Army Arrests Blogger, Soldiers Over Alleged Incitement, Welfare Complaints

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the arrest of a social media influencer, Justice Mark Chidiebere, popularly known as “Justice Crack,” alongside some soldiers over issues linked to alleged incitement and violations of military regulations.

In a statement issued on May 2, 2026, by Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army said its attention was drawn to complaints by some soldiers concerning feeding and welfare, which were shared on social media by the blogger.

According to the statement, the matter is currently under investigation for a possible breach of the Armed Forces’ Social Media Policy, as well as an attempt to misinform the public.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the soldiers engaged in discussions with Chidiebere on a range of issues, with the influencer allegedly encouraging discontent within the ranks.”

The Army further disclosed that some of the conversations reportedly touched on issues considered subversive, raising concerns about the influence of civilians on military personnel and the potential implications for discipline and national security.

“Situations where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion have far-reaching implications on discipline and national security,” the statement noted.

The Nigerian Army said Chidiebere was arrested alongside the soldiers for investigation. While the soldiers remain in military custody, the influencer has been handed over to relevant civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Army reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, assuring that it will continue to work with appropriate agencies to ensure justice is served while safeguarding national sovereignty.

Strike: ‘Inmates languishing in prisons despite getting bail’ – Lawyer urges Abia JUSUN to call off strike

A lawyer, Mr. Victor Nwaugo, has appealed to the Abia State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, to urgently call off its strike.

Nwaugo who was speaking about the impact of the industrial action on the justice system, lamented that inmates who should have regained freedom and detainees who had been granted bail are still being held inside correctional facilities because the courts are not sitting.

The lawyer, who said that the situation is undermining access to justice, also said lawyers in Abia State are now facing economic difficulties.

He added that several litigants in the state are now in confusion as many adjourned cases in various courts cannot be attended to because of JUSUN’s disagreement with the Abia State government.

“People who should have regained their freedom remain in custody. Some have been granted bail and met their conditions, yet cannot be released because courts are not sitting,” said Nwaugo.

He urged JUSUN in Abia to reopen the courts, arguing that Abia State government has addressed most of their demands.

Nwaugo noted that Abia State judiciary workers are already enjoying financial autonomy, as according to him, the Chief Judge who is the head of the judiciary in the state has not publicly complained about financial issues.

Reacting, Abia State Chairman of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, Chinedu Ezeh, said Victor Nwaugo was speaking like an agent of the Abia State government and not as an independent lawyer, or a man of truth.

The attention of the Nigerian Army was drawn to the complaint made by some soldiers regarding their feeding and other matters relating to their welfare as posted on social media by a blogger/social media influencer, Justice Mark Chidiebere (Justice Crack).

While the matter is being investigated for breach of the Armed Forces’ Social Media Policy and an attempt to misinform the public, preliminary report reveals that the soldiers discussed wide range of issues with Justice Chidiebere who seemed to be inciting soldiers to create discontent within the system. An example was a chat bothering on subversion which Chidiebere had with the soldiers. It is important to state that a situation where civilians cultivate vulnerable personnel towards acts of subversion has far-reaching implications on discipline and national security.

Hence, Justice Chidiebere was picked by the Nigerian Army alongside the soldiers for investigation. While the soldiers remain in own custody, Chidiebere has been handed over to the relevant civil authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Nigerian Army remains committed to the rule of law and will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure justice is served. We will continue to act within the ambits of the law in safeguarding our sovereignty.

  • Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed Announces His Defection From PDP To APM

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed Announces His Defection From PDP To APM

Governor Bala Mohammed Of Bauchi State has announced his defection from PDP to APM

Mohammed announced his defection on Saturday following a meeting with political stakeholders convened to deliberate on the implications of the Supreme Court’s judgment on the PDP leadership crisis and to determine a way forward.

Speaking after the meeting, the governor said he had spent the past eight days in Abuja engaging key stakeholders in efforts to resolve the party’s internal challenges.

He noted, however, that the apex court’s verdict, which nullified parallel conventions conducted by rival factions within the PDP, had significantly altered the political landscape.

According to him, the judgment effectively stripped both factions of legal standing, leaving the party’s Board of Trustees to temporarily oversee its affairs.

He added that subsequent developments had further deepened uncertainty within the party.

“After careful consideration and wide consultations with leaders and stakeholders across the country, it has become clear that our efforts to restore stability have not yielded the desired results,” he said.

The governor expressed appreciation to the PDP for providing a platform for his political growth and service but stressed the need to move on in the interest of governance and political stability.

“However, as responsible leaders, we cannot allow our people to be left without a credible and effective political platform,” he stated.

Mohammed explained that his decision to join the APM was a strategic move aimed at ensuring political continuity and electoral success.

He described the party as a viable platform free from legal encumbrances.

He also disclosed that members of the State Executive Council interested in contesting elective offices had resigned in line with the law.

While appreciating the PDP for its role in his political journey, he said the decision to leave was driven by necessity.

“We remain PDP at heart. We are leaving not out of bitterness, but out of necessity—to continue the struggle for good governance,” the governor said.

Announcing his new political platform, Mohammed declared, “Consequently, after extensive consultations, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement.”

To ensure a smooth transition, the governor outlined measures including the establishment of a compliance committee, commencement of online membership registration, formal resignation of interested members, engagement with APM leadership, and the constitution of a committee to interface with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He urged his supporters to remain calm and united, emphasising that the move was not borne out of uncertainty but a deliberate repositioning.

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the APM, Yusuf Dantalle, formally received the governor and his supporters into the party.

Dantalle described the APM as a “clean, democratic party” guided by the motto “Nigeria First,” with principles anchored on integrity, sacrifice, and service.

He commended Mohammed’s leadership style, describing Bauchi as a state where democratic values thrive and political participation is inclusive.

The APM chairman also highlighted the party’s performance in recent local government elections, noting that it secured councillorship victories and remained competitive alongside other parties.

He assured the defectors that the party has no internal crisis, stressing that it operates strictly in accordance with its constitution.

Dantalle subsequently presented the governor with his membership card and party insignia, symbolising his formal admission into the party.

He added that the party’s symbol, the cassava plant, represents resilience, inclusiveness, and economic value, reflecting its vision for national development.

  • African Carriers Post 19.2% Traffic Growth, Outpace Global Peers – IATA

African Carriers Post 19.2% Traffic Growth, Outpace Global Peers – IATA

African airlines recorded a strong rebound in international passenger traffic in March 2026, with demand rising by 19.2 per cent year-on-year, significantly outperforming global peers, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The performance, disclosed in IATA’s March 2026 global passenger demand report, underscores Africa’s growing role in the ongoing recovery of international aviation, even as global markets faced headwinds from geopolitical tensions and airspace disruptions.

According to the report, African carriers achieved one of the strongest international traffic growth rates globally during the period. Demand expansion far outpaced capacity growth, which rose by a modest 4.2 per cent year-on-year, resulting in a sharp improvement in operational efficiency.
Load factor for African airlines climbed to 77.7 per cent in March, representing a significant increase of 9.8 percentage points compared to the same period in 2025.

The improvement reflects stronger seat utilisation and improving revenue potential for airlines across the continent.

IATA noted that the 19.2 per cent increase in international revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) placed Africa among the top-performing regions globally, while the 9.8 percentage-point rise in load factor marked one of the largest gains recorded across all markets.

“African airlines saw a 19.2% year-on-year increase in demand. Capacity was up 4.2 per cent year-on-year.

The load factor was 77.7 per cent (+9.8 ppt compared to March 2025),” the association stated.

The robust growth highlights accelerating momentum in Africa’s aviation sector, driven by the gradual restoration of international routes, increased connectivity, and rising demand for travel to and from the continent.

The continent’s strong showing comes in contrast to a slight contraction in global international passenger traffic, which declined by 0.6 per cent year-on-year in March, marking the first drop since March 2021.

The global decline was largely attributed to a sharp 60.8% fall in Middle Eastern traffic, triggered by the US–Israel–Iran war and the resulting widespread airspace closures across the region.

Despite the global dip, other regions still recorded positive growth. Airlines in Asia-Pacific posted an 11.5% increase in international demand, while European carriers recorded a 7.7 per cent rise.

North American airlines saw a more modest growth of 3.7 per cent while Latin American carriers reported a 12.1 per cent increase.

Commenting on the broader outlook, IATA Director General Willie Walsh said that, excluding the Middle East, global international demand remained resilient at approximately 8 per cent.
However, he cautioned that rising jet fuel prices and potential supply constraints could exert pressure on airline operating costs and lead to higher ticket prices in the coming months.

The latest data reinforces Africa’s emergence as a bright spot in global aviation, with sustained demand growth and improving efficiency positioning the region as a key contributor to the industry’s recovery trajectory.

  • 2027: Bolarinwa Submits Form, Vows To Tackle Insecurity In Kwara

2027: Bolarinwa Submits Form, Vows To Tackle Insecurity In Kwara

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Dr Bashir Bolarinwa, has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the state’s security challenges if elected in the 2027 general elections.

Bolarinwa made this known on Saturday in Abuja while submitting his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to party executives, formally signalling the start of his governorship campaign.

He said restoring peace, strengthening public safety, and protecting lives and property would remain central to his vision for a secure and prosperous Kwara State.

“It is my wish, by the grace of God, to improve the quality of life and health of our people. Most importantly, insecurity has taken over many parts of the state – Kwara North and Kwara South, where I come from – with several communities now deserted due to bandit attacks, leading to a humanitarian crisis.
“This is an issue that must be tackled head-on and will top our agenda,” he said.

The APC aspirant, who declared his intention to run on April 28, 2026, also stressed the importance of social services in improving citizens’ well-being.

He said access to quality healthcare, education, social welfare, and other essential services would receive priority under his administration.

According to him, governance must translate into tangible benefits for citizens, particularly in areas that directly impact their daily lives.
He added that his administration would be guided by a people-centred vision focused on expanding opportunities and delivering responsive services across the state.

“All necessary measures to improve the lives of our people, especially in agriculture, education, and healthcare, will be prioritised. I assure the people of Kwara that things will be better,” he said.

Bolarinwa also expressed confidence in his chances of emerging as governor.
“I am not just contesting; I believe I will succeed the incumbent governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who has done and continues to do commendable work for the state,” he added.

Bolarinwa’s political career includes serving as a councillor, two-term chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, and a two-term member of the House of Representatives.

He was accompanied to the submission by executives of the Egbe Omo Igbomina FCT Chapter, where he presented his forms to the APC National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Sulaiman Mohammed Argungu.
