FG deploys eight gun trucks to boost fight against illegal mining

As part of efforts to enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals, the Federal Government has procured and deployed eight operational gun trucks to intensify the crackdown on illegal mining across the country.

Babalawe Afolabi, Assistant Commandant of Corps and National Public Relations Officer, NSCDC National Headquarters Abuja, in a statement, said the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, noted that additional state-of-the-art technological equipment and armoured vehicles would be provided once budgetary provisions are secured.

Alake, who was accompanied by the representative of the Minister of Interior, Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin (retd.), expressed satisfaction with the unit’s track record.

He revealed that within just two years of existence, the Mining Marshals have apprehended over 300 illegal miners, prosecuted more than 150 suspects, and secured numerous convictions involving both local and foreign nationals.

According to the minister, the Mining Marshals, a specialised unit carved out of the NSCDC, have significantly contributed to boosting Nigeria’s non-oil revenue, helping diversify the economy away from petroleum dependence.

Alake strongly condemned the attempts by illegal miners and their collaborators to frustrate ongoing national operations, describing them as “saboteurs” and “enemies of the state” who would be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, represented by Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin (retd.) of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), commended the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development for its support.

He emphasised that the collaboration has helped safeguard the nation’s mineral deposits and pledged the Interior Ministry’s full backing for future training, increased funding, and enhanced firepower.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, represented by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Technical Services, DCG Zakari Ibrahim Ningi, described the ministry’s intervention as revolutionary and unprecedented.

While describing illegal mining as a critical menace to national development, the Commandant General assured that the NSCDC would maintain its robust synergy with the ministry, promising that the newly acquired gun trucks would be deployed strictly for their intended purposes.

Nigerian govt outlines measures to reduce current 90% importation of medical equipment in West Africa

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said it has introduced robust federal initiatives aimed at eliminating vulnerabilities in the supply chain and significantly enhancing local manufacturing capabilities in order to address the concerning fact that between 85% and 99% of medical equipment and in vitro diagnostics in West Africa are presently imported.

Dr. Isiaq Adekunle Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, represented President Tinubu and the Federal Government at the 2026 fiscal year of the World Health Expo (WHX) in Lagos, formerly known as Medic West Africa. He made this statement while welcoming over 8,000 healthcare professionals and 500 exhibitors from 40 countries at the event in Lagos State.

He noted that there are significant presidential directives in place, including the Presidential Initiative to Unlock Healthcare Value Chains, PVAC, and the Presidential Executive Order for the Pharmaceutical and Allied Sectors. Both initiatives are designed to enhance health security, stimulate economic growth, and create jobs through strategic collaborations with the private sector and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs).

The Minister emphasized, “Our dedication to enhancing access to modern equipment and technologies in hospitals is supported by tangible actions.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has launched the $1.2 billion Sector-Wide Approach (SWAP) initiative, which is a comprehensive reform addressing financing, workforce development, and infrastructure. Additionally, for the 2025 fiscal year, the Federal Government has allocated N402 billion specifically for investments in health sector infrastructure.”

He mentioned that with Nigeria’s healthcare sector projected to grow by 7.1%, reaching a market value of $161.7 million by 2027, and the overall West African market valued at over $11 billion, there is a significant opportunity for global investors and innovators to engage with this market.

The Minister stated, “Nigeria is open for healthcare investment. We aim for platforms like WHX in Lagos to act as a vital channel for converting this investment ambition into concrete technological advancements.”

Addressing the financial obstacles that hinder the scalability of local health technology, Njide Ndili, President of the Healthcare Federation of Nigeria, HFN, and Country Director of PharmAccess, discussed the importance of HFN in breaking down long-standing barriers to capital.

Ndili stated, “HFN fills the gaps in health financing, establishing essential connections to achieve genuine health sovereignty.

“Access to finance for companies seeking long-term patient capital has been limited. We offer the capacity, platform, and expertise necessary to make healthcare businesses scalable. The critical question we must address is: How can we design products that cater to the Nigerian market, enhance local manufacturing, improve quality, and achieve scalability?”

The Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi, articulated the state government’s vision for health sovereignty, identifying its fundamental pillars as affordability and sustainability.

Prof. Abayomi highlighted the implementation of the National Health Insurance Authority, NHIA, Act in Lagos State as a significant regulatory achievement, noting that the Act requires health insurance for all residents, thereby structuring the financial landscape to ensure medical protection across diverse socioeconomic strata.

“This initiative positions the healthcare sector at the heart of the economy,” Prof. Abayomi asserted. “The government must establish the standards and trust necessary to create a conducive environment for both demand and supply.”

In his keynote address, Prof. Aliko Ahmed, Special Regional Representative of the Director General of the Africa CDC Western Regional Coordinating Centre, reflected on the insights gained from the Ebola and COVID-19 crises.

He noted that while these pandemics exposed severe vulnerabilities, they also revealed massive opportunities for Nigeria and Africa within the global health architecture.

Following her remarks, many users including celebrities took to social media to call the singer out and criticize her for not being realistic, insisting that insecurity requires decisive government action rather than religious appeals.

Reacting to backlash, the singer in a new video on Wednesday, tendered a public apology to Nigerians

“Good day everyone, I did a video of about 1 and half hour two days ago, praying for the kidnapped children, grieving families, government parastatal, the military, Nigeria land, and everybody in pain. But when I woke up yesterday I discovered that some well meaning Nigerians are feeling offended because I made them feel unseen or their voices unheard.

“You know me too well that I will never make anybody feel like that. I discovered that the trending video was cut out of the video I made. Mothers, please don’t be angry with me. I begged you in the name of Jesus Christ, you will never bury your children. I beg you in God’s name, please forgive me if I ever speak as if I’m insensitive”, she said.

NPFL: Short-term signings hindering clubs performance in Africa – Zubair

Former Flying Eagles tactician, Aliyu Zubair, has identified major factors hindering Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clubs from progressing beyond the group stage of continental competitions.

Zubair said NPFL clubs would continue to struggle in these competitions unless they abandon the culture of short-term player recruitment.

He pointed out that clubs aiming to compete successfully on the continent must retain a core group of players for a longer period.

Zubair stressed that this approach would help build cohesion and understanding within the team.

“We will continue to struggle in continental competitions unless we change our orientation towards short-term signings,” Zubair told Kwara SWAN’s Sports Hard Talk programme on Wednesday.

“In other African clubs, players are signed for three to four seasons, giving them the opportunity to play together for a long period.

“This gives them an advantage over clubs here in Nigeria.”

Rivers United and Rangers will participate in the CAF Champions League next season, while Shooting Stars and the winner of the 2026 President Federation Cup will play in the CAF Confederation Cup.
