  • Debt Servicing Overshadows Healthcare, Education, Obi Warns

Debt Servicing Overshadows Healthcare, Education, Obi Warns

A former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns about Nigeria’s rising debt-servicing obligations, warning that the country now spends significantly more on loan repayments than on critical sectors such as health, education, and poverty alleviation.

Obi reacted to reports that the Federal Government could spend about $11.6bn on debt servicing.

He argued that while borrowing is not entirely negative, the growing repayment burden raises concerns about how authorities utilise loans and whether they channel them into measurable economic growth and improved living standards.

He noted that debt servicing figures, estimated at between N17tn and N18tn depending on exchange rates, far exceed the combined budgetary allocations to healthcare, education, and poverty reduction.

He described the trend as a fiscal imbalance capable of undermining long-term national development.

The former Anambra State governor cited countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Indonesia as examples of economies that manage high debt levels by investing in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and innovation.

He argued that Nigeria’s borrowing history differs significantly, claiming that authorities have directed a large share of past loans toward consumption rather than productive development.

Obi said, “Nigeria’s debt stock has continued to rise under the current administration.

“Recent external borrowing commitments, including about $6bn in total external loans (comprising $5bn from First Abu Dhabi Bank in the UAE and $1bn via UK Export Finance through Citibank London), alongside a proposed $1.25bn World Bank facility and an additional $516m arranged through Deutsche Bank, bringing recent external borrowing commitments to approximately $7.8bn.

“Budgetary figures show that debt servicing, estimated at N17tn to N18tn depending on exchange rates, is nearly three times the combined allocations to health (N2.46tn), education (N2.56tn), and poverty alleviation (N865bn).”

Obi described the imbalance as a major fiscal concern, warning that debt obligations increasingly crowd out investments in human capital development.

He also expressed concern that authorities may not fully release or effectively utilise approved funds for key sectors.

Obi stressed that the key issue is not borrowing itself, but whether authorities convert borrowed funds into productivity, inclusive growth, and improved living standards.

He warned that without such outcomes, debt servicing could become a long-term structural burden on the economy.

FCMB Helps Young Nigerians Build Money Management Skills

First City Monument Bank (FCMB) has continued its financial literacy drive for secondary school students across Nigeria, helping young people build practical money management skills.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as part of the 2026 Global Money Week celebration, reached thousands of students across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The programme, themed ‘‘Smart Money Talks’’, was designed to help students understand basic financial concepts early and develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to make informed financial decisions in a complex economic environment.

Through interactive sessions in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Adamawa, Ogun, Imo, and Akwa-Ibom states, students learned about prudent resource management, budgeting, responsible spending, saving culture, and productive use of money.

The initiative reflects FCMB’s commitment to promoting quality education, financial inclusion, and poverty reduction in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Speaking on the programme, FCMB’s Divisional Head of Corporate Affairs, Diran Olojo, said financial literacy remains a critical life skill for young people.

“This initiative goes beyond teaching money management. Financial literacy empowers people, promotes responsible behaviour, and supports long-term economic inclusion.
We want to nurture a generation that is informed, self-reliant, and equipped to make sound financial choices.”

Olojo added that FCMB remains committed to investing in young Nigerians through initiatives that equip them to navigate life with confidence and responsibility.

In his lecture to students of Hasiyanda Secondary School, Kano, FCMB’s Zonal Head, North-west, Ali Yahaya, said:

“Understanding money is one of the most important life skills you can develop.
Financial literacy helps you make informed choices, avoid costly mistakes, and build a secure future regardless of your background or income level.
Saving is not just about setting money aside; it builds discipline, resilience, and long-term thinking.
Developing good financial habits early can shape opportunities and improve your future.”

He further advised students to build and earn income responsibly through creative skills, holiday jobs, and online businesses.
He also urged parents to teach their children effective financial management by saving consistently and spending wisely.

Global Money Week is an annual international awareness campaign aimed at ensuring that children and young people acquire the financial knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours necessary to make sound financial decisions and achieve financial wellbeing.

Since 2014, FCMB has provided financial education to nearly 20,000 secondary school students across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The programme also supports ongoing efforts to address low financial literacy levels in the country.

By continuing to support financial education initiatives, FCMB and the CBN are helping to raise a generation better equipped to make informed choices, manage resources responsibly and contribute meaningfully to society.

The 30-year-old revealed that he didn’t go down on his knees when he proposed to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso, because he believes that it should be a mutual decision and not one person begging on their knees.

The Grammy-nominated artiste stated this in an episode of the Timeless Podcast aired recently on Nix Network YouTube channel.

“I did not go down on my knees when proposing to my wife because I told her it was a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other,” he said.

The singer revealed that Inedoye was his former “school daughter”.

Court Grants Nasir El-Rufai N100m Bail , Surety Must Own Land In Asokoro Or Maitama

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the sum of ₦100 million with one surety in like sum.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Abdulmalik imposed a series of stringent conditions the defendant must meet before perfecting the bail.

The court held that the proposed surety must reside in either the Maitama or Asokoro districts of Abuja and must deposit the original Certificate of Occupancy of a landed property at the court registry.

The surety is also required to be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 17 and must provide evidence of salary payments for at least three months, authenticated by a letter from the manager of a bank within the jurisdiction of the court.

The court further ordered the surety to depose to an affidavit of means, enter into a bail bond, and submit a recent passport photograph to the court registry.

As part of the bail conditions, El-Rufai is to deposit all valid international passports with the court registry.

The court also directed that a verification letter from the surety’s immediate department be submitted, alongside a tax clearance certificate covering the last six months.

Justice Abdulmalik further ordered the defendant to report to the headquarters of the Department of State Services every last Friday of the month by 10 a.m. to sign an attendance register pending the determination of the case.

The judge warned that failure to comply with the conditions would lead to an automatic revocation of the bail.

The court additionally directed the defendant to submit a letter of attestation from the Chairman of the Kaduna Traditional Council.

  • Despite restraining order, ALDRAP insists on Blue Silks, says judgment contradicted Supreme Court

Despite restraining order, ALDRAP insists on Blue Silks, says judgment contradicted Supreme Court

Despite an Abuja Federal High Court judgment that stopped it from conferring the Blue Silks rank on Nigeria lawyers, the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners, ALDRAP, has said it will go ahead with the activity.

ALDRAP had introduced the Blue Silks rank as an alternative to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, title conferred on lawyers adjudged to have merited the honour.

But the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, rejected the Blue Silks rank, describing it as illegal. In the same vein, the NBA’s Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, LPPC, which is responsible for conferring the SAN title, warned that lawyers parading the Blue Silks rank risk being sanctioned for professional misconduct.

Following the threat, ALDRAP, approached an Abuja Federal High Court to protect its members’ fundamental rights, and also to stop the NBA and others from interfering in matters concerning the Blue Silks rank.

But the court, presided by Justice James Omotosho, ruled in favour of the NBA and other respondents, and went ahead to make an order of perpetual injunction restraining the applicants – ALDRAP and its Executive Secretary, Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja – from continuing to confer the Blue Silks rank.

ALDRAP had already filed a notice of appeal and stay of execution to challenge the Abuja Federal High Court judgment, arguing that Justice Omotosho should not have granted the restraining order since no prayer for such an order was before the court.

However, in a statement on Monday, the lawyers’ association said it would continue conferring the Blue Silks rank on lawyers that meet the criteria, in line with a pronouncement by the Supreme Court.

“Hon. Justice Omotosho’s judgment on the Blue Silks is a nullity, it (a judgment of the Federal High Court) cannot nullify the previous and subsisting judgments of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“Therefore ALDRAP would continue to to confer the Blue Silks rank until the Supreme Court of Nigeria reverses all its subsisting judgments on jurisdiction and Section 238 of the Nigerian Constitution,” the statement signed by ALDRAP Executive Secretary, Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja, said.

ALDRAP specifically argued that Justice Omotosho’s judgment cannot override the verdict delivered by the Supreme Court on on May 8, 2020, in Ude Jones Udeogu v. Federal Republic of Nigeria & Ors (SC. 622C/2019) [2020] NGSC.

The association went further to insist that the Abuja Federal High Court presided by Justice Omotosho lacked the jurisdiction to adjudicate on the Blue Silks row because he (Justice Omotosho) had already been confirmed for elevation to the Court of Appeal at the time he handled the suit.

“Hon. Justice Omotosho’s judgment  cannot override the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s judgment in Ude Jones Udeogu v. Federal Republic of Nigeria & Ors (SC. 622C/2019) [2020] NGSC 1 delivered on May 8, 2020.

“Therefore, the Incorporated Trustees of the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) will abide by the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s judgment and continue to hold its Blue Silks conferment ceremony until the Supreme Court reverses itself.

“Hon. Justice Omotosho lacked jurisdiction to adjudicate on ALDRAP’s Blue Silks matter as he did on 13th May 2026.

“The Supreme Court of Nigeria in landmark cases like Utih v. Onoyivwe and Ohakim v. Agbaso (2010), famously described jurisdiction as the blood that gives life to a lawsuit. If a court lacks the requisite authority to hear a case, the lawsuit is legally “dead,” akin to an animal drained of its blood. Any attempt to proceed without it is considered a futile exercise.

“The judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Omotosho remains a nullity because at time he sat on the said matter he possessed no jurisdiction having been confirmed for elevation to the Court of Appeal.

“Section 238 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 clearly states that Hon. Justice Omotosho ought to have remitted the Blue Silks matter to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for re-assisgnment to another judge so that the matter should be adjudicated de novo (afresh). See Ude Jones Udeogu v. Federal Republic of Nigeria & Ors (SC. 622C/2019) [2020] NGSC 1. In this ruling, delivered on May 8, 2020,” the statement added.

Despite restraining order, ALDRAP insists on Blue Silks, says judgment contradicted Supreme Court
