Nigeria has huge market for electric vehicles – Transport expert, Oyeyemi

An expert in logistics and transportation businesses, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has disclosed that Nigeria has a huge market for Electric Vehicles.

He said this during an interaction with journalists, noting that investors in that sector will not regret it.

Oyeyemi, who is a former Federal Road Safety Corps Marshal, posited that Nigeria remains “one of the largest automotive markets in Africa.

He disclosed further that there are vast opportunities in the assembly, components sales, and aftermarket services in the sector.

He spoke during a conference call in Calabar about the many benefits of electric vehicles to Nigerians as well as the attendant socioeconomic impacts they could have in the country.

Oyeyemi urged the federal government to adopt a long-term auto policy that focuses on “local value creation” instead of frequent policy changes.

Remarking on the 30th Anniversary of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, CILT, Oyeyemi urged Nigeria to stop “wasting time in the development of policy that changes with every administration, as it adds little or no value to the economy.

Oyeyemi urged the federal government to adopt a long-term auto policy for local value creation, pointing out that South Africa, Morocco, and Ethiopia have become models in the Motoring World.

He lamented that Nigeria is “still losing many lives with many families still being destroyed by crashes that could have been prevented had an auto policy been in place.

NDC House of Reps aspirant urges Tinubu to declare national emergency over insecurity

A House of Representatives aspirant under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a national emergency on insecurity.

He warned that the rise in killings, kidnappings, terrorist attacks and assaults on schools poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s stability.

In a statement issued in Awka, Anambra State, on Friday, Klinsmann said the worsening security situation across the country requires urgent and coordinated action from all levels of government.

He argued that the frequent attacks on communities, highways, farms, places of worship and educational institutions show that Nigeria is facing a national crisis rather than isolated security incidents.

“The soul of our nation bleeds. I can no longer remain silent in the face of the unrelenting assault on our people, especially our innocent children,” he said.

Klinsmann expressed particular concern over recent attacks on schools, saying the safety of children and teachers must become a top national priority.

“When children can no longer learn in safety and teachers become targets of criminal violence, then the very future of the nation is under attack. No responsible government should tolerate a situation where classrooms become theatres of fear and insecurity,” he stated.

According to him, insecurity is also hurting the economy by forcing farmers off their lands, discouraging investment, disrupting businesses and displacing families.

He said many Nigerians, especially those in rural communities, increasingly feel abandoned due to repeated attacks and what they perceive as inadequate responses from security agencies.

“This insecurity is a direct threat to Nigeria’s democracy, unity and future. It undermines the social contract between the government and the governed,” Klinsmann said.

The NDC aspirant blamed the security crisis on weak leadership, poor intelligence gathering, inadequate coordination among security agencies, corruption and insufficient use of technology.

While acknowledging the efforts of security personnel, he called for better funding, equipment and support for the military, police and other security agencies.

Klinsmann urged the federal government to immediately declare a national emergency on insecurity, strengthen intelligence networks, deploy modern surveillance technology and improve the protection of schools and vulnerable communities.

He also called for greater transparency in defence spending and advocated investment in agriculture, youth employment, skills development and social protection programmes to address the root causes of insecurity.

As a House of Representatives hopeful for Anaocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency, Klinsmann pledged to support laws aimed at strengthening national security institutions and improving oversight of public spending.

He urged Nigerians to demand accountability from leaders and work together to tackle insecurity through democratic and peaceful means.

Bahrain Withdraws From Hosting ITTF World Championship Over Safety Concerns

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) on Friday announced that the World Youth Championships will now be held in Istanbul instead of Bahrain from November 21-28.

The Bahrain Table Tennis Association chose to withdraw to prioritise the safety and well-being of all athletes, officials and delegations participating in the event as the war rages on in West Asia.

Türkiye, which is now tasked with hosting the ITTF world title event, will be doing so for the first time. The competition will bring together the world’s best junior talent across Under-19 and U-15 categories.

The Ata Sporları Merkezi, having previously hosted WTT events, has been finalised as the venue. This will also give an opportunity for Turkish organisers to test their delivery ahead of the fourth edition of the European Games in 2027.

“Hosting the ITTF World Youth Championships is a significant step forward for the Türkiye Table Tennis Federation and a reflection of our continued commitment to growing the game across Türkiye. We have been working hard to develop the sport at every level, and welcoming the world’s best young players to our country is exactly the kind of moment that inspires the next generation,” Kerim Koç, president of the Türkiye Table Tennis Federation, said.

ITTF president Petra Sörling welcomed the announcement, saying, “We are grateful to Bahrain for their understanding and commitment to putting the welfare of our athletes first. Istanbul is a wonderful home for this championship – a city that connects continents and communities, much like table tennis itself.”

Bahrain is currently drawn into the escalating regional conflict and has been targeted by retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Iran, in response to American and Israeli strikes.

Alleged murder: Hammed Akanbi’s lawyers demand proper investigation, alleges bias

The legal team representing Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi, who is facing prosecution over the alleged murders of one Prince Demola Akinloye and Mr Sheriff Salami, has called for a thorough review of the case.

The lawyers alleged that elements within the Nigeria Police Force conducted what they described as a biased investigation.

Adedotun Ajulo, Esq and Damian N Ukpa, Esq, who addressed reporters on Friday, claimed that their client was being subjected to media trials and persecution linked to longstanding disputes within the community.

Although the legal team acknowledged and described the deaths of Akinloye and Salami as tragic, it argued that the incidents had been politicised by interested parties seeking to advance personal interests.

According to the lawyers, Akanbi and several other youths from the Ajiran Community were investigated multiple times by different police formations and other authorities over the incidents, which occurred in 2023 and 2024.

They alleged that the murder allegations resurfaced whenever disputes involving land ownership and chieftaincy matters emerged in the community.

The legal team criticised the role played by some top police officers, stating that legal actions challenging some of the police decisions are currently pending before the courts.

Addressing the ongoing prosecution, the defence team questioned the credibility of alleged confessional statements reportedly made by two suspects.

According to them, the suspects initially denied knowledge of one of the killings and later claimed they were informed by a third party that Akanbi had ordered the murder of Sheriff Salami.

The lawyers said the suspects have since retracted those statements and allegedly claimed they were coerced into implicating Akanbi.

DAILY POST reports that Akanbi was arraigned before a magistrate court on May 22, 2026, on charges including conspiracy to commit murder, membership of an unlawful society and threats of violence.

  • FCT Police Arrest Wanted Ammunition Supplier, Seven Others

FCT Police Arrest Wanted Ammunition Supplier, Seven Others

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested seven suspects linked to kidnapping, armed robbery, murder and the supply of ammunition to terrorists and bandits during separate operations across Abuja and neighbouring states.

The suspects include three alleged kidnappers, two suspects linked to the kidnapping and murder of a 22-year-old man, a wanted ammunition supplier and his sister, who police say is involved in supplying ammunition to criminal groups.

Two suspected one-chance robbers were also arrested during an anti-crime patrol operation.

The arrests were announced by the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi during a briefing on the Command’s recent operations, which also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, mobile phones, knives and other exhibits.

Speaking on the arrest of the suspected kidnappers, Sanusi said the operation followed the circulation of videos on social media showing armed men dressed in military camouflage and displaying assault rifles.

“My attention was drawn to videos circulating on social media depicting four unidentified individuals in possession of AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and walkie-talkies, openly brandishing the weapons in videos and pictures dressed in military camouflage.

“I immediately directed a detailed forensic analysis into the origin of the content and ordered the immediate arrest of all persons connected to the videos and pictures.”

He said digital forensic analysis and intelligence gathering led operatives of the FCT Police VCRU Sector 5 and personnel from Zuba Division to Runji Village in Zuba, where three suspects were arrested on May 25.

The suspects were identified as Umar Babangida, 25; Adamu Yeti, 22; and Yahaya Idris, 24, all residents of Rijana in Kaduna State.

According to police investigations, the suspects had allegedly obtained the rifle from a gang leader identified as “Esco”, who remains at large.

Investigators also reportedly recovered videos and photographs from the suspects’ phones showing them dressed in military camouflage while carrying rifles and walkie-talkies.

Sanusi said one AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition, eight mobile phones, two jackknives, power banks and other incriminating materials were recovered from the suspects.

He noted that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the alleged gang leader and recover additional weapons.

On the murder investigation, Sanusi said operatives began tracking suspects after a complaint was lodged at the Apo Divisional Headquarters concerning the disappearance of Emmanuel Chukwuemeka, 22, who had been missing since April 21.

Working with the Benue State Police Command, Sanuai said officers arrested Emmanuel Acha Leku, 32, a Cameroonian national, alongside his girlfriend, Kazan Vincent, in Adikpo, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.

Investigations revealed that Leku allegedly accused the deceased of withholding proceeds from a fraudulent scheme in which they were involved.

She said the suspect allegedly lured the victim to a mountainous area in Lokogoma, killed him and later demanded a ransom of N5m from family members using the deceased’s phone in an attempt to disguise the crime as a kidnapping.

Further investigations showed that the suspect fled to Benue State after the incident and was allegedly planning to escape to Cameroon before his arrest.

He also recovered two mobile phones from the suspect, including one belonging to the deceased.

The Command added that it had traced and recovered the decomposing remains of the victim, which have been deposited at Sahad Hospital, Apo, for autopsy.

In another operation, police arrested Yau Sule, a suspected ammunition supplier who had been wanted by the Command since 2023.

He was apprehended on June 2 while travelling along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway.

Providing further details, Sanusi said officers recovered 81 rounds of 7.62mm live AK-47 ammunition and 100 rounds of 7.62mm belted ammunition intended for a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG).

Police said the suspect subsequently led operatives to the arrest of his sister, Maria Sule, whom investigators accused of assisting in the supply of ammunition to terrorists and bandits.

The Command alleged that Maria is married to Buhari Shuaibu, a wanted bandit accused of terrorising communities in the FCT, Kaduna and Niger states.

Preliminary investigations linked the suspects to a network supplying logistics and ammunition to armed groups operating across parts of North-Central Nigeria and border communities around the FCT.

Meanwhile, operatives attached to the Violent Crime Response Unit arrested two suspected one-chance robbers after responding to a distress call from a female victim along the Giri-Lugbe Road on May 15.

Police said the victim reported that she had been robbed and abandoned by the suspects.

A swift chase led to the interception of a Volkswagen Golf vehicle carrying Muhammed Muhammed, 22, and Muhammed Saidu, 20.

Items recovered from the vehicle included a laptop, an iPhone, a laptop charger, two knives and a pair of scissors.

The Command noted that investigations into the various cases were ongoing and urged residents to continue providing useful information to security agencies to support crime-fighting efforts.
