APC using Police to guard Tinubu’s billboards rather than protect Nigerians – Atiku aide

Demola Olarewaju, an aide to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, 2027 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress, APC, prefers to deploy police officers to protect President Bola Tinubu’s billboards rather than use them to safeguard Nigerians.

Olarewaju made the claims while noting that Tinubu’s stance of politics of power and not policy should not be allowed again by Nigerians.

He was reacting to a post on social media that the “Edo State Government allegedly deployed police officers to protect Tinubu’s campaign billboards from vandals, around Ring Road. Locals say the officers take shifts in guiding the billboards.”

Posting on X, Olarewaju wrote: “APC will rather use police officers to guard Tinubu’s campaign billboards and fortify themselves than deploy them to protect Nigerians.

“Tinubu’s belief in politics for the sake of power and not policy is a mistake that must not be allowed to happen again in 2027.”

  • 131 Nigerian Firms Secure Africa Quality Mark, Gain Continental Access

131 Nigerian Firms Secure Africa Quality Mark, Gain Continental Access

No fewer than 131 Nigerian companies have secured the Africa Quality Mark (AQM), a continental certification that gives their products wider acceptance across African markets and positions them to take advantage of opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The certification, presented at a ceremony in Abuja attended by government officials, industry stakeholders and representatives of the African Organisation for Standardization (ARSO), is expected to boost the competitiveness of Nigerian products, reduce technical barriers to trade and enhance the country’s export prospects across the continent.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, said the recognition of the companies was evidence that products made in Nigeria could meet continental standards and compete successfully across borders.

Oduwole said the certification went beyond a mere quality assessment exercise, describing it as a reflection of the emergence of a stronger culture of quality, competitiveness and industrialisation in Nigeria.

According to her, the achievement underscores the resilience, innovation and determination of Nigerian manufacturers who continue to improve standards and strengthen the country’s industrial base despite prevailing economic challenges.

She said the Federal Government remained committed to implementing policies that support industrial expansion, export growth and local value addition in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“We are creating an enabling environment that drives investment, innovation and sustainable economic growth. Our vision is clear: Nigeria must transition from a consumption-driven economy to a leading production and export hub for Africa,” she said.

The minister noted that as implementation of the AfCFTA gathers momentum, African countries must move beyond fragmented markets towards a more integrated and competitive continental economy.

She stressed, however, that access to markets alone would not guarantee success, saying businesses must be able to produce goods that inspire confidence and satisfy quality requirements across borders.

“Quality is no longer a competitive advantage; it is a necessity. Consumers and trading partners increasingly demand products that meet stringent standards of safety, reliability and performance,” she said.

Oduwole explained that the Africa Quality Mark, developed under the African Organisation for Standardization, serves as a powerful symbol of trust by assuring consumers that certified products meet harmonised African standards.

She described the certification as a passport to expanded market access and greater acceptance across the continent, adding that companies that have earned the mark now have an opportunity to significantly increase their production and exports.

While congratulating the award recipients, the minister urged them not to see the recognition as a final destination but as a foundation for greater accomplishments.

“You are now ambassadors of quality. The responsibility rests on you to sustain these standards and inspire others to follow. With this certification, the market is now wider for you. To meet both domestic and export demand, you must produce more and scale up your operations,” she said.

She also called for accelerated efforts to align Nigerian standards with African standards in order to enable more products to qualify for certification and gain easier access to regional markets.

Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, described the certification programme as a major milestone in the country’s drive to improve product quality and enhance export competitiveness.

He said harmonised standards have become increasingly important as African countries seek to deepen economic integration through the AfCFTA.

According to him, the existence of different standards and certification requirements across countries often creates obstacles for manufacturers seeking to export their products.

He noted that the Africa Quality Mark addresses this challenge by providing a unified framework for production, quality assurance and market acceptance.

“What this means is that the companies receiving the Africa Quality Mark today are no longer limited to the Nigerian market. They now have access to the broader African market. We now have one standard, one market and a common framework for quality assessment,” Okeke said.

He added that SON would continue to support manufacturers through standards development, factory inspections, product testing, certification and market surveillance activities aimed at improving quality and industrial competitiveness.

The SON boss said the agency was also intensifying awareness campaigns to encourage more manufacturers to embrace harmonised African standards as a strategic requirement for export readiness.

Also speaking, Secretary-General of the African Organisation for Standardization, Dr. Hermogene Nsengimana, said standards play a critical role in making continental trade agreements effective.

He argued that the signing of trade agreements alone would not automatically guarantee increased trade among African countries.

According to him, countries and consumers must be confident that imported products are safe and meet agreed quality specifications before they can gain acceptance in new markets.

“The first issue is safety. If you are accepting products from another country, you need to be sure they are safe for your people. Standards provide those specifications. The second issue is trade. You must conform not only to your country’s standards but also to the expectations of buyers across Africa,” he said.

Nsengimana noted that products carrying the Africa Quality Mark enjoy greater credibility because the standards were developed collectively by experts from different African countries.

He said the certification effectively opens a market of over 1.4 billion people to qualifying companies and provides them with opportunities to compete at a continental level.

The ARSO chief commended Nigeria for its commitment to standardisation and product certification, noting that the country currently has one of the highest numbers of certified products on the continent.

He encouraged more Nigerian manufacturers to embrace quality standards and certification as a pathway to growth, competitiveness and sustainable participation in intra-African trade.

The event ended with the presentation of Africa Quality Mark certificates to the successful companies, marking another step in Nigeria’s efforts to position itself as a leading industrial and export hub on the continent.

  • Ebola Burial Team Attacked, 11 Patients Flee Isolation In Congo

Ebola Burial Team Attacked, 11 Patients Flee Isolation In Congo

An Ebola burial team has been attacked in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and 11 patients have fled isolation facilities, as the outbreak continues to spread to new areas of the country’s hardest-hit province.

A team attempting to safely bury an Ebola victim was assaulted in the South Kivu town of Katana, forcing workers to abandon the coffin and allowing community members to handle the body, an incident health officials warned could spark new chains of transmission.

Health workers have registered more than 900 suspected cases of Ebola and 220 suspected deaths, though real figures are likely much higher as the outbreak went undetected for some time before the Congolese government declared it on 15 May. Neighbouring Uganda has also registered seven confirmed cases.

Efforts to contain the outbreak are being hampered by several operational gaps, including delays in early case detection, incomplete contact tracing, unsafe burial practices and weak infection prevention systems within healthcare facilities.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there is no approved medicine or vaccine.

Initial containment efforts are taking place in a highly unstable part of eastern Congo, where conflict involving armed groups such as the ADF, CODECO and the Rwanda-backed M23 has long restricted humanitarian access.

Fighting and restrictions by armed groups have obstructed aid operations, curtailed civilian movement and limited access to essential services.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has warned that the outbreak risks becoming the deadliest on record without urgent international action, as it is now spreading faster than responders can contain it.

Protest as court remands Hammed Tajudeen for another 10 days

A Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos and presided by Justice L. A. Owolabi has again ordered the remand of Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi, popularly known as Hammed Ajiran, for another 10 days following the failure of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, DPP to render its legal advice as earlier directed by the court.

DAILY POST recalls that Alhaji Hammed was earlier arraigned before Mr Owolabi of  Court 3, Ogba, Lagos on May 22, 2026 on charges bordering on conspiracy to commit murder, membership of an unlawful society, threat of violence, assault, and other related offenses, charges which Alhaji Hammed pleaded not guilty on all counts.

At the commencement of proceedings, the lead counsel to the defendant, Adedotun Ajulo, Esq. presented a Summons for Bail applied on behalf of his client.

However, the court declined the application, citing the need for supplementary legal advice from the DPP in view of fresh facts and evidence that allegedly emerged from subsequent investigations conducted by the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti.

At the last adjourned sitting, the court had directed the DPP to file its legal advice within 10 days.

However, when the matter came up on Thursday, 4 June 2026, it was learnt that the DPP’s Advice was yet to be rendered.

During the proceedings on Thursday, counsel to the Defendant, A. O. Ajulo, Esq. informed the court that he had filed a bail application on behalf of his client, who collapsed after the proceedings of 22 May 2026 and has been receiving medical treatment at a police medical facility.

While addressing the Court, the Police prosecutor, A. O. Nwabuisi, Esq. confirmed that the Police had complied with the earlier Order of Court by dispatching the Defendant’s duplicate case file to the DPP.

MrNwabuisi also confirmed to the Court that the Defendant has been receiving medical treatment at the Police facility and left the bail to the discretion of the Court.

Although Ms. A. Munir who represented the DPP confirmed that the DPP is in receipt of the duplicate case file, she informed the court that the DPP’s advice is not ready but undertook that the said advice will be ready before the next adjourned date.

She also informed the court that the DPP will study the Defendant’s bail application and respond before the next adjourned date.

Mr Ajulo urged the court to allow the suspect remain in police custody pending the short adjournment period.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter for another 10 days and ordered that the defendant remain in custody pending the DPP’s advice and that he be returned to the SCID panti until the next adjourned date.

In a dramatic turn of events, members of the Ajiran community gathered at the court premises in a show of solidarity for Hammed Akanbi.

The supporters displayed banners and placards calling for his release and insisting on his innocence.

According to a viral video clip, the protesters alleged that the prosecution of Hammed is connected to an ongoing land dispute rather than a genuine murder case.

They claimed that certain influential individuals and state actors have vested interests in the community land and are using the criminal process to target the defendant.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, a community representative, Mr Gbenga Gbenga, alleged that members of the community are aware of those behind what he described as the defendant’s current ordeal.

Youths protest in Osun over abducted Oyo school children, teachers

Hundreds of youths and civil society advocates on Thursday staged a peaceful protest in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, demanding the immediate release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire local government area of Oyo State.

The demonstrators marched through major roads in the city, chanting solidarity songs and calling on security agencies and government authorities to intensify efforts to rescue the pupils and their teachers.

They carried placards with inscriptions condemning insecurity, repeatedly shouting, “Release our children now,” and expressing concern over the fate of the abducted victims.

The protesters described the kidnapped children as the future of the nation and warned that persistent attacks on schools posed a serious threat to education and national development.

Speaking during the demonstration, some of the protest leaders urged the Federal Government, state governments, security agencies, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to collaborate in securing the safe return of the victims.

One of the organisers said, “Release our children now, urgent action is required to ensure the abducted pupils regain their freedom and return safely to their families.”

The protesters maintained that children should be protected and allowed to pursue their education without fear, noting that attacks on schools undermine public confidence in the country’s security architecture.

They also appealed for immediate intervention from relevant authorities, stating that every additional day in captivity could worsen the trauma experienced by the abducted children and their teachers.

DAILY POST had reported that the Osun State council of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, had earlier in the week embarked on a protest over the kidnapping of school pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

The union, which marched from Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo to the Osun State Secretariat, Abere, had demanded action from the Oyo State and Federal Governments and the immediate rescue of the kidnapped victims to their families.
