Lagos 2027: Agege APC leaders protest in Abuja, reject assembly primary outcome

Some leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State on Friday took their protest to the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, challenging the outcome of the party’s primary election for Agege Constituency I ahead of the 2027 elections.

The group, led by Johnson Kolawole, alleged that the results of the May 20, 2026, primary election were altered to the detriment of Egunjobi Ganiyu Kola, whom they claimed emerged victorious in the exercise but was subsequently denied recognition as the party’s candidate.

Addressing journalists after submitting a petition to the party leadership, the protesters called on the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and members of the National Working Committee, NWC, to review the outcome of the primary.

Kolawole said the delegation comprised the chairmen and secretaries of the five wards that make up Agege Constituency I, as well as the APC chairman and secretary in the local government.

According to him, results collated from the primary election showed that Egunjobi secured 9,132 votes out of the 10,126 votes cast across the constituency’s five wards. He added that another aspirant, Oladipo Tunde Shola, polled 560 votes, while Oluwagbenga Michael Abiola received 434 votes.

The protesters maintained that Egunjobi was duly screened, cleared to contest, and officially declared the winner by the returning officer, Hon. Kayode Kassim Eleshin, at the conclusion of the exercise.

Kolawole further claimed that the primary election was monitored by APC officials, observers from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, security agencies, journalists and other stakeholders, describing the process as peaceful, transparent and credible.

However, he expressed concern over the subsequent publication of Oluwagbenga Michael Abiola as the APC candidate for Agege Constituency I in a newspaper report dated May 25, 2026.

According to him, the published outcome was inconsistent with the results announced at the primary election.

“We respectfully urge the National Working Committee and all relevant organs and committees of our great party to uphold the authentic result as declared by the Returning Officer and formally recognise Egunjobi Ganiyu Kola as the duly elected APC candidate for Lagos State House of Assembly, Agege Constituency I,” Kolawole stated.

He added that the group was prepared to submit documentary evidence, video recordings from the five wards, as well as reports from election observers and security agencies to support its claims.

The protesters also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC leadership to intervene and ensure that what they described as the genuine mandate of party members in the constituency is respected and protected.

Banditry: Monarch Urges Communities To Obtain Arms For Self-Defence

The Emir of Argungu, Muhammad Mera, has urged communities within his emirate to legally acquire weapons for self-defence amid persistent attacks by bandits and other criminal groups.

The monarch made the call during a meeting with district heads, village heads and ward heads at his palace in Argungu, where he stressed the need for communities to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect themselves.

According to the emir, residents should consider pooling resources to purchase legally approved weapons and strengthen local security arrangements in collaboration with relevant authorities.

He said communities that possess lawful means of self-defence could discourage attacks by making criminals aware that residents are capable of protecting themselves.

“If you acquire such weapons legally, make sure the bandits know that your community has the means to defend itself. This alone can serve as a deterrent,” he said.

The traditional ruler argued that people should not remain defenceless in the face of violence, kidnappings and other criminal activities.

“It is not right for people to remain passive while criminals kill, kidnap and terrorise innocent citizens. Communities should be prepared to defend themselves, their families and their property against attacks,” he stated.

Mera lamented that many rural communities have become vulnerable because they lack adequate means of self-defence, noting that residents often flee whenever bandits invade their villages.

He, however, clarified that his remarks should not be interpreted as support for vigilantism, terrorism or any form of unlawful violence.

The emir emphasized that he was advocating lawful self-defence and community vigilance, particularly as security agencies continue to face significant challenges in addressing insecurity across affected areas.

He warned against revenge attacks, ethnic violence and extrajudicial killings, stressing that such actions only fuel further cycles of conflict and retaliation.

According to him, communities should avoid targeting innocent people in response to attacks carried out by criminal elements.

The traditional ruler also claimed that although many members of the Lakurawa group had reportedly left the area, armed bandits linked to the group and their collaborators continue to pose a threat to local communities.

He called on residents across the Argungu Emirate to cooperate with security agencies, remain alert to suspicious activities and uphold peace and the rule of law in their communities.

The emir maintained that collective vigilance, lawful self-defence measures and stronger collaboration with security authorities are essential to addressing the growing security challenges facing the region.

Police warn against dangerous roller skating on Kano highways, restricted areas

The Kano State Police Command has warned residents, especially young people, against the growing practice of roller skating on highways, bridges, road construction sites and other restricted areas across Kano metropolis.

The warning was issued in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on Friday.

The command said it had observed with concern the increasing cases of juveniles skating on major roads and even holding onto moving vehicles for speed and excitement, describing the trend as dangerous and life-threatening.

It noted that while roller skating is a recreational activity, using it on busy highways exposes both skaters and other road users to serious accidents.

The Police explained that major roads are designed for vehicles, not recreational activities, adding that skaters have limited control or stopping ability in fast-moving traffic conditions.

“Major roads are designed for vehicular movement, and roller skates offer limited control and braking, making collisions with cars and trucks highly likely,” the statement said.

The Police also expressed concern that many roads and bridges currently under construction do not have dedicated lanes for skating or similar activities, making such practices even more dangerous.

It further warned against what it described as reckless behaviour among some youths who latch onto moving vehicles for thrill-seeking, saying such acts have already led to fatal accidents in other parts of the country.

The command stated that parents, guardians, school authorities and community leaders must take responsibility by cautioning children and wards against engaging in such risky behaviour.

“Parents, guardians, schools, and community leaders are strongly advised to caution their children and wards against this dangerous practice,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police warned that the Command would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found obstructing traffic, endangering public safety or engaging in activities capable of causing harm to themselves or others.

He urged residents to report any cases of reckless skating to the nearest police station or through emergency contact lines for immediate response.

African champions Super Falcons edged past Senegal 2-1 in their international friendly at the Remo Stars Sports Complex, Ikenne on Friday.

The hosts took control of the game from the first minute but had to wait until around the half-hour mark before scoring the curtain raiser.

Former African Women’s Footballer of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, coolly converted from the spot in the 32nd minute.

Everton midfielder Toni Payne doubled Nigeria’s lead four minutes before the break.

Payne slotted the ball home superbly from a wonderful pass from right-back Shukurat Oladipo.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was denied just before the break by the Senegalese goalkeeper.

The tempo of the game slowed after the break as Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu made a number of changes.

Oshoala and Folashade Ijamilusi had Nigeria’s best chances of the second half.

Sokhna Nogaye reduced the deficit for Senegal with a long-range effort four minutes from time.

Nigeria and Senegal will clash in the second friendly next week Monday, also in Ikenne.

UK tightens immigration rules, may ban Nigerian students, others

The United Kingdom has introduced tougher immigration rules that could see universities lose the right to recruit international students, including Nigerians, if they fail to meet new compliance standards.

The UK Home Office said this in a statement on Friday, stressing that the reforms aim to reduce visa system abuse linked to study, work, and tourist routes connected to rising asylum claims.

According to the Home Office, under the new rule, universities risk losing their sponsorship licence if more than 5% of student visa applications are refused, down from the previous 10% threshold.

It noted that institutions would also be judged on performance, including a 95% enrolment rate and 90% course completion rate, compared to earlier targets of 90% and 85%.

The Home Office reiterated that failure to meet these standards could lead to sanctions, including losing the ability to admit foreign students.

“High drop-out rates can indicate students have entered the illegal working economy rather than studying whilst, high visa rejection rates or low enrolment figures suggest some institutions have not done enough due diligence on applicants,” the Home Office said

The policy follows earlier restrictions on study visa applicants from countries including Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan.

The government also said asylum claims from international students have dropped by 30% following stricter enforcement.

About 306,000 students with expiring visas have been warned to leave the UK or face removal if they submit unfounded asylum claims.

  • Osun APC issues are minor, Omisore will not leave — Adegoke

Osun APC issues are minor, Omisore will not leave — Adegoke

The All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District, Kunle Rasheed Adegoke, has dismissed speculation surrounding the political future of former Osun State Deputy Governor and ex-national secretary of the APC, Senator Iyiola Omisore, saying he was convinced the veteran politician would remain in the party.

Adegoke made the remarks  Friday while featuring on the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun State Council Guest Platform, where he addressed questions on the state of the APC and preparations for future elections.

“Senator Iyiola Omisore will not move away from the APC. He is a wise politician, and I respect his sense of politicking. He won’t go that way,” he said.

Adegoke argued that the APC remained firmly rooted in the Osun East Senatorial District, making it unlikely that Omisore’s supporters would consider leaving the party.

“If you note, the whole of Osun East Senatorial District is with the APC. I am sure none of Omisore’s followers will want to leave where they are comfortable for another party,” he said.

Adegoke also dismissed concerns over internal disagreements within the party, describing them as minor issues that will not affect its electoral prospects.

According to him, “disagreements are not peculiar to the APC. Every political party experiences internal disputes from time to time.

“In every political party, there would be disagreement. We have our own fair share of internal disputes, but it is manageable.”

He stated that members expressing dissatisfaction with the party were merely giving advance notice of their concerns and would continue to be engaged by the leadership.

“People resigning are only giving us advance notice. They will still be engaged. The party, as we are, is already discussing the sources of their concerns,” he added.

The APC chieftain contrasted his party’s situation with that of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which he claimed was no longer a formidable force in Osun State.

“Unlike other parties, like the PDP, which is not on the ground anymore, they have all dissolved into Accord,” he said.

Adegoke expressed confidence in the APC’s chances of success, arguing that the opposition had failed to manage its internal affairs effectively.

“Our chances of success are confident. The PDP could not manage its own party, and they want to win the state. The people who assisted them to win the 2022 election are now in the APC,” he said.

He maintained that the disagreements within the APC were insignificant and would not undermine the party’s electoral fortunes.

“Our internal disagreements are minor and minute, and they will not affect our chances,” Adegoke stated.

Gender Commission rescues 8 underage children, detains 3 traffickers in bust of Jos illegal park

The Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, has rescued eight underage children and arrested 3 suspected traffickers following the discovery of an illegal trafficking motor park operating at Zawan Junction, Jos South LGA of the State.

The Chairperson of the Commission made the disclosure while addressing journalists in Jos, the State Capital on Friday.

Dazyam said she was alerted about the existence of the park and wanted to find out about it.

“The reliable informant told us that the park is located at Zawan junction, Jos South LGA of the State, and she gave me the information that the park operates only on Thursdays and Tuesdays.”

“On Thursdays, they would convey passengers to a location called Sapeteri in Ibadan, Oyo State and according to him, after Thursday, the park won’t operate again until Tuesday.

“They will now bring back some people, to that park from Ibadan, and drop them there, so I actually got worried”, she explained.

“Together with my colleagues from the Commission, we quickly drove to that area, and we actually saw five vehicles there that were loading, getting ready to travel, and apparently a night journey or something, and I quickly wanted to find out about the legitimacy of that park.”

“In the first instance, of course, it didn’t look like a park to start with, only a pack to the extent that there were vehicles there, and there were persons who looked like passengers.

“Again, I didn’t like the sight of some of the people that I saw there. Some looked like miners, and I also saw young ladies there who were also about to travel.”

“We quickly called on the Commissioner, Ministry of Transport, to find out from him whether he’s aware of that park and whether the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers were also aware of that, and to my amazement, that is an illegal park.

“I’m happy with the kind of working relationship that we have with the Commissioner, Ministry of Transport, and the attention of the security was quickly drawn to it, and you know, as I speak now, the police is investigating.

Dazyam expressed concern over the years of silence on such abuses, saying, “it would appear that probably, as a result of silence, that we have kept about a lot of things, negative things are happening to us, it has been encouraged, in one way or the other, the continuity of the abuses against us.

According to her, “I’m told that this is a park that has been operating for up to almost 10 years in, I mean, in Zawan Junction, Jos South LGA.”

She said preliminary investigation showed the children were being recruited for mining labour.

“We have discovered that some of them are young children, you know, persons below 18 years who are about to travel.

“We were told that there is a mining pond, where mining activities are going on in some communities, I think about three communities in Ibadan, where these people are being recruited to go and serve as labourers.”

She added that, “this is a journey that some people organised, and they are the ones who are in charge of the transportation.

“All of them were to be transported, they are not the ones to pay the transport fare, it is when they arrive, probably they are able to deliver them in Ibadan in the mining communities before they pay them.”

“We were able to rescue 8 underage children, 3 young females who are married to some of the miners, two of the women are even pregnant, and three of the traffickers are here with us.”

  • EPL: When Guardiola says he’s quitting, you can’t take it seriously – Man City Chairman

EPL: When Guardiola says he’s quitting, you can’t take it seriously – Man City Chairman

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has confirmed that Pep Guardiola sought to resign from the club multiple times before his eventual exit following the 2025/26 season.

Guardiola concluded his decade-long tenure at Manchester City after failing to clinch the Premier League title against Arsenal in the 2025/26 season. He departed as the most successful manager in the club’s history.

Chairman Al Mubarak remarked that the Catalan coach had threatened to leave on numerous occasions throughout his ten years with the club.

He stated via GOAL, “Inevitably, we have experienced many highs and lows, and during the lows, he must have threatened to quit a hundred times over these ten years,” Al Mubarak revealed.

“There is a well-known story, The Boy Who Cried Wolf. In Pep’s case, when he claims he is quitting, it does not necessarily indicate he is actually leaving. You cannot take it too seriously – he requires management.”

Al Mubarak further discussed the relationship he shares with Guardiola and how he has been able to convince him to stay at Manchester City whenever he expressed a wish to leave.

“He is more than just the manager of the club,” Al Mubarak expressed. “To me, he is a friend. Over the years, we have forged a close friendship, and while he may not acknowledge it, I consider myself his psychiatrist. Throughout these years, I have consistently fought to retain him and have always brought him back because I recognised that was the solution.”

When asked about who would take over from Guardiola, Al Mubarak encouraged fans to be patient and to trust the club as they evaluate their options.

“Please be patient with us. We will announce the successor very soon, and you can be assured that we have selected and secured the best possible manager.”
