Abia Govt, FIDA vow to end harmful practices against women, children

Abia State Government has reiterated its determination to fight all harmful cultural practices and gender-based violence against women and children in families and communities across the state.

The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Maureen Ahukwa, gave the assurance on Thursday in Umuahia while addressing members of the Abia State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, during the 2026 FIDA Week.

Ahukwa, who said that building a just and inclusive society requires collective action, praised the efforts of FIDA in providing legal support for women and fighting child abuse across the country.

She called for sustained collaboration with the international women lawyers to ensure that every woman and child in Abia lives in a safe and dignified environment.

Delivering a keynote speech, Professor Marvel Onwuka of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, lamented that the maltreatment of women in families and various communities has negatively affected the academic and social behaviour of children.

She raised the alarm that some students in Nigerian universities are afraid to return to their parents’ homes before and after graduation because of unresolved conflicts between their fathers and mothers.

Earlier, in her opening remarks, the Chairperson of FIDA in Abia State, Aniawonwa Njideka, called for the timely and cost-free application of laws to protect women and children from harmful societal practices and also solicited expanded legal access for victims of abuse.

Other participants at the event demanded the thorough implementation and enforcement of existing laws to protect vulnerable women and children in Abia.

Nigerians Express Disappointment Over Professor Ezeh’s Fraud Conviction

The sentencing of Nigerian-born professor Dr. Nkechy Ezeh to 70 months in a United States federal prison for stealing $1.4m meant for vulnerable preschool children has sparked widespread outrage across social media.

Ezeh, 61, a former CEO of the Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative (ELNC) in Michigan and former Associate Professor of Education, was sentenced on Wednesday by Chief U.S. District Judge Hala Y. Jarbou.

The judge described her as “a fraud and a thief,” citing what she called a “brazen and widespread” scheme involving the diversion of funds meant for low-income preschool children.

According to court records and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ezeh used proceeds from the scheme for personal expenses, including international travel to Hawaii, Europe, and Africa, a family wedding, and payments made through a “ghost payroll” involving relatives.

She was also ordered to pay $1.4m in restitution and $390,174 to the Internal Revenue Service for tax evasion. She received a concurrent 60-month sentence on the tax charge.

Her co-conspirator, a former bookkeeper, was previously sentenced to 54 months in prison. The nonprofit reportedly ceased operations in 2023, leading to job losses and disruption of services for children.

The conviction drew swift reactions online, with Nigerians expressing shame, anger and disappointment. Many focused on the nature of the victims, describing the act as “wicked,” “heartless” and “greed of the highest order.”

Others worried about the damage to the image of hardworking Nigerians in the diaspora, with one user writing, “This is why they scrutinise us abroad.”

Former Senator Shehu Sani was among the prominent voices to react, describing the conviction on his X handle as “tragic, sad and unfortunate.”

The comment drew immediate backlash on social media, with users accusing him of showing misplaced sympathy for a convicted fraudster who stole from vulnerable children.

Beyond the senator’s remarks, reactions across social media were largely characterized by moral outrage, with some users also injecting humour into the discussion.

On Instagram and Facebook, one widely circulated comment read, “She looks like she ate those children’s lunch,” drawing attention for its blunt tone. Other users took a more reflective approach, with one writing, “Contentment is the real deal,” while another commented, “Generational wealth in the mud.”

The conversation, still building across Nigerian online spaces, captured a familiar frustration that those entrusted with the welfare of the most vulnerable too often become their biggest threat.

He cheated on me with Mbong Amata, BBNaija’s Tega, others – Frank Edoho’s wife breaks silence

Sandra Edoho, the estranged wife of popular TV host Frank Edoho, has also accused him of cheating on her during their marriage.

Sandra, who made the allegation in a lengthy post on her Instagram Story on Thursday, noted that she has video evidence to back up her claims.

She stated this while reacting to her alleged leaked sex video with singer Chike.

DAILY POST reports that news of Sandra’s alleged extramarital affair with singer Chike surfaced online last week after Frank Edoho vowed never to commit to any woman again.

Breaking her silence amid the backlash, Sandra, who also accused Frank of having affairs with multiple women, including some popular Nigerian actresses and a BBNaija star, urged him to move on with his life.

Sandra further accused him of abusing the financial access she gave him.

“Have you ever paid school fees? Have you ever? All you did was abuse the financial access you had to my funds, squandering my money on prostitutes and loose women. So many numerous transactions in Lekki hotels, Airbnb apartments, lounges and bars. You sold my property without my permission for chicken change and still squandered the earnings from it within one week on different girls. Documented evidence dey! Chai!”

While accusing Frank of denying her sex, she named Adaeze Ugboaja, Tega Dominic, Amaka Okeke, and Mbong Amata among women he allegedly cheated on her with.

“Disappearing for weeks on end with loose women and whores like Adaeze Ugboaja at The Hard Rock Cafe, or is it Tega Dominic @its_tegadominic, the BBNaija girl, or is it Amaka Okeke @diaryofalionqueen, whom you claimed you were trying to get endorsement and sponsorship for ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,’ who you brought into our home to sleep with on our matrimonial bed? Or is it the smelling prostitutes whom you led into our home, where I had to video record you escorting her to the gate? Or is it the whore you had on your Snapchat, frolicking in her bikini, snapping with your own phone while you were there blowing kisses to her?

“When I was pregnant with our first child, you would rather have a prolonged affair that lasted years with an actress, Mbong Amata, amongst other women. Where do I even begin? The nights crying on the floor begging that you see me, with you walking out and not returning for days,” she wrote.
