Abuja chef arrested for drugging employers, stealing N150m luxury items

The Nigeria Police Force said it has, through the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team, FID-IRT, arrested one John Cosmos Govi, over his involvement in a case of criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, administering suspected harmful substances, malicious damage to property, and theft involving the robbery of luxury items and valuables from a residence in Abuja.

A statement signed by DCP Anthony Okon Placid said that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, who reportedly trained at a catering school in Cotonou, Benin Republic, secured employment as a chef within the residence after establishing contact with two accomplices identified as Peter and Moses, both currently at large.

It said that findings indicate that the suspect carefully studied the routine, movements, and security structure of the residence before executing the operation on 23rd April 2026.

The police said further investigations established that food prepared within the residence was laced with a suspected sedative substance intended to incapacitate the occupants and security personnel.

“After the substance took effect, the suspect facilitated the entry of his accomplices into the residence, where the gang vandalised the CCTV monitoring system, ransacked the apartment, and carted away cash alongside twenty luxury wristwatches valued at approximately One Hundred and Fifty Million Naira,” the statement read.

It added that operatives of the FID-IRT subsequently intercepted the suspects while attempting to flee through the Gwagwalada axis en route Lagos.

“During the operation, an iPhone 17 Pro Max belonging to the victim was recovered alongside a suspected chemical substance, which has since been forwarded for forensic analysis.”

The Nigeria Police Force said that it remains committed to combating criminal activities and ensuring that all persons involved in organised crimes are brought to justice.

  • Police, FG Push Drones, CCTV Surveillance On Major Highways

Police, FG Push Drones, CCTV Surveillance On Major Highways

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on Monday, urged the Federal Ministry of Works to incorporate drone surveillance systems and mini control rooms for police operations along the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Highway.

Speaking during his visit to the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi in Abuja, the IGP stated that the police were ready to strengthen the security architecture on the highway to safeguard commuters and infrastructure once the project is completed.

The police chief emphasised the need for designated security facilities along the coastal road, including special checkpoints, patrol stations, and drone monitoring systems.

“They can deploy their drones to watch the stretch of the road. It’s a kind of mini control room for police officers on that road. We have come to remind you to include this in your plans,” he said.

According to him, the proposed facilities would enable security operatives to conduct proper monitoring of vehicles and passengers while ensuring rapid response to criminal activities along the corridor.

The police chief noted that patrol vehicles and armoured units stationed along the highway would help improve internal security and prevent criminals from exploiting isolated sections of the road.

He explained that the establishment of dedicated police checkpoints would follow global best practices, where vehicles can be safely pulled off the road for inspection without obstructing traffic flow.

“We need areas where patrol vehicles will be stationed. They can deploy their drones to watch the stretch of the road,” he added.

Disu also linked infrastructure development to improved security, stating that economic opportunities created by the road project would help reduce crime and social unrest.

He further described the over 700-kilometre coastal highway as a project attracting international attention, noting that tourists, sports enthusiasts and investors were already anticipating its completion.

The police leadership pledged continued collaboration with the Ministry of Works to ensure adequate security presence across the highway corridor during and after construction.

On his part, Umahi announced plans to deploy CCTV systems, solar lighting and security observation centres along major highways across the six geopolitical zones.

He said the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road, Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, and Eleme-Onne corridor would be among the priority routes.

“In the Third Mainland Bridge, we have provided CCTV both above the water, under the bridge and on top. We built observation centres where your people are doing very wonderful work. Response time within any location is five minutes,” he said.

Umahi also proposed the expansion of the Federal Highway Patrol into a more robust security outfit dedicated to highway protection, funded through tolling revenues.

He also suggested the creation of regulated private security outfits for VIP protection under police supervision.

“If a big man wants 100 protection officers, he can apply through these companies. Fifty per cent of the revenue will go to the Federal Government and 50 per cent to the company,” he explained.

Speaking on state policing, Umahi cautioned against possible political abuse if not properly structured.

2027: Peter Obi, Jonathan, Makinde being positioned to divide Tinubu’s southern votes – Osoba

Former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, says Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, are being positioned to divide President Bola Tinubu’s Southern votes in the 2027 general elections.

Osoba made this allegation on Sunday during the announcement of the result of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential primary at the Presidential Lodge, Abeokuta.

He charged party members not be carried away by the votes garnered by the President in the primary.

The elder statesman equally alleged that there is an underground plot to reduce Tinubu’s margin in the South ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I want to appeal to us all ahead of the coming election: let us not be caught off guard. Many people are saying we have no opponents, but that is a misleading narrative. The enemies are many.

“As we approach the next election, there is a strong gang-up against us. They are plotting to field several candidates from our region in the South. Obi has emerged, Jonathan is quietly waiting in the background, and Makinde has been grandstanding. All these appear to be attempts to divide votes from the South,” he said.
