I switch parties because I don’t play transactional politics – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has defended his movement across political parties, insisting his decisions were driven by principle rather than personal ambition.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Tv, Obi said his political journey, from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and later to the Labour Party, was shaped by his refusal to tolerate internal crises and “transactional politics.”

“We must dismantle this criminality that exists today,” Obi said, stressing that his political engagements are rooted in reforming governance and strengthening democratic values.

Responding to concerns about his frequent party changes, Obi explained that his exit from APGA was to prevent internal disputes from destabilising governance in Anambra State.

“I moved from APGA to the PDP because of issues with my successor. Rather than allow it to become destructive to governance, I moved out,” he stated.

He further criticised practices within the PDP, describing them as inconsistent with his principles.

“People were not playing by the rules. It was transactional. I cannot be part of a transactional system,” he said.

Obi also addressed developments within the Labour Party, noting that internal conflicts and legal disputes contributed to instability within the platform.

Despite aligning with figures across political divides, including those now associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi maintained that the focus should be on present commitments rather than past affiliations.

“What is important is not what people were yesterday, but what they are today,” he said.

He acknowledged public scepticism but insisted that ongoing political realignments are part of a broader effort to rebuild a credible opposition capable of delivering accountable leadership.

“We are ready to work with people who are committed to change. If the process is compromised again, we will continue the fight,” Obi added.

The remarks come amid heightened political activity and shifting alliances ahead of future elections, with opposition figures seeking to consolidate forces and present a unified front against entrenched political structures.

Ogun 2027: Gov Abiodun announces Adeola as APC consensus pick

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship election in the state.

Abiodun made the declaration on Monday during a strategic caucus meeting attended by party leaders and stakeholders, where discussions focused on succession planning and preparations ahead of the next election cycle.

In a video clip from the meeting, the governor said the party had already settled on its preferred flag bearer.

“But first, we’ve decided who is deserving as the next flag bearer of our dear state,” Abiodun stated.

Following the announcement, Adeola stood up to loud cheers from supporters, with chants and music filling the venue in a display of endorsement by party faithful.

The governor also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of continuity within the party, referencing previous leadership transitions and urging members to remain united in backing a candidate capable of sustaining the APC’s political dominance in Ogun State.

The meeting, which drew key figures within the party, is being viewed as a major step in shaping the APC’s strategy ahead of the 2027 governorship race. Political observers say the early endorsement could narrow the field of aspirants and consolidate support around Adeola within the party structure.

Adeola, who currently represents Ogun West in the Senate, is a prominent figure within the APC and has long been considered a strong contender in the state’s governorship politics.

I will change the North – Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Peter Obi, has emphasised national unity and grassroots development as key to winning support across Nigeria, dismissing claims that his 2027 ambition depends solely on endorsements from northern political heavyweights.

Speaking in an interview with Arise Tv on Monday, Obi said Nigeria’s challenges stem largely from division along religious and ethnic lines, stressing the need for leadership that can unite the country.

“We need leaders who will unite us as a country. Religion and tribe should not define our future,” he said.

He called for a secure and stable Nigeria where citizens can focus on development-driven conversations.

“We need a secure Nigeria where we can discuss issues that will help us build a better future,” he added.

Addressing suggestions that he would require the backing of figures such as Nasir El-Rufai and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to win northern support, Obi acknowledged the importance of collaboration but rejected the notion that victory hinges on a few individuals.

“I will work with them so they can support the process, but Nigeria is bigger than individuals,” he said.

Instead, Obi argued that meaningful engagement with the region must focus on addressing poverty, insecurity and underdevelopment.

“If we want to secure the North, we must invest in agriculture, reduce poverty, and improve education and healthcare,” he stated.

Highlighting the economic potential of the region, he noted that agriculture could generate more revenue for Nigeria than oil if properly harnessed.

“We can make more money from agriculture than we currently make from oil, but we must start investing now,” Obi said.

Drawing from his international exposure, Obi said he has studied development models in other countries and believes similar strategies can be adapted to Nigeria.

“I have visited several countries and seen what works. We can replicate those successes here,” he added.

However, he stressed that security remains the foundation for any meaningful progress, particularly in northern Nigeria.

“You cannot achieve development without first ensuring security,” he said.

Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing political realignments and debates over coalition-building ahead of the 2027 elections, with increasing focus on how candidates can secure nationwide support in a deeply diverse country.

Eedris Abdulkareem in Edo, lauds Okpebholo on infrastructure, roads

    By Ozioruva Aliu

NIGERIAN maverick musician and entertainer, Eedris Abdulkareem, on Monday visited Edo State, where he accompanied the governor on the inspection of some projects in Edo Central Senatorial District, lauding him for trying to make the state a reference point in the country.

A statement by Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, quoted the entertainer as saying he came personally to see things for himself to confirm what he had been reading in the media.

He said, “I came to see for myself if Edo is truly working, and I must say the governor has done a lot. I have gone round and seen several projects. In the next one or two years, the achievements will be even more evident.”

The artiste also encouraged Edo indigenes, particularly those in the diaspora, to return home and witness the developments firsthand.

On his part, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to improving the state, declaring that his ultimate goal is to leave Edo better than he met it.

The governor said his administration remains focused on delivering tangible development in infrastructure, education and healthcare, driven by increased federal allocations under President Bola Tinubu.

Okpebholo said, “Eedris, thank you for coming to Edo State. When I say we will deliver 2.5 million votes for President Tinubu, people doubt it. But today, you have seen for yourself how people are coming out because of what we are doing.”

According to him, the state government is making effective use of federal allocations to deliver critical infrastructure, including roads, schools, and healthcare facilities, noting that such projects are essential to improving the quality of life for Edo residents.

“These roads are in Edo State. We must work for Edo people. You have gone round schools, roads, hospitals. These are the things our people want to see, and that is exactly what we are doing,” he added.

Also speaking, Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, described the governor as a people-oriented leader with listening ears, highlighting instances of swift government response to public concerns.

He noted that the scale and quality of ongoing projects across the state demonstrate the administration’s commitment to development, adding that more progress would be recorded as the inspection moves to Edo South.
