The Nigeria Police has held prayers for the seventeen police officers who paid the supreme price following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, in the early hours of 8th May, 2026.

DAILY POST reported that several gallant personnel of the Nigerian Army also made the ultimate sacrifice while courageously repelling the attack.

Speaking during the prayers, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, said their sacrifice represents the highest form of patriotism and duty to the nation.

Disu noted that the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Police Mobile Force, continues to maintain hundreds of personnel across the North-East region in joint operations with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, confronting terrorism and violent extremism daily.

 

“Our officers continue to put their lives on the line, often under extremely difficult conditions, so that every Nigerian family can sleep at night with a measure of safety and peace,” he said.

He said, “We want every Nigerian to feel, and to know in their hearts, that there are men and women in uniform who wake up every morning with one purpose: to serve, to protect, and if called upon, to give everything. 

“Behind every fallen officer is a family left behind, a future cut short, and a nation that owes them an immeasurable debt of gratitude. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and we solemnly pledge that their deaths will not be in vain. 

“The Nigeria Police Force will not waver. We will continue to show up, to stand firm, and to give our very best in service to this great nation.

“To the families of our fallen heroes, the Nigeria Police Force stands with you in this painful moment. We share in your grief, and we remain committed to walking this difficult road alongside you.

“May the souls of our departed officers rest in perfect peace, and may God continue to protect all security personnel defending our nation.”

Cristiano Ronaldo will make history as the first player to be named in six FIFA World Cup squads after Portugal coach Roberto Martínez included the veteran forward in his 27-man team for the tournament.

The 41-year-old Al Nassr star is expected to make his final appearance at football’s biggest stage as Portugal chase a maiden World Cup title.

Ronaldo, who debuted at the World Cup in 2006, remains the all-time leading scorer and appearance holder in men’s international football, with 143 goals in 226 matches for Portugal.

He is also the only player to have scored in five different World Cups.

Speaking to CNN in November, Ronaldo confirmed that the upcoming tournament would “definitely” be his last World Cup.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi could also join Ronaldo as the first men’s player to feature in six World Cups.

Martínez’s squad announcement also carried an emotional tone following the death of Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Spain last year at the age of 28.

Jota had been a regular member of the national team, and Martínez said the late forward would remain in the thoughts of the squad throughout the tournament.

Portugal’s squad features several top European-based stars, including Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias, Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes, and Paris Saint-Germain quartet Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos.

Ronaldo’s Al Nassr teammate João Félix was also included in the squad.
Portugal have been drawn in Group K alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan and Congo. They begin their campaign against Congo on June 17 in Houston.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday said the Public Health Emergency of International Concern declared over the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda followed International Health Regulations (IHR) procedures.

WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, said this at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, saying the declaration was issued under Article 12 of the International Health Regulations due to the growing concerns over the epidemic.

“On May 18 I declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern for an Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda. This is the first time a D-G declared a PHEIC before convening an Emergency Committee,” Ghebreyesus said.

He added that the committee would meet on Tuesday to consider temporary recommendations regarding the rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak.

“It is done under Article 12 of the IHR after consulting both health ministers, due to concern over the scale and speed of the epidemic,” Ghebreyesus said.

According to him, health authorities confirmed 30 Ebola cases in Ituri province, DRC, while Uganda recorded two confirmed infections in Kampala, including one death linked to travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He said one American national tested positive for Ebola and was transferred to Germany for treatment, while authorities continued tracing contacts connected to confirmed infections recorded in affected communities across the neighbouring countries.

Ghebreyesus said that more than 500 suspected Ebola cases and 130 suspected deaths had been reported, warning that figures could change as surveillance operations, laboratory testing and contact tracing activities intensified across affected areas.

“Numbers will change as surveillance, contact tracing and lab testing scale up,” Ghebreyesus said.
He emphasised that improved monitoring systems would likely increase confirmed infections and suspected fatalities reported by health authorities in coming weeks.

According to him, confirmed cases recorded in urban centres including Kampala and Goma, alongside deaths involving health workers, suggested healthcare-associated transmission, raising fears about wider community spread and increasing pressure on medical facilities.

“Ituri is highly insecure. Conflict intensified since late 2025, escalating in the last two months with civilian deaths,” Ghebreyesus said.

He warned that worsening insecurity and displacement were contributing significantly to Ebola transmission risks there.

“More than 100,000 newly displaced. Displacement worsens Ebola spread. Ituri is a mining zone with high population movement, increasing risk of further spread,” Ghebreyesus said while describing conditions complicating containment efforts in eastern Congo.

According to Ghebreyesus, the outbreak was caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain of Ebola, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutics available in spite of ongoing international public health interventions.

He said countries could still contain Ebola transmission through stronger risk communication campaigns, community engagement programmes, surveillance systems, patient isolation and effective contact tracing measures coordinated by national authorities and international health partners.

“Uganda postponed Martyrs’ Day celebrations for up to two million people due to risk,” Ghebreyesus said, noting that authorities acted to prevent mass gatherings capable of accelerating Ebola transmission among vulnerable populations.

The WHO chief said emergency teams were already deployed with personnel, medical supplies, equipment and funding support, while he approved an additional 3.4 million dollars, bringing total emergency allocations to 3.9 million dollars.

The Osun State Police Command has launched the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU.

The launch was held at the headquarters of the Osun State Police Command, Osogbo on Tuesday.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, the unit is in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as part of sustained efforts to strengthen security and the fight against violent crimes across the nooks and crannies of the state.

CP Gotan also revealed that the VCRU is an initiative of the Inspector-General of Police, which is aimed at establishing a more coordinated, efficient and intelligence-led framework for responding to violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism and other related violent offenses.

He said, “it is also expected to operate at all times in full compliance with constitutional provisions, the Nigeria Police Act 2020, other related laws and applicable international Human Rights standards, while remaining accountable and serving as a bridge of trust between the Nigeria Police Force and the public.”‎

He also assured that police operatives will be deployed to boundaries with neighbouring states to forestall violent crimes and kidnappings.

“Further to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police to ensure strict adherence to extant laws and international human rights standards, officers deployed to this Unit are presently undergoing intensive training on human rights, as well as social and emotional intelligence, to enhance professionalism and guide their relationships with members of the public. 

“It is pertinent to state that this programme came at a period we are facing security challenges especially from our neighbouring states. Meanwhile police operatives will be deploy to our neighbouring boundaries to forestall a repeat of what happened there.” 

Gotan, charged operatives deployed to the Unit to remain guided by its core mandates and clearly defined standard operating procedures.

The CP reiterated that the VCRU initiative is a reflection the Force’s unwavering commitment to reassuring and rebuilding public confidence through professional and accountable policing practices.

“Therefore, any act capable of tarnishing the image of Force should be jettisoned.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Madagascar, Tanzania, and Guinea-Bissau in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, DAILY POST reports.

The draw ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association, EFA, Cairo on Tuesday.

Éric Chelle’s side was among the seeded teams, along with some of the continent’s top guns.

Nigeria will be overwhelming favourites to finish in first position in the group.

The first two teams in the group will qualify for the AFCON 2027 finals.

The qualifiers will be played across three FIFA international windows between September 2026 and March 2027.

Match days one and two are scheduled for 21 September and 6th October 2026, while the third and fourth rounds of fixtures will take place from 9 to 17 November 2026.

 The final qualification matches are set for 22 to 30 March 2027.

A Nigerian athlete and graduate student, Oluwabukola Pereira, has been shot dead during a suspected robbery at a car service centre in Lockland, Ohio, United States.

Pereira, 30, was working as a cashier at the facility when the incident occurred on May 8.

Authorities said investigations into the shooting are ongoing, while the motive behind the attack has not yet been officially confirmed.

According to a co-worker, Don Simpson, the assailant allegedly fled with about $1,500 after robbing the business.

Simpson said Pereira attempted to pursue the suspect before she was shot twice.

“So the guy came in and robbed her, and when he ran, she ran behind him. And when they got to the back, he shot her,” he said.

The late Pereira was a middle-distance runner from Lagos, Nigeria, where she competed in several national athletics championships before relocating to the United States.

At the time of her death, she was pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at Xavier University and was only days away from graduation.

Pereira’s journey to the United States was reportedly made possible through the support of James Lafferty, former Chief Executive Officer of Coca-Cola West Africa, who discovered her athletic talent while working in Lagos.

Lafferty said Pereira arrived in the US with just $10 and a scholarship opportunity.

Before enrolling for her MBA, Pereira earned a bachelor’s degree from Southwest Baptist University and later obtained a master’s degree in communication from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Local law enforcement authorities have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the killing as investigations continue.
