NPFL: Short-term signings hindering clubs performance in Africa – Zubair

Former Flying Eagles tactician, Aliyu Zubair, has identified major factors hindering Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clubs from progressing beyond the group stage of continental competitions.

Zubair said NPFL clubs would continue to struggle in these competitions unless they abandon the culture of short-term player recruitment.

He pointed out that clubs aiming to compete successfully on the continent must retain a core group of players for a longer period.

Zubair stressed that this approach would help build cohesion and understanding within the team.

“We will continue to struggle in continental competitions unless we change our orientation towards short-term signings,” Zubair told Kwara SWAN’s Sports Hard Talk programme on Wednesday.

“In other African clubs, players are signed for three to four seasons, giving them the opportunity to play together for a long period.

“This gives them an advantage over clubs here in Nigeria.”

Rivers United and Rangers will participate in the CAF Champions League next season, while Shooting Stars and the winner of the 2026 President Federation Cup will play in the CAF Confederation Cup.

The action was carried out on the directive of the General Manager of OGEPA, Kehinde Bello, through the agency’s Enforcement Unit on Wednesday.

DAILY POST learnt that the sealing followed a petition submitted by the Olu of Akinbo, Oba Rasheed Olamilekan.

Following a preliminary inspection, the agency sealed the industry to prevent further environmental degradation while a comprehensive investigation into the matter continues.

NLC Backs Teachers’ Strike Over Rising Abductions

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has backed the ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) over kidnappings targeting teachers and students across the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the strike reflected teachers’ determination to protect themselves rather than continue to face persistent threats to their safety.

“The national and well-coordinated action represents the resolve of Teachers to take their destiny in their hands instead of waiting to be slaughtered to the last person.

“The action equally represents a gentle but unignorable nudge on the governments to take more seriously the growing insecurity industry,” he said.

Ajaero commended the leadership of the NUT, led by Comrade Titus Amba, for drawing attention to the worsening insecurity in schools and communities.

“We commend the leadership of the NUT, led by Comrade Titus Audu Amba for this thoughtful action across the country,” he added.

The labour leader further lamented the abduction of children in Oriire, Oyo State, describing images of the victims in captivity as heartbreaking.

According to him, Nigeria cannot continue to tolerate the rising spate of kidnappings and banditry across different parts of the country.

“We are heartbroken by the ugly pictures of our children, held and tortured by depraved bandits in the forests of Oyo state.

“As a nation, we cannot continue to fold our hands while this horror movie continues to play, from Zamfara to Oyo, from Maiduguri to Port Harcourt,” Ajaero lamented.

The NLC also threatened to embark on solidarity actions with teachers and other categories of workers if governments at all levels fail to address the country’s security challenges more effectively.

Ajaero noted that the Congress had consistently advocated improved security through protests, statements and security summits, adding that recent mass abductions in Oyo, Plateau and Kogi states showed that the country was yet to gain the upper hand against criminal groups.

He urged governments at all levels to move beyond assurances and condolence messages and take concrete steps to secure lives and property.

The NLC further called for the immediate rescue of all abducted persons and their safe return to their families.

“We recognise the tricky operational situation in Oyo. We nonetheless use this opportunity to once again call on the government at all levels to rise beyond the ritual of “we are on top of the situation” and condolence messages to concrete and measurable action.

“Free the abductees now, wherever they are held!” the union sounded.

Kebbi Assembly elects Dangoje as speaker two months after Zuru’s death

Members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly on Wednesday unanimously elected the member representing Sakaba Constituency, Salisu Muhammad Dangoje, as the new Speaker of the Assembly.

Dangoje’s emergence comes about two months after the death of former Speaker, Muhammad Usman Zuru, who passed away on April 6, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt.

His nomination was moved by the member representing Ngaski Constituency, Adamu Muhammad Birnin-Yauri, and seconded by Lauwal Haruna Gele during plenary.

Lawmakers subsequently endorsed the nomination unanimously, paving the way for Dangoje’s election and swearing-in by the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Suleiman Shamaki.

Speaking after taking the oath of office, the new Speaker thanked members of the Assembly for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to provide inclusive leadership.

He assured lawmakers of his commitment to carrying every member along in the discharge of his responsibilities and strengthening unity within the House.

“I pledge to uphold the confidence reposed in me, strengthen the unity of the House and work in harmony with the executive arm of government for the development of Kebbi State,” Dangoje said.

He also extended condolences to the family of the late Speaker, Muhammad Usman Zuru, the people of Zuru Emirate and residents of the state over the loss.

Dangoje, who hails from Kebbi South Senatorial District, has served in the Assembly for about 11 years and previously chaired the House Committee on Information.

The new Speaker pledged to work closely with lawmakers and other stakeholders to strengthen the legislature and promote good governance in the state.

His emergence fills the leadership vacuum created by the death of Zuru, who led the Assembly until his demise earlier this year.

Delta govt threatens to prosecute illegal revenue collectors

The Delta State Internal Revenue Service, (DSIRS), has threatened to prosecute individuals and groups engage in roadblocks and revenue collection on roads and highways across Delta state.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the Executive Chairman of DSIRS, Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata, reiterated that the ban on such remains in force.

He expressed concern over the continued blockage of roads and highways by unauthorized persons who exploit members of the public under the guise of collecting revenue on behalf of the state government.

He also clarified that DSIRS has not appointed, approved, or renewed the engagement of any road tax consultants, agents, or private revenue collectors for the 2026 fiscal year.

According to him, “Unauthorized individuals, unions, associations, and even agents of local government councils, sometimes acting in collusion with unscrupulous police officers, have continued to mount illegal roadblocks, erect toll barriers, and harass motorists under the guise of collecting revenue, emblems, or levies on public highways across the state. Such persons shall henceforth face the full wrath of the law.”

The DSIRS chairman stressed that the collection of taxes, levies, or revenues on public roads is prohibited under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, NTAA, 2025, the Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Act,Comments

Ighrakpata emphasized that no ministry, department, or agency, MDA, local government council, association, or group has the authority to stop vehicles or impede the movement of persons and goods for revenue collection purposes anywhere in Delta State.

“For the avoidance of doubt, DSIRS has not appointed any haulage or road tax consultants for the 2026 fiscal year. Any individual or corporate body parading itself as a consultant or revenue agent of the service is doing so fraudulently and should be arrested and prosecuted,” he stated.

Ighrakpata explained that all issues relating to tax administration, consultancy engagements, and operational structures have been frozen pending the enactment and official release of the proposed Delta State Revenue Law 2026.

The chairman, therefore, advised members of the public, corporate organizations, and local government authorities not to transact any revenue-related business with unauthorized individuals claiming to represent the service.

Ighrakpata further reiterated that all legitimate taxes and levies payable to the Delta state government must be remitted directly into designated government bank accounts through approved electronic payment channels.

The DSIRS boss called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to arrest and investigate anyone found operating illegal checkpoints, demanding road levies, or falsely claiming consultancy status for revenue collection.

“Security agencies are respectfully requested to arrest, detain, and thoroughly investigate any individual or group found blocking highways, demanding road levies, or claiming unauthorized consultancy status to extort taxpayers,” he said.

Ighrakpata added that the service remains committed to prosecuting offenders and urged the judiciary to ensure that suspects are promptly arraigned before courts of competent jurisdiction to serve as a deterrent to others.

He appealed to residents and road users to report any illegal checkpoint, extortion attempt, or suspicious tax consultancy claim to the nearest law enforcement agency or directly to the DSIRS headquarters in Warri.

The IRS Boss reaffirmed the service’s commitment to transparency, compliance with national fiscal regulations, and the protection of Delta State’s business-enabling environment from unlawful disruptions.

“DSIRS remains firmly committed to transparency, compliance with national fiscal frameworks, and protecting Delta State’s business-enabling environment from unlawful disruptions,” the statement added.

Suspected Bandits Massacre 20 In Sokoto Days After Killing 17

Residents of Dan Gulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State have been forced to flee their homes for the second time in less than a week following another attack by armed bandits.

The latest assault occurred on Tuesday, just 48 hours after an earlier attack that reportedly killed 17 residents and visitors who had returned to the village to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with their families.

Witnesses said dozens of gunmen riding motorcycles stormed the community, firing indiscriminately and sending residents running for safety.

Community members claimed that more than 20 people may have been killed in the latest attack, while several houses were set ablaze.

As of Wednesday, many residents were still searching for missing relatives and assessing the damage left behind.

The renewed violence has heightened fears among villagers, many of whom say they no longer feel safe returning home despite the end of the festive period.

“We are living in fear,” one resident said. “People who came home to celebrate Sallah are now either dead, displaced or missing.”

The attacks have also disrupted economic and social activities in the area, with many families abandoning their farms and livelihoods amid growing insecurity.

The incident has triggered renewed calls for stronger security measures across rural communities in Sokoto State.

Reacting to the attack, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, described the recurring violence as a tragedy that demands urgent action from authorities.

Dan’iya, a former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, expressed concern over the repeated targeting of Dan Gulbi within such a short period.

“The continued killing of innocent citizens in Dan Gulbi is heartbreaking and unacceptable,” he said.

He urged security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible and called for improved intelligence gathering, stronger collaboration among security agencies and better protection for vulnerable communities.

Dan’iya also appealed to both the federal and Sokoto State governments to provide additional resources for security operations in the North-West, while encouraging residents to support security agencies with credible information.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns over persistent banditry in parts of Sokoto State, where rural communities continue to face recurring violence, displacement and loss of livelihoods.

For many residents of Dan Gulbi, however, the immediate concern is survival and whether it is safe to return to the homes they fled only days ago.
