must act in the interest of the entire country and maintain neutrality in their conduct.

DAILY POST reports that the remarks come amid calls by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and some Nigerians for the resignation of the INEC chairman over alleged partisanship linked to past posts on X.

Akpabio said: “And they said let us attack the people going to do the election. And they brought out a tweet they said the chairman of INEC said victory is sure.

“But he didn’t say victory is sure for APC. He did not say victory is sure for PDP, he just said victory is sure. And the man said that it’s manipulated. Nobody wants to hear. But for me, whether manipulated or not, he said victory is sure.

“He was not chairman of INEC. He was just a mere lecturer. Anybody can support anybody he wishes to, but when you are on a seat, you have to think of all the entire country and all the populace, and that’s what they are doing.”

GBV: Harmful culture of using women for debt settlement abolished in Cross River – Otive

A public affairs analyst and advocate against gender-based violence, Dr Otive Igbuzor, said an old harmful culture in Becheve communities of Obanluku Local Government Area of Cross River State tagged “Money Woman” has been abolished totally.

He disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

He described the development as a major breakthrough in ending the long-standing oppression of survivors of the “Money Woman” tradition in Becheve communities of Obanliku Local Government Area, Cross River State.

According to him, while the culture persisted, girls were given out in marriage not by choice but as instruments of financial obligation, denying them their rights to education, personal development, and autonomy.

He said the practice involved the use of young girls often at extremely vulnerable ages as a means of settling debts owed by their families.

“This was a bold and commendable step. It demonstrated that culture is not static and that harmful practices can be challenged and redefined from within.

“We initiated a renewed process of engagement with traditional rulers, clan heads, and community stakeholders.

“This process was deliberate, inclusive, and rooted in dialogue. It brought together traditional authorities, affected families, community members, and even men within these unions to openly examine the situation and agree on a way forward.

“The goal was not to impose a solution but to facilitate a community-owned resolution that would be fair, practical, and sustainable”, he said.
