Brazil Backs Ancelotti As Selecao Chase Sixth World Cup Title

Brazil’s hopes of ending a 24-year wait for World Cup glory are increasingly resting on the shoulders of Carlo Ancelotti, with the Italian coach winning over fans, players and officials as the Selecao prepare for the tournament.

Ancelotti, who became Brazil’s first foreign coach at a World Cup after taking charge in 2025, has spent the past year adapting to life in the South American nation while attempting to restore the country’s status as the dominant force in world football.

Despite his long association with Brazilian players during a coaching career that has spanned several decades, Ancelotti arrived in Brazil aware that he faced a unique challenge.

The five-time Champions League-winning coach understood that leading the world’s most successful national team would require more than tactical expertise.

At one of his first meetings with staff at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Ancelotti made it clear that he intended to embrace the local culture.

According to those present, when officials attempted to communicate with him in Spanish and Italian, the 66-year-old responded: “No, no. I’m the one who has to make the effort to speak Portuguese here.”

That commitment led him to hire Portuguese teacher Roberto Piantino and undertake four language lessons every week.

“I was surprised by his commitment,” Piantino told BBC Sport. “I remember once we finished a lesson on a Friday and, as usual, I asked him when he wanted to do the next one. He said: ‘Tomorrow.’ But that was a Saturday.

“It happened more than once. That showed me how serious he really was about learning.”

The efforts appear to be paying off. Although Ancelotti’s first year in charge has produced mixed results, with six wins, two draws and three defeats in his first 11 matches, public confidence in him remains strong.

A survey conducted by polling institute Quaest found that 41 per cent of Brazilians approve of his work, compared to 29 per cent who disapprove.

Former Brazil international Walter Casagrande believes Ancelotti’s stature has been crucial in winning support.

“One of the things Brazil needed the most was a manager bigger than the players,” Casagrande said.

Ancelotti arrived in Brazil with an impressive résumé, having won league titles in England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France, as well as a record five UEFA Champions League trophies.

However, his appointment was not universally welcomed. For decades, many Brazilians viewed the national team coaching position as one that should be reserved for local managers.

Former Brazil captain Cafu, who won the World Cup in 1994 and 2002, admitted he initially preferred a domestic appointment.

“We are the only country to have won the World Cup five times,” Cafu said. “It’s not that a foreigner should never coach the national team, but I would have gone for a Brazilian coach.”

The debate intensified during an event for Brazilian coaches last November when former goalkeeper and coach Emerson Leao criticised the growing presence of foreign managers in the country.

“I have always said I don’t like foreign coaches in my country. We, as coaches, are to blame for this invasion,” Leao said while Ancelotti was in attendance.

Despite such criticism, Ancelotti’s calm personality and ability to connect with people have helped him settle into the role.

Former Brazil star Leonardo, who worked with Ancelotti at AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, described him as a master of adaptation.
“He is a chameleon,” Leonardo said.

“Wherever he goes, he adapts to the people, the team, the players. He is a world champion at that.

“He enters into symbiosis with the environment, and that has already happened here. People like him.”

The CBF has also demonstrated its faith in the coach by extending his contract until 2030 before he had even led the team at a World Cup.

According to reports, Ancelotti delayed signing the extension until several CBF staff members who had helped him adjust to life in Brazil were also offered long-term deals.

On the pitch, there have been encouraging signs. Brazil’s recent 6-2 victory over Panama showcased the attacking potential of a squad featuring Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Casemiro and several emerging talents.

Ancelotti remains convinced that Brazil possess the quality needed to challenge for the trophy.

“We have two of the five best players in the world,” he said, referring to Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior and Barcelona winger Raphinha.

One of his major tasks remains ensuring both players reproduce their club form for the national team. Injuries to Rodrygo and Estevao Willian have made their partnership even more important heading into the tournament.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro recently revealed how Ancelotti’s unconventional management style has already earned respect within the squad.

Recalling a crucial World Cup qualifying match against Paraguay, Casemiro said: “At half-time, a lot of people were talking, talking, talking. Then he said: ‘Guys, wait. I’m going to smoke a cigarette, I’ll be back in five minutes and then you can talk.’

“After that, he came back, spoke, and everyone was like: ‘OK. This guy is different.’”

Even in the classroom, Ancelotti’s approach reflects his preference for persuasion over authority. His Portuguese teacher recalled preparing a lesson on imperative verbs, only for the coach to reject the idea.

“He pointed it out: ‘No, no, no, I don’t communicate like that. I don’t use imperatives. It’s not my style to give orders like that,’” Piantino said.

As Brazil prepare for another attempt to reclaim football’s biggest prize, Ancelotti’s blend of experience, humility and adaptability has given supporters renewed belief that the Selecao can finally lift a sixth World Cup trophy and end the longest title drought in the nation’s history.

  • INEC warns against voter apathy ahead of Osun governorship poll

INEC warns against voter apathy ahead of Osun governorship poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has identified voter apathy as one of the major challenges confronting electoral participation in Nigeria and has intensified efforts to address the issue ahead of the 2026 Osun State governorship election.

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, stated this on Monday during a Joint Voter Education and Publicity, VEP, and Gender and Inclusivity, G&I, Implementation Meeting with Electoral Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers in Osogbo.

Babalola, who said the meeting formed part of the Commission’s strategic preparations for the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026, stressed that successful elections require extensive voter engagement and continuous public sensitisation.

She noted that although electoral administration had witnessed improvements over the years, many eligible citizens still failed to participate actively in elections due to misinformation, inadequate knowledge of electoral processes, distrust in the system, political disengagement and limited access to election-related information.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission recognises that one of the greatest challenges confronting electoral participation in Nigeria is voter apathy,” she said.

According to her, “addressing the challenge requires sustained voter education and strategic public engagement aimed at bridging information gaps among the electorate.”

The REC charged officials of the Voter Education and Publicity Department to intensify awareness campaigns on election timelines, voter registration, transfer of registration, replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards, polling procedures and election day guidelines.

She also directed electoral officers to strengthen grassroots engagement through outreach programmes in markets, motor parks, religious centres, schools, traditional institutions and community associations.

Babalola urged the officials to identify communities with historically low voter turnout and prioritise voter education activities in such areas.

She emphasised the need for stakeholder engagement involving political parties, civil society organisations, youth groups, women’s associations, traditional rulers, religious leaders, professional bodies and labour unions to enhance public confidence in the electoral process.

The REC warned against the dangers of misinformation and disinformation, saying false narratives could undermine public trust in elections if not promptly countered.

On inclusivity, she reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring equal participation opportunities for women, youths, persons with disabilities, elderly citizens and other marginalised groups.

“Our goal must be to facilitate an election that is peaceful, inclusive, credible, transparent, and characterised by substantial voter participation,” Babalola said.

Also speaking, Osun State Director of the National Orientation Agency, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, described voter education as the bedrock of credible elections.

He pledged the agency’s support for INEC through its community orientation and mobilisation officers across the state’s 30 local government areas.

A representative of Bukola Idowu, the Executive Director of Kimpact Development Initiative, Taiwo Seun, said the meeting was necessary to protect the integrity of the electoral process and curb vote-buying, vote-selling, misinformation and disinformation.

She added that the organisation would continue to support INEC in its electoral responsibilities.

Kwankwaso Denies Protest Plan, Urges Peaceful Approach To Insecurity

The vice presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Coalition (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed reports suggesting that party leaders are planning a protest over rising insecurity in the country.

Kwankwaso described the claims as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard what he termed deliberate misinformation.

He stressed that the NDC does not support actions capable of disrupting public peace or leading to the destruction of lives and property, reaffirming the party’s commitment to dialogue and non-violent engagement.

“We do not support any action that could lead to the breakdown of public order or the destruction of lives and property. As responsible leaders, we remain committed to peaceful and constructive approaches in addressing national challenges,” he said.

Kwankwaso further emphasised that the party believes in democratic processes as the appropriate avenue for change, noting that elections remain the most effective means for citizens to express grievances.

“As committed democrats, we firmly believe that the ballot box remains the most legitimate and effective way to seek change,” he added.

The former Kano State governor also expressed confidence that the NDC would achieve victory in the 2027 general elections through peaceful participation.

He urged Nigerians to ignore the circulating reports, describing them as attempts to mislead the public.

Torty Njoku Kalu, Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Police Service Commission, Abuja, said in a statement on Monday: “The attention of the Police Service Commission has been drawn to a fake list currently circulating on social media, purporting to be a shortlist of candidates scheduled for medical examination.”

  • France detains Russia-linked tanker over suspected sanctions violations

France detains Russia-linked tanker over suspected sanctions violations

French authorities have intercepted and detained a vessel suspected of being part of Russia’s sanctions-evasion network, commonly referred to as the “shadow fleet,” in the Atlantic Ocean.

The operation, carried out by the French Navy with support from allied partners, resulted in the detention of the oil tanker named Tagor on Sunday while it was navigating international waters.

French President, Emmanuel Macron confirmed the development, describing the action as part of ongoing efforts to enforce international sanctions imposed on Russia and ensure compliance with maritime regulations.

According to French maritime authorities, the vessel had departed from Murmansk in northwestern Russia and was reportedly heading toward the Cameroonian port city of Limbe when it was intercepted.

Investigators alleged that the tanker was operating under a falsely declared Cameroonian flag, raising concerns about its legal status and compliance with international shipping laws.

French officials said preliminary inspections revealed inconsistencies in the vessel’s registration documents, prompting authorities to divert the ship for further examination.

“It is unacceptable for vessels to bypass international sanctions, disregard maritime regulations, and contribute to financing Russia’s war efforts,” Macron said while commenting on the operation.

He further warned that such vessels pose significant risks not only to international security but also to marine ecosystems and maritime safety.

The interception reportedly took place more than 740 kilometres off the coast of Brittany.

French naval forces subsequently escorted the vessel to a designated anchorage area where additional inspections and verification procedures are expected to be conducted.

Authorities disclosed that the tanker carried a crew of 23 and was transporting little or no cargo at the time of its detention.

Maritime officials revealed that the vessel had previously operated under multiple national flags, a tactic commonly employed by ships seeking to conceal ownership, evade sanctions, or avoid international monitoring.

Tracking records indicated that the tanker was recently sailing off the Norwegian coast under a Madagascan flag before changing its identification.

France has intensified efforts to crack down on vessels suspected of assisting Russia in circumventing sanctions imposed following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict.

Since last year, French authorities have intercepted several ships believed to be linked to Russia’s shadow fleet, with some vessels released only after their operators paid financial penalties.

Western governments have increasingly targeted the shadow fleet, accusing it of facilitating the transportation of Russian oil and other commodities outside the restrictions imposed by the European Union, the United States, and allied nations.

European authorities estimate that hundreds of vessels are currently under sanctions for suspected involvement in such operations.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly criticised the detention of Russia-linked ships, describing such actions as unlawful interference with international shipping.
