Sen Bomai withdraws from Yobe APC governorship race

Senator representing Yobe South, Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, has officially stepped down from the APC gubernatorial race.

The lawmaker made this known in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the decision followed a wider consultation with stakeholders, respected leaders, supporters, and citizens across the state.

“This decision was not made out of fear, weakness, or lack of capacity.

“It was made out of maturity, patriotism, and commitment to unity and progress”, he said.

Bomai acknowledged the enormous pressure from many quarters on him not to backdown, but said he prioritizes unity over personal interest.

The senator recalled how he accepted the call to contest the Yobe South senatorial seat for the third time.

“And let me say clearly; stepping into the senatorial race is not a step backward.

“It is another platform to fight for our people, to defend their interests, to attract development, empower our youths, support our women, and ensure our communities have a stronger voice at the national level”, he said.

He appreciated his supporters who believed in his gubernatorial aspiration, for their show of love, loyalty, and sacrifices, urging them to remain steadfast, united, and committed to their shared vision.

He, however, warned that politics should never divide them beyond repair.

“Elections will come and go, but the people must always remain the priority”, he emphasized.

Bomai was before now was part of the group of six aspirants who rejected the endorsement of Baba Malam Wali as APC governorship aspirant and called for direct primaries.

The group has now been depleted to 3 aspirants following the withdrawal of 3 other aspirants from the race.

The three APC governorship aspirants in the state who are now demanding for fair and transparent primary election are, Barrister Kashim Musa Tumsah, Hon. Bashir Machina and Mustapha Maihajja.

  • PenCom announces enhanced pension package for police personnel

PenCom announces enhanced pension package for police personnel

National Pension Commission, PENCOM, has announced planned proposals on enhance retirement benefits of Nigerian Police Officers under the contributory pension scheme.

The commission disclosed this in a latest policy document.

It stated that the move was to find a lasting solution to the incessant agitation to exit the contributory pension scheme over low pensions by Nigerian police retirees.

Under the approved framework, retired police officers will receive a monthly pension equivalent to 100 per cent of their final salary for life, a demand that police personnel and retirees had consistently pushed for over the years.

The package also provides for gratuity payments amounting to 200 per cent of annual emoluments, a development expected to improve retirement benefits for officers substantially.

In the same vein, under the proposed arrangement, the Federal Government is expected to increase its pension contribution for serving police officers from the current 10 to 20 per cent monthly while employee contribution remain eight per cent.

The new arrangement, which includes a monthly pension equivalent to an officer’s last salary and increased gratuity benefits, is expected to strengthen financial security for retired personnel and boost the morale of officers still in active service.

This measure is expected to significantly improve Retirement Savings Account (RSA) balances, enhance pension payouts, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of the pension structure.

If accepted by President Bola Tinubu, the police augmentation plan for police personnel will reflect the government’s recognition of the police’s critical role in maintaining national security and public order, as well as the need to ensure officers’ dignity and stability after retirement.

The development comes as organised labour movement has consistently highlighted that the enhanced CPS framework offers a more sustainable and transparent alternative to both the old Defined Benefits Scheme and the uncertainties surrounding a complete exit from the contributory system.

They argued that strengthening the current pension structure and leveraging NPF Pensions Limited’s institutional experience would better guarantee the long-term welfare and financial security of serving and retired police personnel.

Police pensioners who have been protesting against the Contributory Pension Scheme insisted that the scheme which both employers and employees to contribute monthly into Retirement Savings Accounts (RSAs) managed by Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) has worsened their welfare.

Recall that Some retirees claim they receive between N30,000 and N80,000 monthly, while others say lump-sum retirement benefits are grossly inadequate.

A major source of anger among police pensioners is the perceived disparity between the police and other security agencies.

The military, Department of State Services (DSS), and some intelligence agencies were exempted from the CPS and returned to more favourable pension arrangements, while the Nigeria Police Force remained under the scheme.

As a solution, President Bola Tinubu through the National Assembly, approved N758 billion Federal Government of Nigeria bond to clear all pension back log and arrears for all retirees including Police in 2025.

The intitiative had made life more meaningful for Nigerian retirees, just as all backlog of pension arrears from 2012 were paid and monthly pensions were enhanced.

However, pension advocates argued that instead of scrapping the CPS, the government should increase police welfare, review pension calculations, and provide supplementary retirement benefits for officers.

  • Elderly woman found dead in Lagos bush

Elderly woman found dead in Lagos bush

Residents of Oke Egan in the Ilogbo-Eremi area of Badagry, Lagos State, have been left in shock following the discovery of the body of a woman identified as Victoria Adegoke in a nearby bush.

Community sources told journalists on Sunday that the deceased, believed to be in her 60s, was allegedly found unclothed, with indications suggesting she may have been assaulted and strangled before her body was dumped at the location.

Photographs obtained from the scene reportedly showed marks suggesting that the victim’s hands may have been tied by her attackers.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, with the victim’s body said to have been discovered around 6:10 a.m.

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, said Adegoke had attended a programme at The Joy of Christ Ministry, popularly known as Ayo Jesu Church, before the incident.

According to the source, the deceased had remained around the church premises for several days because of an ongoing programme that ended a few days earlier.

“The deceased is someone I know personally. Her daughter lives abroad. She had attended a church programme and stayed around the area for some days because of the activities at the church,” the source said.

“She later stayed with one of her relatives who lives close to the church. It was while she was returning home very early in the morning that she was reportedly attacked.”

The source further alleged that the attackers removed the victim’s clothes and underwear before strangling her and abandoning her body in the bush.

“They also allegedly took away her mobile phone, but her ATM card and Bible were recovered at the scene,” the source added.

Another resident, identified simply as Adeola, described the incident as disturbing and questioned why an elderly woman would be subjected to such violence.

“She should be between 65 and 68 years old. Some passersby reportedly discovered her body in the bush and alerted the police at the Ilogbo-Eremi police post,” the resident said.

“The police are already aware of the incident, and we believe the stolen phone may help investigators trace those responsible.”

Another community member, who also requested anonymity for security reasons, described the area where the incident occurred as notorious for violent crimes and criminal activities.

“The community is located around the boundary between Lagos and Ogun states, and cases of violent attacks are not entirely new here,” the source said.

“This would be about the fourth similar incident recorded in the area. Residents are always advised to be careful, especially when moving around at odd hours.”

The source added that the victim’s condition at the scene raised suspicions that she may have been sexually assaulted before she was killed.

“She was an elderly woman and a grandmother. She was found unclothed, and it was only after the police arrived that her body was covered. Her underwear had been removed, which made many people suspect she was raped,” the source stated.

Efforts to get an official reaction from the Lagos State Police Command proved unsuccessful as the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, did not respond to calls or a WhatsApp message sent to her line as of the time this report was filed.
