Por Amor: How Don Julio Turned the AMVCA into a Celebration of African Craft

Don Julio made history at the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), becoming the first luxury spirits brand ever to serve as headline sponsor of Africa’s most prestigious film and television ceremony.

Held on May 9, 2026, at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, the night marked a defining moment not just for the brand, but for the evolving relationship between premium culture and African storytelling.

The partnership was not one of logos and stage credits. In the lead-up to the ceremony, Don Julio through Daniella Peters raised glasses to the zeal and contribution of African creatives.

At the ceremony itself, Don Julio celebrated winners through The Don’s Table conc, hosting an exclusive edition for AMVCA winners.

Rather than a conventional brand moment on stage, the experience gave award recipients a platform to speak freely about their creative journeys, the discipline behind their work, and what their wins meant to the African film industry.

The evening was hosted by Uti Nwachukwu, and among those welcomed to the table were Best Actor winner Uzor Arukwe and Best Supporting Actress Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman. Don Julio also sponsored the Best Film of the Year category, placing its name on the night’s three most prestigious honours.

The brand’s presence extended to the red carpet as well, where Don Julio’s Fashion Icon of the Night, Uche Montana, arrived in a custom creation by Tubo Bereni, a look inspired by the rise of a phoenix, embodying reinvention, strength, and ambition.

“For Don Julio, the AMVCA was never just a sponsorship. It was a statement of belief in African creative excellence, delivered with the same care that goes into every bottle –  Ifeoma Agu, Group Head of Culture, Influencer & Advocacy – Diageo South, West & Central Africa.”

  • Uganda confirms three new Ebola cases

Uganda confirms three new Ebola cases

Uganda has confirmed three additional Ebola virus cases, raising the total number of infections in the current outbreak to five since the disease was first detected in the country on May 15.

The Ministry of Health announced on Saturday, that the newly confirmed cases include a Ugandan driver, a Ugandan health worker, and a woman from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, where a major outbreak has continued to raise concern across the region.

In a statement shared on X, the ministry said health authorities were intensifying response measures to curb further spread of the virus.

“The ministry continues to strengthen surveillance, case management, contact tracing and public awareness efforts to contain the outbreak and protect the health and safety of all Ugandans,” the statement read.

The latest confirmation comes a day after the World Health Organisation, WHO, raised the risk level of the outbreak in the DRC to its highest classification, citing growing regional concerns.

Earlier in the week, Uganda suspended public transport links with the DRC after reporting two initial Ebola cases, including one fatality involving Congolese nationals who had crossed the border.

Health officials say ongoing containment efforts are focused on monitoring contacts, improving surveillance systems, and reinforcing public awareness campaigns aimed at limiting further transmission across affected areas.

The exercise took place at Ireti Nursery and Primary School, Mekwen Street, off Queens Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos, with party members turning out in large numbers for the direct primary election.

The APC presidential ticket for the 2027 general election is being contested by the incumbent President Bola Tinubu and businessman Sterlyn Osifo, prompting the party to organise a direct primary to select its flagbearer.

Voting began early in the morning under tight security, with a strong presence of party supporters and stakeholders who gathered in solidarity for the President.

Prominent party leaders who monitored the exercise included Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, APC Lagos State Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, and party chieftain Kola Peregrino.

  • ICPC Explains Denial Of ADC Leaders Access To El-Rufai

ICPC Explains Denial Of ADC Leaders Access To El-Rufai

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has defended its decision to deny African Democratic Congress leaders access to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, saying it was bound by a court order limiting contact with the detained ex-governor.

ICPC spokesperson John Odey told journalists on Saturday that a subsisting court directive restricted access to El-Rufai exclusively to his immediate family members, legal counsel, and medical personnel, leaving the commission with no legal basis to admit a party delegation.

Odey said the ADC had formally applied for permission to send a delegation to visit El-Rufai at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, listing senior party figures including former interior minister Rauf Aregbesola and ex-attorney general Abubakar Malami among those who intended to call on the former governor.

The commission responded in writing to reject the request, citing the court’s restrictions, and Odey said the letter was delivered and acknowledged by the party before the delegation arrived.

He dismissed the party’s claim that its leaders were harassed or intimidated at the commission’s Abuja premises, describing the security presence at the gate as routine and not a response to the visit. He denied that multiple police vehicles were deployed against the delegation, saying armed officers stationed at the facility were part of standard security arrangements.

“The court was specific that access is limited to immediate family members, legal counsel, and doctors. We are bound by that order,” Odey said, adding that the commission remained apolitical and was only adhering to the law.

The ADC had accused ICPC of blocking its leaders and characterised the action as intimidation of opposition figures.

El-Rufai is standing trial on nine amended charges bordering on alleged violations of anti-corruption, procurement, and fraud laws relating to his tenure in Kaduna State. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
