2027: Female aspirant, Nkem Okereke emerges NRM presidential candidate

Dr Esther Nkem Okereke has emerged as the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Mission, NRM.

Okereke emerged through a consensus agreement brokered by the leaders of the party.

National Chairman of the party, Prince Dr Chinedu Obi said that a rescued Nigeria is possible and that a prosperous Nigeria is achievable.

Obi noted that Nigeria possesses vast mineral resources, fertile agricultural land,  strategic geographical positioning, energetic youth populations,  entrepreneurial citizens and immense human capital.

He observed that despite these advantages, millions remain trapped in poverty.

According to him, the paradox of Nigeria is that a nation so rich has produced so many poor people, adding that Okereke has the ability to return the nation to its former glory.

“For years, global reports repeatedly  described Nigeria as the poverty capital of the world, a title no nation should wear with comfort and no leadership should accept with resignation.

“We shall transform education by restoring standards, improving access, strengthening technical and vocational training, investing in  research  and  innovation,  and  preparing  our  youth  for  a competitive global economy.

“We  shall reform healthcare by prioritizing  primary healthcare systems,  strengthening  health insurance coverage, investing in medical personnel, and ensuring that quality healthcare becomes a right rather than a privilege,” he said.

In her acceptance speech, the Okereke said that when the story of Nigeria’s rebirth is finally written, history will remember that at a moment of national despair, ordinary citizens chose courage over fear, unity over division, hope over cynicism, and progress over stagnation.

She said, “Future generations will look back at this defining moment; they will say that when Nigeria stood at the edge of despair, a people arose with courage, unity, faith, and determination and rescued their nation.

“I deliberately chose the NRM a political party established to confront and rectify the systemic crises of governance in Nigeria.

“At the core of the NRM’s ideology is the deliberate and multi-dimensional concept of ‘rescue.’ Far from being a mere populist slogan, ‘rescue’ is conceptualized as an urgent, interventionist necessity, a political and socio-economic salvage operation required to pull Nigeria back from the brink of institutional collapse, economic stagnation, and widespread insecurity caused by decades of bad governance.

“The NRM positions itself as a generational vanguard. By mobilizing the youth, championing ethical leadership, and advocating for structural re-engineering, the movement seeks to transition Nigeria from a state of survival to one of sustainable development.

“The NRM ideology are on all fours with my vision and mission which ultimately, is the motivation for my candidature in the Presidential election as a veritable partner to achieve the project ‘Rescue Nigeria’.”

Vote wrong President, dollar will jump to 2000 – Pastor Ibiyeomie warns Nigerians

Pastor David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministries has warned Nigerians against voting the wrong President in 2027.

Ibiyeomie warned that the United States dollar might rise to N2000 for one naira if Nigerians vote for the wrong President in 2027.

Addressing his members in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the clergyman urged Nigerians to vote for somebody with vision.

He said: “Naira was one hundred and something seven years ago now it’s N1,610, if you make the mistake it will be N2000.

“If you make the mistake of voting the wrong person in 2027, Dollar will move to N2000 for 1 Dollar.

“Vote for someone with a vision for Nigeria, all these parties you are calling have all failed. Look for somebody with a vision.

“Remain in your party but vote any man that has a vision otherwise you will come back to tell me we are regretting.

“Don’t make the mistake again, vote individuals who have something to offer, all parties have failed. When one party doesn’t favour them they jump to another, they jump like prostitutes from here to there.

“If you collect money you are Esau, he sold his birthright, when you share money it’s in the hands of a few but a man of vision turns the life of everyone.”

PDP faction suspends Bode George over ‘anti-party activities’

The disciplinary committee of a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State has suspended former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Bode George and 23 other members over alleged anti-party activities.

This is contained in a statement by the committee chairman, Elder Kayode Ogunbiyi, and secretary, Barrister Desmond Agbo, on Friday.

The committee noted that the action became necessary following what it described as repeated conduct capable of causing disaffection within the party.

According to the committee, the resolution was reached at a meeting held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, where petitions against several party leaders and members were reviewed, particularly allegations bordering on anti-party activities and violations of the PDP constitution.

The committee equally revealed that it revisited previous disciplinary action taken against Chief Olabode George by the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, stressing that he remains suspended as earlier pronounced.

It said cases involving members accused of defecting to other political parties or engaging in unauthorised collaborations against the PDP were also considered.

Among those affected by the suspension are Chief (Mrs.) Aduke Maina, Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, Mr. Laja Adeoye, Capt. Tunji Shele, Chief Sunday Olaifa, Mr. Gbenga Adegbesan, Hon. Rita Orji, H.E. Mrs. Kofoworola Bucknor, Chief (Mrs) Onikepo-Oshodi, and Mrs. Idera Sodipo.

Others include Prince Adedipe Dauda Ewenla, Hon. Bode Ogundipe, Hon. Aminu Suleiman, Dr. (Mrs.) Roli George, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, Mr. Adeyemi Moyegun, Chief Taiwo Kuye, Mrs. Coker, Hon. Setonji Koshoedo, Alhaji Muritala Ashorobi, Mr. Dare, Dr. Amos Alabi Fawole, and Hon. Olumuyiwa Owodara Richard.

The disciplinary committee stated that all affected members are barred from participating in any PDP activities in Lagos State and can no longer represent the party in any capacity.

It further warned that legal action could be taken against any of the suspended members who continue to act in a manner contrary to the interests of the party.

“Our committee has recommended strict legal procedures be instituted against any of the suspended persons who continue to act contrary to the interests of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State,” the statement added.

Eating Spoilt Foods Can Cause Liver Cancer — Expert

A food microbiologist at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah Kogi State, Dr. Michael Ukwuru, has warned Nigerians against consuming spoilt tomatoes, black-stained onions and poorly preserved grains.

According to Ukwuru, the practice could expose people to cancer-causing toxins.

His warning follows reports of increased demands for spoilt tomatoes by Nigerians due to economic hardship and surge in the cost of tomatoes in markets. His warning also aligned with that of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LSCPA), and a health influencer, Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, who recently urged members of the public to desist from consuming spoilt tomatoes.

A few months ago, concerns were raised over tomato infestations in Kano State, one of Nigeria’s major tomato-producing hubs, where pest attacks destroyed several farms and triggered fears of nationwide shortages and rising prices.

Findings by THE WHISTLER at Orange Market in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, revealed that tomato prices surged by over 400 per cent within one week, worsening pressure on traders and consumers already battling economic hardship

Traders attributed the increase to seasonal scarcity, rising transportation costs, fuel prices, and recent pest attacks affecting tomato-producing states.

The food microbiologist who spoke to THE WHISTLER, urged the public to prioritise their health despite the reasons behind the high demand for spoilt tomatoes.

He explained that fungi growing on spoilt foods produce aflatoxins and other harmful mycotoxins capable of causing liver cancer and other serious health complications.

“Talking about mold infestation of tomato and onion, it is very true that consuming them could lead to liver cancer. The black stains often seen on onions and the whitish molds found on spoilt tomatoes are signs of fungal contamination caused largely by poor storage conditions.

“These molds produce aflatoxins, and apart from aflatoxins, there are other toxins produced by molds, but these aflatoxins can be very dangerous to health when consumed along with food. Most of them can survive the temperature of the cooking, get consumed and go into the blood stream,” he stated.

He further warned that washing or cooking affected onions or tomatoes does not remove the danger because the fungi penetrate deep into the food.

“When molds stay on the surface, they produce hyphae. These hyphae are collectively called mycelium, they penetrate into the onion releasing the toxins inside the onion,” he explained.

Ukwuru added that cutting away visibly affected portions does not address the problem, as some mycotoxins are heat-stable and can survive normal cooking temperatures.

“The heat required to cook your food cannot destroy the toxins. After cooking, the toxins remain potent,” he warned.

Speaking further, he said moist and poorly ventilated storage environments encourage mold growth on onions, tomatoes and several staple foods including maize, rice, millet, beans and groundnuts.

“If they are stored and the storage condition is not proper, definitely it will attract mold growth. And when it attracts mold growth, then it is likely to attract toxin production,” he said.

The microbiologist also warned against feeding mold-infested grains to animals, stressing that toxins could be transferred to humans through meat and dairy consumption.

“Animals infested with these toxins could be killed for consumption, and human beings that consume the meat of these animals can also have these toxins transferred onto them because they are heat stable and could not be destroyed by heat,” he added.

Ukwuru urged consumers to store food crops in dry and properly ventilated places, while avoiding plastic bags that trap moisture. He also called on food regulatory and consumer protection agencies to intensify monitoring of open markets and sanction traders selling contaminated food items.

He said awareness on proper food preservation remains critical in reducing health risks associated with mold-infested foods.

  • Sanusi Warns Yusuf Against ‘Excessive Tolerance’ In Governance

Sanusi Warns Yusuf Against ‘Excessive Tolerance’ In Governance

Muhammadu Sanusi II has advised Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to strengthen his authority and take firmer action against individuals undermining his administration.

Sanusi gave the charge during his traditional post-Eid Sallah homage visit to the governor in Kano, where he spoke on leadership, justice, and governance.

The Emir stressed that effective leadership requires both justice and authority, citing Islamic teachings to support his position.

“In the Holy Qur’an, Allah mentioned iron alongside revelation, which scholars interpret as symbolising power and authority. Justice cannot stand without both,” he said.

He commended Governor Yusuf for efforts in education, healthcare, and social welfare, but cautioned against showing leniency to individuals who do not respect authority.

According to him, excessive tolerance could be misinterpreted as weakness.

“People think the governor is too patient, and that is why some behave as if there is no government in Kano,” he said.

Sanusi urged the governor to assert control and ensure compliance with the law, adding that lawful citizens should be protected while offenders are sanctioned.

“My advice to you is to rise to the challenge and let people know there is government in Kano,” he added.

He also noted that the emirate council supports the administration and expressed confidence in its success.

In his response, Governor Yusuf thanked the Emir for the visit and apology over the cancellation of the Hawan Daushe Sallah procession, which was suspended to prevent potential violence.

He said his administration prioritises peace and has avoided actions that could lead to unrest during public celebrations.

Yusuf also said he governs without fear of anyone except God, adding that his decisions are guided by the need to protect lives and maintain stability.

Security agencies have in recent years restricted Sallah horse-riding processions in Kano due to tensions linked to the ongoing emirate leadership dispute in the state.

  • Wike-Led PDP Denies Convention Plans To Adopt Jonathan For 2027

Wike-Led PDP Denies Convention Plans To Adopt Jonathan For 2027

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) being led by the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has strongly denied reports claiming it planned to hold a convention to affirm former President Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate, describing the reports as false, misleading, and unauthorised.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, issued a statement on Friday distancing the party from the alleged plan.

He called on security agencies to investigate the source of the reports and prosecute those responsible for what he termed an attempt to create political tension and bring the party into disrepute.

The denial follows an announcement on Thursday by a faction of the Interim National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki, which had planned to convene a convention in Abuja on Saturday to endorse Jonathan as the party’s candidate for the 2027 election.

The PDP noted that Senator Sandy Onor was recently screened, cleared, and presented as the party’s presidential candidate for 2027.

It urged former President Jonathan to publicly distance himself from the move to protect the integrity of the democratic process and his personal reputation.

“The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party has been drawn to misleading information and unfounded reports circulating in certain quarters regarding an alleged planned convention aimed at affirming former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR as the presidential candidate of the PDP,” the statement read.

“The Party wishes to categorically state that no such convention, meeting, or process has been scheduled, approved, or endorsed by the leadership or any recognised organ of the Peoples Democratic Party,” the statement added.

The party emphasised that it has successfully concluded all its primary elections, including governorship, state assembly, national assembly, and presidential primaries, in line with INEC guidelines, the Electoral Act, and the PDP Constitution.

“In view of this development, we respectfully call on former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to publicly dissociate himself from this charade in order to protect the integrity of the democratic process and preserve the credibility he earned while serving the nation.

“We also call on relevant security agencies to swiftly investigate the source of these false reports and take appropriate action against the perpetrators whose motive is nothing but to create political tension in the country.

“The PDP will henceforth not fold its arms and allow the party to be dragged into disrepute through falsehood, misinformation, and unauthorised political activities aimed at undermining its integrity and democratic structures.

“The party remains totally committed to due process, internal democracy, and the rule of law in all its political activities and engagements, and will continue to protect the sanctity of its constitutional processes and decisions,” they said.
