NUJ Condemns NBC Attempts To Gag Broadcast Houses

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has criticised the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over its recent directive to broadcasters.

The NBC had said it has observed a rise in violations of the sixth edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code across news, current affairs and political programmes.

It warned that presenters who express personal opinions as facts or bully guests on air will face sanctions.

In a statement on Monday signed by Achike Chude, its national secretary, the NUJ described the warning as “a veiled attempt to gag the media and institutionalise censorship”.

Aisha Yesufu faults FCT teachers’ strike, asks Wike to intervene

Prominent activist, Aisha Yesufu, has expressed concern over the ongoing teachers’ strike in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), calling on the minister, Nyesom Wike, to urgently intervene and resolve the crisis.

In a statement on Monday, Yesufu lamented the prolonged closure of public primary schools across the FCT, noting that the situation continues to disrupt the education of thousands of children.

She stressed that education remains a fundamental right and should not be treated with negligence, urging authorities to prioritise the welfare of both teachers and students.

“The continuous strike by teachers in the FCT is unacceptable. Our children cannot keep paying the price for unresolved issues,” she said.

The activist appealed directly to Wike to take decisive steps towards addressing the grievances of the striking teachers, including issues surrounding unpaid salaries and poor working conditions.

According to her, swift intervention by the FCT administration would not only restore academic activities but also rebuild confidence in the public education system.

The strike, which has lingered for weeks, has left many pupils at home, raising concerns among parents over the long term impact on learning.

Wike-backed PDP holds first NEC meeting after unsealing headquarters

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will on Monday (today) hold a National Executive Committee meeting, NEC, at its headquarters in Abuja, following the unsealing of the secretariat last week.

DAILY POST recalls that the party’s secretariat was sealed in November last year after a violent clash between the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee of the party and the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee, who were both laying claims to the party’s leadership.

An Appeal Court judgment in March, however, invalidated the Ibadan convention that produced the Turaki-led PDP leadership, a judgment the Abdulrahman-led PDP, which is heavily backed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, relied upon to conduct the Abuja convention.

The meeting today is expected to be attended by all members of NEC who are on the side of the Mohammed-led PDP, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, among others.

Iran Executes Two Men Accused Of Spying For Israel

Iran has executed two men convicted of cooperating with Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and planning attacks inside the country, according to the judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan.

The executions of Mohammad Masoum Shahi and Hamed Validi were carried out at dawn after their death sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court.

Iranian authorities said the men were part of a spy network linked to Mossad and had received specialised training abroad, including in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

The training reportedly covered secure communications, identifying sensitive targets, manufacturing explosive projectiles, and carrying out sabotage operations.

According to Mizan and state media reports carried by Tasnim, the pair were accused of carrying out arson attacks on military and public sites and sending video footage of their activities to handlers in exchange for cryptocurrency payments.

Officials said they were also preparing a new mission targeting public service and military centres in Tehran when they were arrested.

The men were convicted on charges including “enmity against God” and cooperation with hostile groups, a term used in Iran for serious offences against the state.

No further details about the trial process or any appeals were immediately disclosed.

The executions come amid heightened tensions in the region, including recent confrontations between Iran and the United States following the seizure of an Iranian cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as ongoing fallout from earlier Israel-Iran hostilities.

Iranian authorities described the case as part of broader efforts to dismantle espionage networks operating within the country. State media reported that the network had been under surveillance before it was assigned its latest alleged sabotage mission.

The case is the latest in a series of executions in Iran linked to alleged espionage for Israel, reflecting a long-running shadow conflict between the two countries that has intensified in recent years.

Tehran has repeatedly accused Mossad of orchestrating sabotage and targeted attacks on its security infrastructure, while Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in such operations.
