INEC not above the law, must operate within limits — Opatola

Legal analyst, Victor Opatola has issued a strong reminder that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, must operate strictly as an administrative body within its constitutional limits.

He argued that INEC’s role is clearly defined; to organise, supervise, and manage elections and should not extend beyond what the law prescribes.

According to him, the strength of Nigeria’s democracy depends on institutions staying within their legal boundaries and respecting due process at all times.

“INEC must understand that it is an administrative body,” Opatola said, stressing that compliance with constitutional provisions is non-negotiable.

His statement has added fresh push to ongoing national debates on electoral reform, institutional accountability, and the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process.

UCL: Seaman predicts Arsenal vs PSG final after Gunners clinch EPL title

Arsenal legend David Seaman is backing the current squad to add the Champions League title to the Premier League title they just won.

The Gunners were confirmed champions on Tuesday night, after Bournemouth held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium.

Erling Haaland’s late equaliser was not enough to keep City in the title race until the final day.

Arsenal will lift the trophy at Crystal Palace on Sunday, before preparations begin to play Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final next week.

When asked for his prediction ahead of the game in Budapest, Seaman replied: “It’s all about winning, it’s not how we play.

“But the old famous scoreline, ‘1-0 to Arsenal’, has still got a great sound to it.”

Insecurity: ‘Nigerians dying on your mandate’ – Actor Laide Olabanji tells Tinubu

Laide Olabanji, Ace Nollywood actor and CEO of LAIBAN Films International, has faulted the administration of President Bola Tinubu over its inability to protect the lives and properties of citizens.

The producer who was reacting to the worsening insecurity across the country, particularly the recent killing of a teacher who was beheaded in Oyo State, as well as daily killings by bandits in Plateau State, criticised Tinubu for failing to govern in the interest of Nigerians.

Olabanji questioned the government’s humanity. He lamented the non-stop bloodshed in Nigeria and the government’s nonchalant behavior and lack of responsiveness.

Speaking in pidgin, he said, “On your mandate we dey cry, on your mandate them dey cry, on your mandate, on your mandate. On your mandate people dey die.

“Nigerians are being killed every minute. And you are not afraid of God who created heaven and earth. You’ve turned the citizens’ lives to kite, they are being killed every day, and you are not responsive.”

Sharing the video on his Instagram page on Wednesday, he wrote, “If you can’t give Nigerians good electricity, better roads, if you can’t remove hunger in the country, if you can’t bring down fuel price, kindly give Nigerians good security.

“Nigeria is bleeding, Nigerians are dying in the hands of bandits and kidnapers. Let the killings stop in the country.”

  • Niger APC primaries: Group cries out over ‘exclusion of Christian aspirants’

Niger APC primaries: Group cries out over ‘exclusion of Christian aspirants’

The Niger State Christian Voice in Politics and Governance has called on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to intervene over what it described as the exclusion of Christian aspirants from the ongoing National Assembly primaries of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Niger State.

The group warned that the alleged development, arising from the party’s consensus and zoning arrangements, could worsen religious imbalance in politics and threaten peaceful coexistence in the state if not urgently addressed.

Speaking at a press briefing in Minna, the Convener, Habila Daniel Diko, alleged that Christian aspirants seeking Senate and House of Representatives tickets had been systematically sidelined.

“We have noted with great concern the deliberate and systemic exclusion of Christian aspirants under the guise of consensus and zoning,” Diko said.

He further claimed that the process had left Christians without meaningful representation among those emerging as National Assembly candidates in the state.

“We have aspirants contesting. Bosso Federal Constituency primaries are still ongoing, and we have an aspirant who is contesting.

“We also have issues of insecurity in some of those areas where primaries have not yet held and there are plans on ground to conduct the elections.

“We are also hearing that the Deputy Speaker, who is supposed to be at the top hierarchy of the state is being influenced to step down for another aspirant.

“At the moment, we do not have the Governor, Deputy Governor, or Speaker from the Christian community, and now even the Deputy Speaker we have is being asked to step down for another aspirant,” he added.

Diko noted that the governor’s plan to gazette the zoning arrangement with a maximum of eight years for benefiting areas was designed to prevent dominance by some sections of the state.

Despite this, the group insisted the ongoing APC primaries had allegedly been manipulated through consensus arrangements to edge out Christian aspirants.

“Consensus and zoning should not be weaponised to deny qualified Christian aspirants the opportunity to participate in the democratic process,” Diko warned.

He added that if the situation was not addressed, it could discourage Christian youths from active participation in politics and weaken confidence in the democratic system.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Niger State APC through its Publicity Secretary, Musa Sarkinkaji, were not successful as at the time of filing this report.
