WIP urges President Tinubu intervention over NFSS Commander Osatimehin’s detention

The World Institute for Peace, WIP, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene in the prolonged detention of the Commander-General of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, NFSS, Osatimehin Joshua Wole.

The appeal was made during a press conference held in Osogbo on Monday, where the organisation raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the detention.

Speaking at the briefing, WIP Executive Director, Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, alleged that the situation was linked to actions within the Office of the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu.

He expressed concern about the implications of the development.

Omotoyosi stated that the continued detention of the NFSS commander and some of his colleagues for about 15 days raises questions about adherence to due process.

He noted that the situation could discourage citizens from volunteering to support national security efforts across the country.

“The individuals have dedicated themselves, on a voluntary basis, to supporting security operations across Nigeria, especially in forest regions prone to banditry and kidnapping,” he said.

The organisation acknowledged efforts by President Tinubu to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework, particularly the approval of the Forest Guard initiative in May 2025.

However, it stressed the need for fairness and transparency in handling matters concerning the NFSS and its leadership.

WIP described the NFSS as “a critical grassroots security structure with more than 70,000 volunteers nationwide, contributing to intelligence gathering and community protection.”

It added that the organisation has helped bridge the gap between local communities and formal security agencies, especially in remote areas.

The group urged the President to “direct the immediate release of the detained commander, warning that continued detention could erode public trust in security institutions.”

WIP also called for presidential assent to the NFSS Bill already passed by the National Assembly, noting that it would provide a legal framework to strengthen coordination within Nigeria’s security architecture.

  • Ekiti guber: ‘We want to give opposition 16–0’ – Oyebanji boasts of victory

Ekiti guber: ‘We want to give opposition 16–0’ – Oyebanji boasts of victory

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, on Monday declared that his sterling performance in the areas of infrastructure development, human capital development, agriculture, peacebuilding, and prudent management of resources are clear evidence of his fidelity to electioneering promises, making him worthy of being entrusted with the people’s mandate for a second term in office.

Governor Oyebanji, who preached against bloodshed and violence in the impending governorship election, said he has fulfilled the social contract he signed with the citizens in 2022, which amplifies his propensity to make promises and fulfil them.

Oyebanji spoke in Oye and Ikole Ekiti on Monday at the commencement of his re-election campaign across the 16 local government areas of the state ahead of the June 20 governorship poll.

Brimming with love and solidarity, the venues of the campaign in the two local governments were filled to capacity, as residents trooped out enthusiastically, singing songs that expressed their willingness to vote for the governor for a second term.

Scores of opposition members defected to the ruling APC at the political events.

The campaign officially kicked off last Monday in Ado Ekiti with a mega rally attended by six governors, led by the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, and the National Chairman of the party, Prof Nentawe Yilwadta.

In his message to his supporters, who were adorned in Ankara bearing the governor’s portrait, Oyebanji described the coming election as a “war of votes” and not that of “guns and cutlasses,” branding other contestants as eligible sons of the state who can vie for the governorship seat.

Specifically, Oyebanji said Ikole Local Government has no reason not to reward his generosity of spirit with bountiful votes, being the council with the highest number of representatives in the State Executive Council and considering the impact of the administration in the area.

“When we came to you in 2022, we promised you infrastructure, we have delivered; we promised you roads, we have delivered. We promised you electricity, we delivered; even in health facilities and schools, we have delivered. We promised financial support for market women, we have delivered.

“Above all, we promised security, we have delivered. You knew what we had in terms of security in these councils four years ago. With the help of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the state government, we have overcome this challenge. Ekiti is now rated as the most peaceful state in Nigeria.

“Most especially, you all knew how the Itapaji-Irele-Ipao-Oke Ako corridor was in terms of security. We have been able to restore peace. If we have a government that is doing well, is it not good for it to continue?

“Most advanced countries of the world were built by continuity of government and alignment of vision. What echoes around Ekiti today is that the BAO solution is working. If you say we have done well, then let the good work continue.

“Already, we have won this election. But it goes beyond winning. Let all those who have PVCs come out and vote for APC on election day. Go home and activate your unit canvassers. Let us preach the gospel of BAO to our people.

“We want to give the opposition 16–0 by winning in all the 16 local governments, and we want to win all the 177 wards. Winning 177 wards is a record that has never been broken before. We want to set this record in this election.”

Oyebanji stated that Ekiti cannot afford to be complacent in this governorship election because of the 2027 presidential election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying other geopolitical zones are expecting the turnout of votes from the Southwest in the election. “So, we must meet our target of 500,000 votes on June 20 and increase it to 700,000 for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in January 2027,” he added.

Exuding confidence that Oyebanji will triumph with a high tally of votes across the 16 local governments, the State Chairman of the APC, Barr. Sola Elesin, said he was elated that the governor has not disappointed in the areas of performance, peacebuilding, humility, and prudent management of resources.

“What we recorded then in 2022 was a little above 200,000; our target now is 500,000. Please, let us work hard to achieve this on June 20. We can only achieve it if we troop out massively, unit by unit, on election day and vote for APC. The second term will be better than this first term, we assure you.”

Speaking for the Ikole Council, the first civilian deputy governor of the state, Chief Paul Alabi, assured that the council will return the highest number of votes in the impending poll to demonstrate support for the governor, urging the electorate not to waste their votes on the opposition.

Alabi, a respected community leader and politician, added that stakeholders, including teachers, the traditional council, traders, okada riders, widows, youths, community, and religious groups, are solidly behind the governor owing to his generosity in terms of appointments and infrastructural development.

A youth leader, Mr. Semiu Jimoh, said Oye Local Government will vote for the governor to appreciate the renovation of general hospitals, construction of the Itapa-Omu-Ijelu road, human capital development through youth in agriculture, renovation of schools, among other projects initiated in the council.

According to the timetable released by the Campaign Council, the local government tour will end on May 13.

EFCC Arraigns Fake BDC Operator For Alleged N78. 2m Fraud In Onitsha

The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned one Okeke Ejike Callistus, a fake Bureau De Change operator before Justice D. A. Onyefulu of the Anambra State High Court sitting in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Callistus was arraigned on a ten-count charge bordering on forgery and stealing to the tune of N78, 295, 000 (Seventy-eight million, Two hundred and Ninety-five thousand Naira).

Count one of the charge reads: “Mr. Okeke Ejike Callistus (trading under the name and style of Nwachimereze Amen Resources), sometime on the 2nd of May, 2024, at Onitsha, within the jurisdiction of the High Court of Anambra State, did commit a felony to wit: stealing by fraudulently converting to your personal use the sum of N62, 745, 000. 00 (Sixty-two million, Seven hundred and Forty-five thousand Naira) being property of Ezegwu Leonard Chinedu trading under the name and style of Leatez Enterprises and thereby committed an offence”.

Count two of the charge reads: “That you, Okeke Ejike Callistus (trading under the name and style of Nwachimereze Amen Resources), sometime between the 3rd to the 7th of May, 2024 at Onitsha, within the jurisdiction of the High Court of Anambra State, did commit a felony to wit: stealing by fraudulently converting to your personal use the sum of N15, 550, 000. 00 (Fifteen million, Five hundred and Fifty thousand Naira) being property of Ezegwu Leonard Chinedu and thereby committed an offence”.

The offence contravenes Section 342 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 36, Anambra State and punishable under Section 353 (12) of the same Law.

The defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the charges preferred against him by the Commission and in view of his plea, counsel to the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE II Rotimi Enitan Ajobiewe prayed the court for a trial date and for the defendant to be remanded at the facility of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

However, defence counsel, Hypolite Ohaneche informed the court about a pending bail application before it, moved it and prayed the court to admit his client to bail.

Ajobiewe opposed the bail application on the ground that “there is likelihood of the defendant jumping bail due to the fact that he previously jumped bail granted him by the Commission”.

After listening to both sides, Justice Onyefulu granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50million with two sureties. One of them must have a tax clearance certificate. The sureties must be related to the defendant, live within the jurisdiction of the court and have a National identification Number.

The defendant was arrested when a petitioner, Ezeugwu Leonard Chinedu, claimed that he gave him the sum of N78, 295, 000 for onward transmission to his business partner in China.

Instead of remitting the money, the defendant remitted some and sent telex copies of “ABA Bank of Cambodia” for the outstanding amount, which upon presentation to the partner in China, were found to be fake.

During the course of investigation, the defendant admitted receiving the said sum but added that he diverted part of the money for his personal use.

NNPC, Chinese Firms Seal Deal For Restart Of Warri, PH Refineries

The NNPC Ltd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Chinese companies, Sanjiang Chemical Company Limited and Xingcheng (Fuzhou) Industrial Park Operation and Management Co. Ltd, for collaboration through a potential Technical Equity Partnership (TEP) in support of the completion and operation of the Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries.

The MoU was signed by the Group CEO, NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari; Chairman, Sanjiang Chemical Company, Guan Jianzhong and Chairman of Xinganchen (Fuzhou) Industrial Park Operation and Management Co. Ltd, Bill Bi, in Jiaxing City, China.

The potential framework would cover completion of outstanding work at the two refineries, together with operating and maintaining both facilities to achieve best-in-class, sustainable performance.

Planned expansion and upgrades would elevate both facilities to cleaner, more profitable product standards.

The potential collaboration also contemplates expanding the refineries’ petrochemical capacities and harnessing gas and downstream opportunities through the development of co-located, gas-based industrial hubs.

Speaking shortly after the signing, the GCEO of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the MoU execution as a significant milestone, following more than six months of concerted engagement between the technical and management teams of NNPC and the two Chinese partners, Sanjiang and Xinganchen.

“All parties recognise mutually beneficial opportunities for the development and long-term sustainable profitability of NNPC’s refining assets in Nigeria, and the collective weight required for success,” Ojulari noted.

The GCEO further stated that the MoU is an important step on the journey towards identifying potential technical equity partner(s) to restart and expand NNPC’s refineries, and to explore opportunities in co-located petrochemicals and gas-based industries.

The MoU reflects the parties’ shared intent to progress discussions in good faith, with any definitive arrangements to follow in due course and subject to customary approvals.

Customers react to CBN’s new bank charges in Nigeria

Nigerian bank consumers have reacted to the kickoff of the new bank charges regime in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive.
Recall the apex bank in a circular released titled ‘Guide to Charges by Banks and Other Financial Institutions’ increased the fee for the issuance of automated teller machines to N1,500 from N1,000.

CBN also directed banks to scrap maintenance fees on Naira-dominated cards and other reviewed charges expected to take effect from May 1, 2026.

Reacting to DAILY POST, Uju Ogunbunka, President of the Bank Customers’ Association of Nigeria, said consumers would suffer more charges with regard to the upward review of the ATM issuance charge.

“Consumers will suffer more charges, but if the intention is to scrap the maintenance charge, which happened to be lower, then it makes the policy not plausible,” he told DAILY POST on Monday.

DAILY POST reports the apex bank announced the directive on new bank charges last week.
