Four Killed As Kenya Fuel Price Protests Turn Violent

Four people have been killed and more than 30 injured across Kenya after protests against fuel price hikes turned violent on Monday, with transport workers launching a nationwide strike that brought major cities to a standstill and left thousands of commuters stranded.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the deaths at a televised press conference, describing the violence as “unfortunate,” and said 348 people had been arrested in connection with the unrest.

One death was reported in Nakuru Town and another in Gachie, Kiambu County, where witnesses alleged that a protester was shot during clashes with police, although authorities had not formally confirmed the circumstances.

Three additional deaths were reported in Kimbo, Ruiru, after motorcycle taxi riders collided at high speed while attempting to evade a roadblock set up by protesters.

The Transport Sector Alliance, which represents matatu operators, truckers and other transport workers, called a nationwide strike from midnight Sunday, demanding a reversal of the latest fuel price increases.

Roads leading into Nairobi were blocked by striking transport operators and groups of protesters on Monday morning, with bonfires lit along major routes and vehicles prevented from entering the city. Police responded with tear gas to disperse crowds.

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud said 225 people were arrested in the capital alone, while six police officers, including himself, sustained injuries. Police said no deaths were recorded within Nairobi.

The unrest followed fuel price increases announced last week by Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, which raised diesel prices by as much as 23.5 percent to a record Sh242 per litre after a 24.2 percent increase the previous month. Petrol prices in Nairobi now stand at Sh214 per litre.

The latest increases have been linked to disruptions in global oil supply chains caused by the US-Israel conflict with Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of global oil trade passes, has remained effectively closed since February. Kenya relies heavily on fuel imports from the Gulf region.

The Transport Sector Alliance has demanded a 35 percent reduction in fuel prices, accusing the government of failing to shield citizens from rising living costs driven by global energy market pressures.

Murkomen blamed “rogue politicians” for inciting violence and warned that leaders accused of inflaming political tensions would be held responsible for lives lost during the unrest.

He said the National Treasury and the Ministries of Energy and Transport were engaged in talks with transport stakeholders aimed at resolving the crisis.

Lagos government cautions consumers against buying rotten tomatoes

The Lagos State Government has warned residents against buying or consuming spoiled tomatoes, popularly known as “Ata Esha,” over the health dangers associated with fungus-infested food products.

The warning was issued through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA, which advised consumers to avoid tomatoes with visible white, green or black fungal growth.

The General Manager of the agency, Afolabi Solebo, said fungi found on rotten tomatoes could produce dangerous toxins, including aflatoxins, which may cause serious health conditions such as liver damage and other related illnesses.

According to him, contaminated tomatoes remain harmful even after cooking, boiling or frying, as the toxins may not be completely destroyed by heat.

“a healthy person is determined by what he or she consumes from time to time,” Solebo said.

He emphasised that consumers should not compromise their health and safety because of the lower prices of spoiled food items sold in the markets.

The LASCOPA boss also urged Lagos residents to properly examine food items before buying them and avoid visibly mouldy or contaminated tomatoes and other food products.

He further advised consumers to safely dispose of spoiled food items and report the sale of unsafe, expired or contaminated products to government agencies responsible for public health, environmental safety and consumer protection.

Solebo noted that consumers have rights as well as responsibilities, including being properly informed about products and services, speaking out against unfair practices and making environmentally responsible choices.

He disclosed that monitoring and enforcement teams have already been deployed to markets across Lagos State to arrest traders involved in the sale of unsafe food products.

Man City Preparing For Guardiola Departure

Manchester City are preparing for Pep Guardiola’s exit after Sunday’s Premier League match against Aston Villa.

According to the BBC, the manager is expected to leave Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.

City maintain that Guardiola has a contract for next season and are hopeful he will remain as manager.

However, work towards his anticipated exit is under way at the club, with members of staff of the understanding he will leave.

It is understood members of the squad are also anticipating his departure after the final game of the season against Villa, while the club have turned their attentions towards how best to mark the tenure of their iconic boss.

Former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who worked under Guardiola at City, is the front-runner to replace the 55-year-old.

Guardiola has led City to 17 major trophies – and 20 in all – including six Premier League titles, the Champions League, three FA Cups and five EFL Cups during his 10 years at City.

The club’s greatest boss is widely regarded as one of the best managers of all time, and could yet still cap his stellar spell at Etihad Stadium with a seventh Premier League title, having already won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup this season.

Speculation about the manager’s future has been rife for months, with the question about his tenure at Manchester City often coming up in news conferences.

He was asked on Friday whether the following day’s trip to Wembley for the FA Cup final would be his last visit there. “No way,” he said, reminding reporters he had “one more year” on his contract.

And in an interview before Saturday’s FA Cup final, when asked if he will still be at the club next season, he replied: “Yeah.”

The ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss added: “I am here, I have a contract.”

EPL: Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher pick Player of the Season

Manchester United legend Gary Neville and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher have picked their Premier League Player of the Season.

Neville picked Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, while Carragher went for Arsenal’s Declan Rice.

The duo spoke today on the final Monday Night Football of the season.

“I could say Declan Rice, Gabriel, Bernardo Silva, but Bruno getting level on Premier League assists with Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry puts him in the very best company in terms of what the Premier League has to offer creativity,” Neville said.

“Bruno deserves it for playing and persisting in a struggling team for half the season.”

Similarly, Carragher added, “I am a huge fan of Fernandes, but you are picking a player whose games have not had any real jeopardy. I would go with Declan Rice.

“He was outstanding in the Champions League semi-finals against Atletico Madrid. He’s been a driving force for Arsenal.”

  • 2027: Obi Won’t Step Down For Jonathan, Says Lawmaker

2027: Obi Won’t Step Down For Jonathan, Says Lawmaker

Leader of the opposition caucus in the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, has dismissed speculations that Peter Obi could abandon his 2027 presidential ambition for former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ogene said the former Anambra governor remains the political symbol of Nigerian youths and women ahead of the next general election.

In an interview with THE WHISTLER, Ogene defended Obi’s decision to dump the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), saying the former Labour Party presidential candidate left the party after it became entangled in legal disputes and internal crises.

The federal lawmaker said while Obi maintains a close relationship with Jonathan and consulted him alongside other political stakeholders before taking major decisions, there was no indication the former president would stand in Obi’s way politically.

“But friendship does not obliterate the bond of being a flag bearer for the Nigerian youths and women, which Mr. Peter Obi represents today. Mr. Peter Obi consulted widely, and I know that former President Jonathan was one of those he consulted, along with several others. I do not think that former President Jonathan will ever stand in Peter Obi’s way. He would always support his political quest, just as Mr. Peter Obi supported him,” he told THE WHISTLER.

The comments come amid speculation over Jonathan’s political future following reports that a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party had cleared the former president to join the 2027 race.

Reports claimed Jonathan had completed PDP’s digital registration process and emerged as the sole aspirant expected to face the party’s screening committee.

The development also followed recent consultations between Jonathan and key opposition figures, including Obi, amid growing coalition talks within the opposition camp.

Ogene, however, maintained that Obi’s movement into the NDC was strategic and aimed at avoiding another round of litigations and internal crises similar to those that rocked both the Labour Party and the ADC.

He argued that Obi could not afford to remain in a party already weighed down by legal battles similar to the Labour Party leadership crisis involving its former national chairman, Julius Abure.

Ogene alleged that despite a Supreme Court ruling delivered on 4 April 2025 which ended Abure’s tenure, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to act until Obi left the party.

According to him, INEC waited for about eight months before recognising the court decision.

He further accused the government of encouraging instability within opposition parties, insisting that certain actions and public comments by government officials suggested deliberate interference in opposition politics.

“I do not know why you are putting conjectures. When they themselves have said openly that they are the seen hands, not unseen, that festered this crisis,” he said.

The opposition lawmaker also dismissed claims that Obi exited the ADC because he feared losing a presidential ticket contest to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, Obi could not support another arrangement that would deny the South the presidency after only one term.

He argued that the combination of former Senate President David Mark as national chairman and Atiku as a possible presidential candidate could not inspire confidence among southern politicians and many northern voters.

“How can that combination excite anybody from the South, or even fair-minded people from the North?” he asked.

On concerns that the NDC could eventually face the same internal crisis that affected the Labour Party and ADC, Ogene alleged that attempts had already begun to discredit the party’s registration status.

He, however, insisted that the NDC was not a newly created platform, explaining that the party originally applied for registration in 2017 and only became operational after a court ruling compelled INEC to recognise it.

Ogene also downplayed concerns over the absence of governors within the NDC structure. He said governors no longer possess the influence many Nigerians attributed to them.

According to him, Obi’s performance during the 2023 presidential election proved electoral victories could be achieved without entrenched political structures.

“Mr. Peter Obi’s outing in 2023, he did not even have a councillor, yet he achieved what he achieved,” he stated.

He also rejected arguments that Obi’s 2023 campaign suffered because of inadequate funding, insisting instead that what happened was “state-sponsored stealing of election results.”

The lawmaker further claimed that the next general election would be determined less by political structures and more by worsening economic realities confronting Nigerians.

“The next election is not about Peter Obi. It is about Nigerians. It is inflation that will decide. It is the cost of living that will decide. It is high petrol prices that will decide. It is insecurity that will decide,” he said.

Ogene revisited allegations of voter suppression in several parts of the country in 2023,noting that supporters of Obi had become more politically aware ahead of future elections.

Ogene also criticised aspects of the amended Electoral Act, particularly the rejection of full real-time electronic transmission of election results.

According to him, several lawmakers across party lines privately supported electronic transmission but could not openly oppose the ruling APC because of fears surrounding party loyalty and future nominations.

He nevertheless insisted that no law, no matter how imperfect, could override the collective will of Nigerians if voters remained determined to protect their mandates.

The opposition leader further disclosed that discussions were already ongoing with politicians across party lines, including members of the PDP and APC, over possible defections into the NDC ahead of the next election cycle.

“It started last week,” he said, adding that some politicians from Katsina and other states had already begun moving into alternative political platforms.

Speaking on politics in Anambra State, Ogene dismissed suggestions that Governor Charles Soludo could diminish Obi’s political influence in the state.

He argued that Soludo won re-election largely because there was no formidable opposition against him and insisted the governor could not match Obi politically in Anambra.

“Can he stand on the same podium and run an election against Mr. Peter Obi?” Ogene asked.

  • PDP Reps aspirant rejects Bauchi primary result, alleges exclusion from process

PDP Reps aspirant rejects Bauchi primary result, alleges exclusion from process

An aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency seat in Bauchi State, Godfrey Manasseh Marti, has rejected the outcome of the party’s primary election held on Sunday, insisting that no credible exercise took place in the constituency.

Marti made his position known on Monday during a press briefing held in reaction to the results announced by the chairman of the electoral committee, Ali Ibrahim.

Speaking under the theme “Unlawful Denial of Right to Participate in the PDP Primary for Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency,” Marti said he was unjustly excluded despite meeting all requirements to contest.

According to him, he duly purchased nomination and expression of interest forms, submitted all necessary documents, and paid the required fees within the stipulated timeline. However, he alleged that his name was removed from the list of cleared aspirants without explanation.

“I fulfilled all constitutional and party requirements to contest. Yet my name was arbitrarily excluded from the final list of cleared aspirants,” he said.

Marti further claimed that no screening report was issued to justify his exclusion, describing the development as a breach of the PDP Constitution, the party’s electoral guidelines, and provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) guaranteeing political participation.

He also alleged that the process reflects a broader pattern of exclusion in the constituency and called for reforms to ensure fairness and internal democracy.

The aspirant demanded an immediate reversal of his exclusion and urged the PDP leadership to reinstate him as a cleared contestant.

He also called for an independent investigation by the PDP National Working Committee into the screening and clearance process for the constituency.

Marti appealed to the party’s national leadership, including the National Working Committee (NWC), the Bauchi State PDP leadership, and the Board of Trustees, to urgently intervene, warning that unresolved grievances could undermine confidence in the party’s internal processes.

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, stressing that his concerns were aimed at strengthening the party rather than weakening it.

“This is not a fight against the party, but for the party. If we abandon our own rules, we lose the moral authority to lead,” he added.

Banigo-Harry rejects disqualification from APC senatorial primaries, seeks intervention

The Senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Ipablibo Banigo-Harry, has reacted to her disqualification from the All Progressives Congress, APC, senatorial primaries for the district.

Speaking with journalists on Monday at her ward in Obuama, Harry’s Town, Degema Local Government Area, Banigo-Harry maintained that she is still a serving senator and believes she ought to have been cleared to participate in the contest.

The former Deputy Governor of Rivers State faulted the decision, warning that the APC risks losing experienced female politicians at a time when national attention is focused on increasing women’s participation in governance.

She said, “National politics is where you have to bring out your best, so that you can also bring back the best to your state.

“I don’t want you to be agitated at all. When the time comes, you will still do the needful, and I believe that our president is very gender-positive and gender-sensitive.

“In his speech before the primaries, he advocated that women should be given a chance when they are qualified.

“I am a serving senator, a sitting and serving senator, so I do believe I should be given this respect.”

Banigo-Harry appealed for calm among her supporters while calling on the national leadership of the APC to urgently intervene in the matter and address the situation.

“By this, I’m also pleading with our great national party, the All Progressives Congress, to look into this matter and do the right thing because I’m sure they are capable of putting the records right.

“They should look at this in terms of equity, justice, fairness and gender.

“We have only four women in the National Assembly, and this is a time when we are seeking to add more.

“Those who are already there have a lot of legislative experience, which would have been needed as they move into their second tenure.”
