You have to resign – Oshiomhole slams Akpabio over Senate standing orders

The Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has demanded the resignation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

This comes amid tension over the recent amendment of the Senate Standing Orders governing the election of presiding and principal officers in the upper chamber.

Oshiomhole, speaking to reports in Abuja, described the amended rules as being rooted in what he called a “moral crisis”.

He claimed that Akpabio, under the new framework being debated, no longer meets the moral and procedural threshold to continue presiding over the chamber.

Oshiomhole said, “This rule has serious moral crisis.

“The senate president became minority leader on his first term. He is now the one presiding and asking us to change those rules even those who have done one term can’t even contest.

“As we speak today, the senate president has not done eight years in office even if you count the previous one plus the current one.

“So if we pass the rule that we must do eight consecutive years before you can become senate president, it means he has to leave by example by vacating because he is presiding without acquiring necessary qualifications.”

DAILY POST reported that the Nigerian Senate has withdrawn its amendment to the Senate Standing Orders.

The reversal followed a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and adopted under the supervision of Deputy Senate President Jubril Barau.

Under the previous rules, only senators who had served two terms were eligible to contest for principal offices, and one of the two terms had to be the immediate term preceding the nomination, effectively narrowing the field of contenders.

Obedient Movement Is Different From Obidient Movement, They’re Fake

The Obidient Movement has dismissed the activities and announcement by certain individuals and groups attempting to operate under names and structure deliberately designed to create confusion around its identity and leadership.

On Thursday, a group announced itself as Obedient Movement, sacking former presidential candidate Peter Obi and others as its leaders.

However, in a statement by National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Obidient Movement stated that it recognises no parallel structure, faction, or alternative leadership outside its established and recognised leadership framework aligned with Obi.

The movement urged the public, media organisations, supporters across Nigeria and the diaspora stakeholders that any group operating under derivative deceptively similar identities does not represent the Obidient Movement, its values or its leadership.

The Obidient Movement stated that it remains a people-driven movement founded on intes accountability, justice, and the collective aspiration for a New Nigeria.

“Attemp create confusion, misrepresent the movement’s identity, or exploit its growing influence for ulterior interests will not distract us from our mission and ongoin engagement with Nigerians across all levels.

“We urge all Obidients and members of the public to remain focused, united, a guided only by communications issued through the officially recognized leade and communication channels of the movement.

“The vision of a New Nigeria remains alive, clear, and unwavering,” the Obidient Movement said.

  • Why Some Bank Dividends Are Paused And What it Means For Investors

Why Some Bank Dividends Are Paused And What it Means For Investors

There is a quiet but important shift underway in Nigeria’s banking sector, and shareholders are beginning to feel it through their dividend payouts. Several banks declared healthy profits for the financial year ended December 2025. A few proposed dividends were announced, then came the regulatory signal that the CBN reportedly withheld approval for some of those dividends until the affected banks aligned with the provisions of BOFIA to ensure prudential compliance.

The story behind the headlines is more reassuring than alarming. Nigeria’s banks are not being asked to explain a crisis but are being required to complete regulatory alignment under risk-assessment governance. The current dividend pause, and elevated impairment charges are, according to Proshare’s latest banking sector update, evidence of regulatory discipline alignment, balance-sheet repair, and capital-quality discipline rather than of banking distress.

The CBN has spent the past two years pushing the industry through a recapitalisation programme that raised about N4.65 trillion across 33 banks. With capital quantity now broadly settled, the regulator has turned attention to capital quality. That means making sure the loans on banks’ books are valued honestly, that losses are recognised promptly, and that depositors are protected before shareholders are paid.

The numbers tell the story. Across several tier-one and tier-two banks, impairment charges in 2025 totalled around N2.16 trillion. UBA recorded a loan-loss provision of N331 billion. Access Holdings increased its impairment charges by 209% to N287.3 billion. Those figures are not signs of weakness. They are signs that vulnerabilities are being recognised upfront rather than postponed.

A large part of the story sits in the oil and gas sector, where banking industry exposure is estimated at around N21 trillion at the end of 2024. Some of those exposures have entered public conversation, and lenders have taken active steps to recover value, including asset freezes and receivership filings. The willingness to disclose, provision, and litigate is itself a sign of a healthier sector, not a failing one.

For shareholders, the immediate experience is uncomfortable. A paused dividend feels like bad news. The longer-term message, however, is more constructive: a banking system that recognises losses, retains capital, and rebuilds buffers can support sustainable dividends and stronger share prices over time.

Discerning investors are reading the moment differently. They were the same investors who supported the recapitalisation cycle. They saw long-term franchise value, deeper capital buffers, and the prospect of cleaner earnings on the other side of the reset. The current pause does not change that decision mindset. If anything, it reinforces it. A bank that takes its impairment hit now is a bank with a cleaner runway tomorrow.

The informed way to read what is happening is that the system is not broken, but the rules are now being applied with more discipline. The banks that raised capital are now being asked to demonstrate that they can use that capital to absorb losses, protect depositors, and build buffers before they distribute profits.

The message, therefore, is straightforward. Nigeria’s banks are being pushed into a stricter phase of regulatory alignment. Losses are being recognised earlier, capital is being retained, recovery actions are being pursued, and transparency is improving.

The short-term effect is uncomfortable for shareholders, but only for a while. The longer-term aim is a stronger, more resilient banking system with a better foundation for sustainable investor returns. For the public, that is good news, even if it does not feel like it on dividend day.

2027: INEC wants crisis in SDP, we’ll proceed with our Bauchi convention – Gombe

Sadiq Gombe, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, of deliberately interfering in the internal affairs of the party with the aim of causing a crisis in the leadership of the opposition party.

He disclosed this during a briefing at the party secretariat on Thursday.

DAILY POST reports that the party’s former chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, had allegedly led political thugs to disrupt the party’s activities before police intervened.

Reacting, Gombe defended the suspension and expulsion of Gabam-led party officials in line with the party’s constitution.

According to him, the affected officials were accused of misconduct, financial infractions and acts contrary to the SDP constitution.

“We inaugurated a five-man committee under Air Vice Marshal Bakir Sadiq Gilmour to investigate the allegations. Those affected were officially invited to appear before the committee to defend themselves,” he said.

Gombe said Gabam allegedly failed to honour the invitation to settle internal disputes within the party.

“The committee sat daily for two weeks at the national secretariat. After reviewing the report, the NWC set up a white paper committee that recommended their expulsion from the party,” he stated.

“Our surprise and dismay is that on the eve of our convention, INEC invited us for alternative dispute resolution when we are not aware of any dispute,” he said.

He insisted that political parties have constitutional powers to manage their internal affairs, accusing the electoral body of attempting to impose leadership on the party.

“We are Nigerians. We are law-abiding citizens. Nobody will intimidate us in our own country. We are going ahead with our convention in Bauchi,” he declared.

Speaking after her adoption, Adeleye expressed gratitude to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, whom she described as a father, leader and mentor whose commitment to equity, party unity and inclusive leadership remained instrumental to the process.

The former state lawmaker also thanked the apex leaders, party stakeholders and supporters across the constituency for their confidence and unwavering support over the years, noting that her emergence reflected a collective aspiration for progress and inclusive representation as promoted by the ideals of the party.

  • Benue guber 2027: One-party state is bad for any country — Peter Adejoh

Benue guber 2027: One-party state is bad for any country — Peter Adejoh

A governorship aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Benue State, Peter Adejoh, has warned against attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adejoh, who picked his nomination form to contest the 2027 governorship election in Benue State on Thirsday, said democracy can only thrive when opposition parties are allowed to operate freely without intimidation or restriction.

Speaking shortly after obtaining the nomination form, the ADC governorship hopeful urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to remain truly independent in the discharge of its responsibilities.

“A one-party state is bad for any country. Nigeria does not need a one-party state situation,” he said.

“We need a multi-party democracy, and I urge INEC to remain truly independent in whatever they do.”

He also called on the judiciary to be fair and just in handling political matters ahead of the elections.

According to Adejoh, the “journey to rescue Benue” has already begun, adding that his administration would focus on transparency, accountability and economic transformation if elected governor.

The ADC aspirant promised to run an inclusive government that would serve all ethnic groups across the state equally.

“I’m going to be a governor for Benue State. I’m not going to be an Idoma governor, Tiv governor, Igede governor or Etulo governor,” he stated.

“There will be even distribution of wealth across the three senatorial districts of Benue State.”

Adejoh further pledged to strengthen local government autonomy, improve security and build a self-reliant economy capable of increasing the state’s internally generated revenue.

He criticized the continued delay in payment of salaries at the local government level, insisting that workers would not be owed under his administration.

According to him, insecurity, poverty and underdevelopment in many communities are direct consequences of a weakened local government system.

He added that Benue possesses abundant agricultural and mineral resources capable of transforming the state’s economy if properly harnessed.
