A U.S. national working in the Democratic Republic of Congo has tested positive for Ebola, the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed on Monday, as Washington moves to restrict entry from affected regions and intensify its international response to the fast-spreading outbreak.
The individual, who was working in Congo as part of aid operations, developed symptoms over the weekend and tested positive late Sunday, according to Dr Satish Pillai, the CDC’s Ebola response incident manager.
The person is being transported to Germany for treatment at a U.S. military facility. Six other U.S. nationals are also being moved for treatment or observation, including three who experienced what health officials described as high-risk contact or exposure.
The CDC invoked Title 42, a public health law that restricts entry into the United States during outbreaks of communicable diseases, for at least 30 days starting Monday.
The measure bars non-U.S. passport holders who have been in affected areas from entering the country.
Title 42 has been on the books since 1944 but has been used only twice in the modern era, the first being during the Covid-19 pandemic from March 2020 to May 2023.
The CDC said it was unaware of any exposure on international flights and noted that both Congo and Uganda have exit screening measures in place.
The outbreak, centred in Ituri Province in northeastern Congo, has recorded more than 300 suspected cases and 88 deaths. The WHO declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on Sunday.
A WHO team of 35 experts arrived in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, on Sunday alongside seven tonnes of emergency medical supplies.
Congo’s Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba announced that three treatment centres were being opened in the affected region.
Doctors Without Borders said it was preparing to rapidly scale up its response, with its emergency programme manager Trish Newport describing conditions as “extremely concerning,” citing the speed of spread across multiple health zones and across an international border in such a short timeframe.
Washington is providing support for surveillance, laboratory diagnostics, infection prevention and contact tracing through CDC offices in both countries.
A State Department spokesperson said the U.S. was working with Congo and Uganda to rapidly contain the virus and was mobilising support to key international partner organisations.

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has trained 31 lecturers of the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, Kano State, on Artificial Intelligence (AI), blockchain technology and digital research tools.
The one-day capacity-building workshop, held on Monday at the college, was aimed at improving academic research, transparency and knowledge verification.
The training exposed participants to the use of AI in academic research, digital tools for data management and blockchain applications in higher education.
Speaking at the programme, CITAD Executive Director, Y. Z. Ya’u, represented by the organisation’s Communication Officer, Ali Sabo, said the initiative was aimed at addressing the growing knowledge gap in emerging technologies across tertiary institutions in Northern Nigeria.
He explained that the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, is the fourth institution to benefit from the programme after Bayero University Kano, KHAIRUN University and Baba Ahmed University.
According to him, findings by CITAD revealed that less than 10 per cent of universities in the region currently expose students to blockchain or financial technology-related courses.
“Lagos is already being recognised as Africa’s innovation capital, while Northern Nigeria still lags behind.
“Through this programme, we are taking innovation directly to universities to enable them to integrate these technologies into their curriculum and strengthen the region’s innovation ecosystem,” he said.
Sabo added that the blockchain technology could be used beyond financial transactions, noting that institutions could deploy it to manage student records, track academic progress and improve examination processes.
A facilitator at the training and data analyst, Yusuf Babagana, said misconceptions surrounding cryptocurrency had contributed to the low level of awareness about the blockchain technology among academics.
“Some lecturers still believe cryptocurrency is a scam, and that perception discourages innovation.
“This workshop is meant to break such misconceptions and demonstrate how blockchain and fintech can contribute to societal development,” he said.
Declaring the workshop open, the provost of the college, Bashir Sabo Abubakar, described the training as a major step towards preparing lecturers for a technology-driven future.
“This is more than a workshop. It is a strategic effort to build the capacity of our staff and expose them to how technology can transform teaching, research and institutional administration,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of participants, the president of the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), FCE (T) Bichi chapter, Ali Abubakar Ali, commended CITAD for organising the programme, describing it as timely and impactful.
Some of the participants at the workshop urged higher institutions across Northern Nigeria to prioritise digital innovation training to ensure lecturers and students remain globally competitive in the evolving knowledge economy.
The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has reaffirmed that it is committed to enforcing the Federal Government’s directive mandating all Prospective Corps Members to present a compliance certificate from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank, NERD.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, stated this in his keynote address at the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Mobilization Workshop themed, “Strengthening Institutional Accountability and Compliance in the NYSC Mobilization Process for Effective Service Delivery,” held in Abuja.
He appealed to Corps Producing Institutions to adequately sensitize their students and ensure strict compliance with the initiative.
General Nafiu emphasized that the mobilization process was not the sole responsibility of the NYSC, urging regulatory bodies, security agencies, and relevant ministries to provide the necessary support through policy guidance, capacity building, and enforcement of compliance standards.
He said, “When we work in synergy, we ease the path for our Prospective Corps Members, ensuring that their transition from student to national service is smooth, transparent, and credible.
“Let us be bold in confronting the obstacles before us and creative in fashioning solutions that will stand the test of time.
“Let us build a more accountable, transparent, and efficient mobilization process for the benefit of all,” he said.
Earlier in her address, the NYSC Director, Corps Mobilization, Mrs. Rachel Ideawor, described the Pre-Mobilization Workshop as a vital platform for fostering collaboration between the Scheme, Corps Producing Institutions, and other critical stakeholders.
She noted that although significant progress had been made in enhancing the NYSC mobilization process, there was still a need to optimize service delivery across the entire mobilization value chain.
“I urge our Student Affairs Officers to approach their responsibilities with diligence and integrity, ensuring that the information provided accurately reflects the true profiles of Prospective Corps Members,” Ideawor said.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, National Universities Commission, NUC, National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Federal Ministry of Education, NERD, SIDMACH Technologies, as well as 266 Student Affairs Officers, SAOs from various Corps Producing Institutions across the country.

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested one Adeshola Muyiwa over an alleged N2,600 transfer fraud in the Agbado axis of Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
The 23-year-old suspect was said to have visited a food vendor at about 8 a.m. on Sunday at Owolanwa Junction, Agbado, purchased food items worth N2,600 and presented a fake transfer alert as proof of payment.
He was arrested at about 11:45 a.m. by officers of the Agbado Division under the leadership of the DPO, Adesanya Oyekanmi.
Confirming the arrest on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had been operating a consistent pattern of fake and scheduled transfer scams across the area, targeting unsuspecting members of the public.
Babaseyi stated that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to engaging in the fraudulent activity over a period of time, with proceeds from such acts allegedly running into approximately N10 million.
He said, “The arrest was effected on 17/05/2026 at about 1145hrs following a report that at about 0800hrs of the same date, the suspect visited a food vendor at Owolanwa Junction, Agbado, purchased food items worth Two Thousand Six Hundred Naira (₦2,600) and fraudulently presented a fake transfer alert as proof of payment.
“Prompt response and coordinated investigative action by operatives of Agbado Division led to the swift arrest of the suspect.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect had been operating a consistent pattern of fake and scheduled transfer scams across Agbado and neighbouring areas, targeting unsuspecting members of the public.”
The police spokesperson also quoted the State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, as commending the professionalism, vigilance, and operational effectiveness of officers of the division, reaffirming the command’s commitment to sustaining the fight against financial and cyber-enabled crimes across the state.
Ojajuni also advised traders, business owners, and residents to ensure strict confirmation of payment receipts via banking applications or account statements before releasing goods or services, in order to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
Meanwhile, DAILY POST learnt that the suspect was on Monday arraigned in court on a two-count charge bordering on stealing and breach of public peace.
He was granted bail of N20,000, while the case was adjourned until May 25, 2026.

Senator Idiat Adebule has secured the All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial ticket for Lagos West ahead of the 2027 general elections after emerging unopposed at the party’s primary election.
Adebule, who currently represents Lagos West Senatorial District in the Senate, was affirmed during the APC senatorial primary conducted at the Agege Stadium in Lagos State.
Delegates and party members drawn from the 11 wards in Agege Local Government participated in the affirmation exercise.
Announcing the outcome of the primary, the Returning Officer, Olugbenga Nola, said the senator emerged through the party’s direct primary process as the sole aspirant for the position.
Nola described the exercise as peaceful and transparent, noting that the process reflected the level of unity and coordination within the party structure in the district.
Reacting to the development, former Chairman of Agege Local Government, Ganiyu Egunjobi, praised party members and stakeholders for the orderly conduct of the primary.
Egunjobi, who is also seeking the APC ticket for the Lagos State House of Assembly seat in Agege Constituency I, said the successful conduct of the exercise demonstrated the spirit of cooperation among APC members in the area.
“Agege is like one big political family, and that is why our primary elections have been peaceful and successful. We congratulate Senator Adebule on her emergence and wish her success in the general elections,” he said.
Party stakeholders across the district also described the exercise as evidence of unity, consensus-building and effective grassroots mobilisation within the APC.
A member representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency, Benjamin Olabinjo, commended party supporters for their peaceful participation and urged them to sustain the same level of discipline in future party activities.
According to him, the smooth conduct of the exercise was largely due to internal consensus arrangements and the absence of opposition in the race.
The Executive Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Adenike Rosiji, also said the peaceful atmosphere surrounding the primary reflected the acceptance enjoyed by Adebule among party members.
Rosiji stated that consultations and engagements among stakeholders played a key role in ensuring unity ahead of the primary election.
Similarly, the Deputy Chairman of the APC in Ifako-Ijaiye, Gbenga Agoye, who monitored the accreditation process, said officials adhered strictly to the party’s guidelines during the exercise.
He noted that both accreditation and vote counting were conducted in accordance with laid-down procedures.
The primary election attracted a large turnout of delegates, party faithful and supporters at the Agege Stadium, while security personnel were deployed to maintain order throughout the exercise.
