The FCT Police Command has denied media reports over alleged kidnapping of students at Phase 1 Primary School, Gbagalape, Abuja today June 4.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said at about 10:30am, officers of the FCT Police Command attached to Nyanya Division received a distress call alleging an ongoing kidnapping incident at Phase 1 Primary School, Gbagalape, Abuja. Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Nyanya Division, immediately mobilized officers and surveillance teams to the scene.

Adeh stated that preliminary investigations revealed that students had suddenly started shouting “k!dnappers” and running out of the school premises, creating panic among teachers and members of the community. Consequently, the school premises were cordoned off and thoroughly searched by responding officers.

She said following extensive search and questioning of persons within and around the school premises, no k!dnapping incident was established, no suspect was sighted, and no victim was identified. She mentioned that additionally, surrounding hills, boundaries, and adjoining areas were patrolled and searched, while nearby schools were also visited as part of precautionary security measures.

She urged members of the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension within communities.

The management of Lagos State University, LASU, has announced the death of one of its students, Boluwatife Joseph Otabor, following injuries he sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.

Otabor, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, reportedly succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after spending several days receiving medical treatment.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr Olaniyi Jeariogbe, the university described the incident as tragic and expressed deep sorrow over the student’s passing.

The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, on behalf of the institution’s management, staff, students and the entire university community, extended condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

According to the university, the attack occurred off-campus on the night of May 29, 2026, when Otabor and some of his friends were reportedly attacked by armed robbers in the Iba area.

The institution disclosed that immediately after receiving information about the incident, it activated support measures through the Office of the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, while keeping the Vice-Chancellor informed of developments.

LASU said it maintained close contact with medical personnel handling the student’s treatment and monitored his condition throughout his period of hospitalisation.

Following confirmation of his death, representatives of the university visited and engaged with members of the student’s family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, as well as relevant law enforcement agencies.

The university added that it is working with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and to facilitate the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

The institution again sympathised with the bereaved family and prayed for the repose of the deceased student’s soul.

“The University condoles with the family and all who knew him and prays that the Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement said.

LASU student dies after armed robbery attack in Lagos

Abia State government says its department of climate change and other relevant agencies have begun proactive measures to protect the state from flooding in 2026.

The State’s Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Ogbonna, who made the plans known on Thursday, said the proactive action was in response to the predictions that Abia could experience abnormal rainfall this year.

He said the local emergency committees across the 17 local government areas of the state have been activated to coordinate responses and minimise the impact of possible flooding.

Ogbonna explained that public enlightenment campaigns have been intensified to ensure that residents are aware of the flood predictions and are adequately prepared for any eventuality.

He noted that the state is collaborating with relevant agencies and civil society organisations to develop emergency response plans, including the preparation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP, camps should the need arise.

Ogbonna urged Abians to remain vigilant and support government efforts by keeping drainages clean and avoiding activities that obstruct the free flow of storm water.

He warned against indiscriminate waste disposal, noting that blocked drainage channels are a major cause of flooding during heavy rainfall.

The commissioner further encouraged residents to sustain the culture of environmental cleanliness, particularly during the rainy season, emphasising that collective action remains essential to reducing the impact of climate change and safeguarding communities across the state.

Abia govt warns residents against possible flooding, reactivates emergency committees

The Oyo State government has assured residents of its preparedness to prevent, detect and respond effectively to any potential threat of Ebola virus disease.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, who made the assurance in a statement on Thursday said, “Although Nigeria has not recorded any case of Ebola virus disease, the state government is closely monitoring developments and had activated necessary preparedness measures to safeguard the health of residents.”

Ajetunmobi, in the statement signed by Commissioner for Information, Prince Oyelade, reiterated Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration’s commitment to protecting the lives and wellbeing of all citizens, stressing that public health security remains a top priority of the government.

“Disease surveillance activities have been strengthened across 33 local government areas of the state, while health facilities have been placed on heightened alert. Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers, Rapid Response Teams, laboratories, and other critical response structures had been mobilised and positioned for prompt action, should the need arise,” she said.

The commissioner further revealed that the Ebola Virus Disease Technical Working Group had been activated, while all critical preparedness pillars had been strengthened to ensure the state remains fully prepared for any eventuality.

She also called on healthcare workers, public and private health facilities, traditional and religious leaders, community stakeholders, and residents to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspected case presenting with symptoms such as sudden fever, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea, unexplained bleeding, or a history of travel to affected areas.

She further urged residents to embrace vigilance, preparedness, and collective responsibility in protecting the health and wellbeing of all citizens.

On May 15, Africa’s top public health body confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The disease has killed no fewer than 65 people with hundreds of suspected cases reported.

The National Center for Disease and Control (NCDC) , while noting that there is no confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria, said it has intensified national surveillance and preparedness against cross-border transmission.

Ebola Virus Disease, formerly known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever, is a severe and often fatal illness that affects humans and other primates.

It is transmitted through direct contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected persons, contaminated materials, infected animals, and the bodies of deceased victims during burial rites.

Its symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.

The NCDC has also advised preventive measures to include, regular washing of hands with soap under cleaning running water, avoiding direct contact with sick individuals and their body fluids, seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms develop, and avoiding contact with or consumption of bush meat and wild animals.

The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, has approved the suspension of the Managing Director, Imo State Housing Corporation,IMSHC, Raymond Ucheoma, barely one year in office.

Ucheoma’s suspension was made known through the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Cosmas Iwu, who communicated the new development to him via a letter.

In the letter, Ucheoma was directed to hand over all government property in his custody to the Secretary of the Corporation or the most senior officer with immediate effect.

The letter added that the state government is looking forward to a new Imo Housing Corporation that aligns with the agenda of the present administration in terms of effective service delivery.

The appointment of the former Imo Housing Corporation Managing Director was approved in May 2025, after his retirement serving as Head of Service to the government.
