Remi Tinubu Donates N100m Empowerment Grants To 2000 Ekiti women

The wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Saturday announced a donation of N100m empowerment grant for 2,000 women in the state.

She spoke at the Pavilion in Ado Ekiti, as she expressed gratitude to the people for their support for Oyebanji’s administration, while calling on them to vote for him in the forthcoming governorship poll.

Tinubu also announced a N100m grant for women in the state, saying 2,000 beneficiaries would receive N50,000 each to support their businesses.

“We are here to thank you because you came in your numbers and waited for us since morning. I have asked the governor’s wife to empower 2,000 women with N50,000 each. It is not a loan, it is to support your businesses,” she said.

The wife of the President said she would return to the state to campaign for her husband re-election in 2027, saying that the country would record further progress if the President secures a second term.

During her visit to the state, she inaugurated an Information and Communication Technology Centre at the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, a project executed through her Renewed Hope Initiative.

Also speaking, the wife of the governor, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji, thanked women in the state for their support and urged them to vote for her husband in the June 20 election.

“We should vote for BAO and by January, for Jagaban (President Tinubu). In 2023, it was Ekiti that first released presidential results. It will be massive again by 2027,” she said.

Governor Oyebanji described the First Lady’s visit and interventions in the state as evidence of her commitment to the welfare of Nigerians.

He also thanked President Tinubu for supporting his administration, saying the assistance from the Federal Government had contributed to the achievements recorded by his government.

“All the things we have done, whether in healthcare, road construction, employment and other sectors, would not have been possible without the support of my father, President Tinubu,” he said.

The governor added that residents of the state would reciprocate the support by backing the President in the 2027 election.

Also, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, urged women in the state to continue supporting the APC-led administrations at both the state and federal levels.

UCL: Arsenal create record after losing final to PSG

Arsenal on Saturday created a record after losing the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain.

Recall that Luis Enrique’s side defeated the Gunners on penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.

The goals of the match were scored by Kai Havertz and Ousmane Dembele during regular time.

However, according to OptaJoe, Arsenal remains the team with the most games (226) in Champions League history to never lift the trophy.

This record follows their 2006 and 2026 final defeats, maintaining their status without a premier European title.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s possession average (24.7%) was the lowest by a team in a Champions League final on record (since 2003-04), as well as their lowest in any match under manager Mikel Arteta, where they had 11 men on the pitch throughout.

Security guard nabbed for stealing motor spare parts in Ogun

A 32-year-old security guard, Friday Ayuba, has been arrested for allegedly stealing motor spare parts belonging to his employer at Ita-Asu village, via Owode-Egba, in Obafemi Owode local government area of the state.

The arrest was made by operatives of the Owode-Egba division on Saturday, following a report received from the manager of the affected company.

The suspect was said to have removed several motor spare parts from the company’s premises.

Confirming the arrest on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, revealed that items recovered include four air controls, two air boosters, two engine seats, and two fuel pumps.

Babaseyi said, “On 30th May 2026, at about 6:00pm the manager of the affected company, informed the police that the suspect had earlier been apprehended by operatives of the Quick Response Squad (QRS), Ogun State Command, at the Sagamu Interchange axis along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while allegedly attempting to move company property without authorization.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, an employee of the company, was found in possession of several motor spare parts suspected to have been unlawfully removed from the company’s premises.

“The recovered items include four air controls, two air boosters, two engine seats, and two fuel pumps, all identified as property of the company. During the course of investigation, the suspect reportedly admitted to the theft. Detectives promptly visited the scene for further investigation and documentation, while the recovered items were secured as exhibits.”

The image maker stated that the suspect is in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.

He quoted the State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, to have commended the vigilance of the company management and the swift, coordinated response of the Quick Response Squad and officers of Owode-Egba Division, which led to the successful recovery of the stolen property and the apprehension of the suspect.

The CP reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting businesses, critical assets, and residents across the state through intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention strategies.

Ojajuni also urged employers and members of the public to remain security conscious and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation or through the command emergency lines.

Israeli troops capture strategic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon

Israeli forces have seized control of the strategic Beaufort Castle, a Crusader-era fortress perched on a mountain in southern Lebanon, marking their deepest military advance into Lebanese territory in more than 25 years, the Israeli military announced on Sunday.

The capture of the historic stronghold, located near the city of Nabatiyeh, followed several days of fierce clashes and airstrikes targeting nearby villages where Israeli troops engaged Hezbollah fighters in the mountainous region.

The development represents a significant military gain for Israel in the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, which escalated into full-scale hostilities in early March. The latest fighting adds to decades of tensions between Israel and Lebanon that date back to the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948.

The operation was carried out despite a ceasefire agreement that has technically remained in effect since April 17.

Israeli military spokesperson for Arabic-language media, Avichay Adraee, shared a photograph on X showing Israeli soldiers moving around the grounds of the fortress following its capture.

Beaufort Castle has previously featured prominently in the conflict between the two countries. Israeli forces first took control of the site in 1982 and maintained a presence there until withdrawing from southern Lebanon in 2000.

In a statement, the Israeli military said it had launched an operation several days earlier across the Beaufort Ridge and the nearby Suluki Valley with the objective of dismantling Hezbollah positions and eliminating what it described as direct threats to Israeli civilians.

The military added that it remained prepared to widen the scope of the operation if circumstances required.

Israel has intensified its military campaign in Lebanon in recent days, issuing evacuation warnings to residents across the country’s southern region while deploying troops beyond the Litani River, an area that had long served as an informal dividing line in previous phases of the conflict.

The Labour Party candidate also called for increased investment in electricity generation and improvements in the healthcare sector to enhance the well-being of citizens.

On the economy, Boms said efforts must be made to improve the ease of doing business in Rivers State to create opportunities for residents and reduce dependence on government.

He said the Labour Party would unveil its policies and programmes at the appropriate time, adding that the family remains the foundation of the party’s philosophy.

According to him, many societal challenges can be addressed when families are strengthened and function effectively.

‘I’m Not Interested In Being A Legend’ – PSG Coach Enrique

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has played down talk of legacy and “legend” status after guiding the French champions to a second successive UEFA Champions League title with a shootout win over Arsenal in Budapest.

The Spanish manager, who has now added another European crown to his managerial achievements, insisted his focus remains on the team rather than personal recognition.

“Legend? I’m not interested in that,” Luis Enrique said after the final. “This is about the team, the players, the work we have done throughout the season. That is what matters most.”

PSG defeated Arsenal 4-3 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw, securing back-to-back Champions League titles and further establishing themselves as one of Europe’s dominant sides.

The victory follows last season’s emphatic triumph over Inter Milan and cements PSG’s status as the first club to retain the trophy since Real Madrid’s three-peat between 2016 and 2018.

Despite the achievement, Luis Enrique remained grounded, stressing that success at this level is built on collective effort rather than individual accolades.

“We try to be there again next year,” he said. “When you have quality players and the right mentality, you always have a chance. But we still need to improve, to refresh the squad, and keep pushing forward.”

Under his leadership, PSG have undergone a tactical and cultural transformation, shifting away from a star-dependent model towards a more balanced, disciplined unit built on structure and youth.

The result has been sustained success in Europe and a clearer identity on the pitch, with the club now widely regarded as one of the most complete teams in world football.

However, Luis Enrique insisted that even this does not change his perspective.

“It’s amazing, yes,” he said of the achievement. “But football moves quickly. You win today, and tomorrow you start again.”

PSG’s latest triumph leaves them on the brink of a potential European dynasty, but their manager appears more interested in the process than the praise even as his name continues to grow in the competition’s modern history books.

Otti Emerges LP Governorship Candidate With 368,230 Votes Ahead 2027 Election

The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has declared Governor Alex Otti as its gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 governorship election after scoring a total of 368,230 votes during the party gubernatorial primaries held across the 184 wards in the state.

Speaking at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, venue of the State Collation Centre on Saturday night, after being declared as the Governorship candidate by Hon. Acho Obioma, the National Organising Secretary of the Labour Party and Returning Officer of the primary elections in Abia State, Otti said that having been elected as candidate, the job of fighting to win elections has just started.

Governor Alex Otti Being presented with the certificate of return by the LP national secretary Hon. Acho Obioma

“I want to also call our attention to the fact that the job has just started. This crosses you to where you need to start fighting from.

“If you were not a candidate, then you can’t fight. But now that you are a candidate, you know, the election is a contention. You have to contend with yourself. Don’t kid yourself to say no fight. It’s a contention. At the end of the day, the best person must win. And it’s only one person that will win.

“So, a lot of our candidates have already contested for elections before, and won those elections. So, you are going to actually do better. If you look at the number of people that came out for the primaries, you will find out that it was twice the total number of votes that we got the last time.

“And this is just the Labour Party. There are a lot of people who don’t belong to parties who you need to now go out and talk to and convince them to either join the party or at least vote for members of the party,” Otti stated.

He thanked the election primary committee for conducting the election, the INEC monitoring team, and congratulated all the candidates that emerged.

“I would like to accept this nomination. And I accept it because we know that we still have a lot to collectively deliver, to Abians, and of course, Nigeria.

The State Chief Executive appreciated the manner in which the election was conducted. “There was no rancour, there was no violence anywhere.

“All the disagreements that could have happened have been dealt with even before today. And that’s why we had a very smooth primary across board.

“And I want to thank our leaders who sat down here in the last several weeks trying to resolve problems and disagreements between us that led to consensus candidates in virtually every constituency,” Otti stated.

Presenting the certificate of Return to the Governor, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, Hon. Acho Obioma said, “This is the beginning of the next phase of governorship in Abia State.”

He said that Abians are happy with the leadership of Otti and assured that he would be consolidating on his achievements.

Declaring the results earlier, the National Organising Secretary of the Labour Party and Returning Officer, Mrs Opara disclosed that the Governor polled 368,230 votes and informed those present that the election was by direct primaries.

Opara further noted that the primary elections were done in compliance with the party’s constitution and the INEC’s electoral guidelines and congratulated the Governor and other candidates that emerged.

Other candidates that emerged were, Senator Enyinnaya Abairibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha and Chief David Ogba Onuoha for Abia South, Abia Central and Abia North senatorial zones respectively.

  • INTERVIEW: FCT Area Councils Are Not Proactive – NUT Chairman

INTERVIEW: FCT Area Councils Are Not Proactive – NUT Chairman

Comrade Baba Ameh is the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Kubwa Branch, Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT). He spoke with THE WHISTLER on unpaid allowances, teacher welfare, training, school infrastructure in the territory, the state of education in Nigeria, and why the nation must invest in education.

There appears to be a significant gap between secondary and primary schools in the FCT, especially regarding infrastructure and teacher welfare. What accounts for this disparity?

Actually, the gap is there. And the reason is not far-fetched. We have tiers of government. We have three tiers of government: the federal, state, and local. That is how schools also operate. That is how education operates.

There are some schools that are handled by the federal, like the unity schools. Then at every state they have their own state government schools that the state government manages. Then you also come down to the local government, as it is supposed to be.

So, as it is practised here in the FCT. The primary schools in the FCT are under the Area Councils. All the public primary schools are under them.

So in terms of salary and funding, who is responsible for the primary school teachers?

In terms of salary and funding, it is directly under the supervision of the local government, which is the Area Councils in the FCT. So anytime there is an upward review in wages for workers, it is expected that as the FCT Authority is doing its own, which is directly monitored by the FCTA, the Area Council will do its own.
But oftentimes we discover that some of the leaders of the Area Council, for one reason or another, on their own, feel some responsibilities are not meant for them.
So, they will wait. Sometimes they even make comparisons. They try to compare: “Is this thing happening in other local governments across the 36 states?” They forget that this is the Federal Capital Territory. So, we are operating at the federal level… whatever, in the wisdom of government, anytime they come up with an upward review in wages, for instance minimum wage, or peculiar allowance, they are expected to comply.
For example, the issue of minimum wage was a struggle. When other sectors in the FCT had already gotten theirs, almost two, three years later, we were still battling with minimum wage until finally, by the grace of God, sometime last year, it was implemented, and then the Area Councils paid.

So, what we are saying in a nutshell is that when there is an upward review in wages, the local government, which is the Area Council in the FCT, is not proactive to go to the higher authority.

What is the current issue at hand between Area Council and the FCF Teachers?

For instance, the issue at hand today is the peculiar allowance. This benefit was announced by the Buhari administration at the twilight of his administration when he was about to leave. He introduced it to bridge the gap in salaries because he discovered that there are some sectors, parastatals, and ministries that their salaries are okay, while the majority of ministries earn low.

So, they decided to come up with what they call consolidated salary structures, where a certain percentage was introduced, which is called 40 percent of your consolidated basic. When it is calculated, it will raise the salary.

In the case of LEAs, which are Local Education Authorities, three and a half years down the line, we are still battling with this. Up until recently, when we embarked on a strike, we give it to the Minister of FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike for helping find a lasting solution. These issues are supposed to be taken care of to a certain extent by the Area Council.

Where they have a challenge or whatever, that is when they are suppose to bring the issue before the Minister. But we discovered that, three years down the line, there was no attempt. And we, as a union, discovered that the motive behind it is that they can incur a lot of debt and abandon it for another person coming in.

And that was what led to the strike we had recently. And by the grace of God, from that strike, the Minister called and was able to address all the issues holistically.

What else was part of the agreement?

Apart from the peculiar allowance, which is 40 percent, we have what we call a wage award of N35,000. That was not paid.

    Wage award?

Yes, award. Wage award of N35,000. It was not paid for 11 months.

Was it supposed to be every month?

No, there is a period for it. It has stopped. That wage award was introduced while awaiting the new minimum wage.
So it ran for about 11 months. And you know that the new minimum wage took effect sometime in May 2024. From this peculiar allowance, the N35,000 is a whole package.
There’s another one, 25 percent, and so on and so forth. It’s a whole package that is supposed to improve the lives of workers, not just teachers, but the lives of workers. Unfortunately, the Area Councils, because of their inaction, refuse to read the Fourth Schedule of the Nigerian Constitution where their responsibility is vested.
They are supposed to go there and study and understudy some of their own responsibilities as a tier of government. Unfortunately, what we see is that everything over time has been politicised. And some of them are even happy that workers are embarking on strike.
It’s unfortunate. These are signs and symptoms of the failure of government. And they are not helping the President. When we talk about renewal, a progressive leader is supposed to be proactive. A regressive leader is the one that is not proactive. Because you see two things: it’s either you are progressive or you are regressive. So these are issues bedevilling the Area Council as a whole.

What is the status of the 40 percent payment now?

Now, the Minister has budgeted or earmarked billions , which was calculated to settle the backlog. There was a plea that the money cannot be paid at once, at a stretch. The union accepted it on the condition that N5bn will be coming out every month: N3bn from the Area Council’s IGR, and the Minister himself volunteered N2bn from the FCT account.

However, when the payment commenced, there were still errors. Those who were vested with the responsibility of doing the calculation did not calculate it well. When the money was paid to the teachers, the teachers were underpaid. And we have taken up the matter at the level of the State Wing. What I’m trying to tell you is that, at the moment, they are reviewing the payment that was made.
Because some of these errors can lead to another round of industrial disharmony. So as it stands, thank God, last month, five-month arrears were released to teachers. And that was because the agreement was a holistic agreement.

The N35,000, the 25 percent , the 40 percent, and every other arrears were supposed to be embedded in the whole money. What we noticed was that they only singled out the peculiar allowance and paid five-month arrears. So we are not comfortable with that position.
We are expecting that at the end of this month, the right thing should be done. So we are waiting and we are watching.

Apart from salaries and wages…what about training For teachers? Who is responsible?

The training is under Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). UBEC plays a supervisory role. They are supposed to design, organise, and manage the training.

    And are they doing it?

The training of teachers, to a large extent, I would say yes. Because sometimes you hear of workshops, this kind of workshop, that kind of workshop. But if I am to speak for teachers, I would say that some of the problems we are having in education, part of it, the bureaucrats in education are also responsible.
They are the core people. Because, for instance, the Minister will not be everywhere, the President will not be everywhere, but there are people, directors for this and that, who are vested with these responsibilities.
For instance, I’m a union leader. If I’m to advocate for my members and I come to a media or public space and lie, or I prize my members very low, even the Bible says, “When the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
So you discover that those who are vested in making a case, maybe for budgets, if the federal government wants to know the budget for education, it goes through the Minister of Education. And we have a Minister. Then down the line, we have directors, we have panels, and the rest of them.

If all these people, with all hands on deck, do the needful, I won’t be coming to cry out that the kind of workshop given to us does not come with honour. The workshops that teachers attend do not give teachers their rightful place in society.
A workshop itself, apart from training and knowledge, also serves as motivation.
There are some things that you expect to see in a workshop. When you come to a workshop especially the way you are treated.

    Can you give an example?

For instance, you go to a workshop that requires you to travel some kilometres away from your station. You are expected to be paid an allowance because in this same country, people travel out of the country and they get extra pay.
So why won’t teachers be treated such? Before this period, we witnessed where some teachers were sent to China, sent to Japan, here and there, to go and understudy their curriculum or whatever. Some even went for science competitions and the rest. Today, where are those things?
So the standard is dropping. And we must tell ourselves the truth. Those who are vested with this responsibility should rise up. They should sit up.

We that are saying this, if a doctor is speaking in the medical field, he is saying it because of the health of the citizens. We too, that we are in education, if we are speaking like this, we are just crying for the future of the country.

Because there will come a time when somebody like me might not be in the system again. I must exit. But what kind of society are we leaving behind? So these are things that, if all of us look at it, I’m just saying that we can do better.

How do you want the training of teachers to be?

First and foremost, we are in the ICT age now. That is Information and Communication Technology. So if that is the case, it should be a right of every teacher to have a gadget. It’s not a privilege. Every teacher should be entitled to a gadget. To start with.
Because if you look at everything now: E-registration, E-certificate, E-result, E-this and that. True. That now brings us back to: are our teachers skilled enough in this aspect?
There should be a deliberate plan by the government to do right by the teachers. Sometimes it’s because we don’t have a voice.
In Nigeria, education should be first. Very true. Because a sound mind does not commit crime.
I read something about Plato, those who authored education. They say that when you want to build an ideal society, first build ideal people. If you have ideal people, you have an ideal society.
So if your education is quality, every product will be a quality product, including human capacity. And it has to start from the grassroots. They are fundamental: the primary school. It has to start from the foundation.
See, we might talk and talk and talk, but those who will do this thing, are they listening? Are they ready? See, if Nigeria is ready, if you say “On your mark,” at the point of “Go,” Nigeria will overtake so many countries. We have the potential for growth.
One of it is our education. If the government is sincere about education, we will go far. Let me tell you: any government that embraces education genuinely does not need to campaign.

Past three years have not been easy for us – NNPP

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has called on its members across the country to remain focused and committed ahead of the 2027 general elections despite the challenges facing the party.

The call was made by the party’s National Secretary, Dipo Olayoku, during the 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Saturday.
Olayoku said the party had gone through a difficult period since the 2023 elections, particularly with the defection of several elected officials and appointees who emerged under its platform.
