Osun CP dismisses calls for his redeployment

The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, Ibrahim Gotan, has stated that calls for his removal in certain quarters will inspire him to be better at his job.

CP Gotan also stated that the agitation for his removal is part of the fundamental human rights of residents.

The Osun police boss stated this during a press conference at the Police Command headquarters, Osogbo on Monday.

“I am aware that some individuals have called for my redeployment out of Osun State. That is part of their fundamental rights. Having recorded the achievements within the period under review, my conscience is very clear on this,” he said.

The Commissioner stated that some persons were unhappy with his efforts at crime prevention and professional policing, adding that those benefiting from insecurity in the state might feel threatened by the command’s activities.

“You all know that in the course of crime prevention and doing my job professionally, some people are not happy and feel threatened, especially those benefiting from insecurity in the state,” Gotan said.

He explained that his primary objective was to implement the policing strategy of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at making communities across the country safe and peaceful.

“My sole intent is to implement the strategy of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which is making every nook and cranny of this country safe and peaceful,” he stated.

The police commissioner said the command had recorded successes over the past year through intelligence-led, community-oriented and visibility policing, leading to arrests and prosecutions of suspected kidnappers, armed robbers, cultists and vehicle-snatching syndicates.

He added that the command had also recovered arms and ammunition, stolen vehicles and strengthened collaboration with stakeholders and other security agencies across the state.

Gotan noted that while crime had not been completely eradicated, the command had reduced its frequency and severity through targeted operations, community cooperation and regular patrols.

“On a final note, I will continue to discharge my statutory responsibilities to ensure Osun State remains the most peaceful state in the country. Assessments from both internal and external sources rated Osun among the most peaceful states in Nigeria,” he added.

Another victim stabbed to death by suspected gang member in Calabar

A young man has been stabbed to death in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, in what residents say is a growing wave of violence linked to street gangs operating in parts of the city.

The incident occurred on Monday morning along Mary Slessor Road, where the victim was allegedly attacked following a dispute with a suspected gang member.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Akata, said the suspect traced and pursued the victim before stabbing him with a knife.

According to her, the victim was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, for medical attention but later died from his injuries.

“The victim was taken to UCTH for treatment, but was later confirmed dead by doctors. The body has been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” Akata said.

She disclosed that the suspect had been arrested, adding that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation.

The killing comes barely days after another incident that generated outrage in Calabar, with residents alleging that a young woman was murdered after being lured to an apartment by a suspect’s girlfriend.

Community members claimed the suspect attempted to dispose of parts of the victim’s body before he was apprehended by vigilantes and handed over to security operatives.

However, the police said no corpse was recovered from the premises, although investigators reportedly discovered traces of blood in the suspect’s residence.

The latest incidents have heightened concerns among residents, who say street gangs popularly known as “Skolombo Boys” are making a comeback in several parts of the city.

The groups, mostly made up of minors and teenagers, are said to occupy abandoned buildings, tunnels and public parks. Residents accuse them of engaging in violent attacks, robbery and other criminal activities, particularly at night.

Niger steps up surveillance after fresh polio and diphtheria cases

The Niger State Government has intensified disease surveillance and community sensitisation efforts following the detection of three new polio cases in Mariga and Magama Local Government Areas.

The state has also recorded cases of diphtheria in Bida, Chanchaga and Suleja LGAs, prompting health authorities to strengthen preventive measures against possible outbreaks.

As part of the response, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with UNICEF and the United States Government, organised town hall meetings for over 350 traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders across affected areas.

Speaking at the engagement, the State Immunisation Officer, Abubakar Kpantu, said the return of polio after years without a recorded case calls for greater attention to routine immunisation and disease prevention.

“For years, we had not recorded any case of polio, but recently three cases were detected in Mariga and Magama LGAs, while diphtheria cases have been reported in Suleja, Bida and Chanchaga,” he said.

Kpantu noted that health officials are also monitoring the possibility of cholera and other communicable diseases during the rainy season.

According to him, the town hall meetings were organised to improve public awareness and strengthen community response to diseases such as cholera, meningitis, measles, diphtheria and Mpox.

The meetings were held in Bida, Bosso, Chanchaga, Gbako, Gurara, Kontagora and Suleja LGAs.

In his presentation, UNICEF Social and Behaviour Change State Facilitator, Adamu Mamba, urged community leaders to encourage early reporting of suspected cases and support vaccination campaigns.

He said traditional and religious leaders have a key role to play in sharing accurate health information and mobilising residents during public health emergencies.

Mamba also called on participants to support disease prevention efforts and promote healthy practices within their communities.

  • Adeleke Faults Court Ruling On Accord Party Deregistration

Adeleke Faults Court Ruling On Accord Party Deregistration

…Alleges Breach Of Appeal Court Order

…Insists Campaign Flag-off Will Proceed As Scheduled

The Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has condemned Monday’s judgement of the Federal High Court, Abuja deregistering the Accord Party and four others.

In a swift reaction to the judgment, Adeleke described the decision as an abuse of court process and a direct violation of a subsisting order of the Court of Appeal.

The governor expressed surprise that the lower court proceeded to deliver judgment despite an order by the appellate court staying proceedings in the matter.

According to Adeleke, the Court of Appeal had already pronounced on the issue and directed that all proceedings, including the delivery of judgment, be halted pending the determination of the appeal.

He cited the records presented before Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court who delivered the judgment, showing that the Court of Appeal, on May 22, 2026, specifically stayed further proceeding on the matter.

“The delivery of the judgement is still part of the proceedings of the Court,” he stated.

The governor maintained that the judgment amounted to a disregard of the appellate court’s directive and vowed that legal steps were being taken to challenge the decision.

Adeleke, however, urged residents of Osun State and supporters of the Accord Party to remain calm, assuring them that the matter would be addressed by the Court of Appeal on Tuesday.

He said: “Efforts to stop Osun people from exercising their voting rights will fail by the special grace of Almighty God. The rule of law and humanity shall prevail at the end of the day.”

The governor added: “I call on Osun people to remain calm and be assured that our rights will be affirmed and our party, the Accord, will be on the ballot on August 15th.”

Expressing confidence in the party’s electoral prospects, Adeleke said: “We will not only be on the ballot, we will win overwhelmingly the forthcoming governorship election. We should remain calm and forge ahead with the mobilisation of our people.”

He also dismissed suggestions that the ruling would disrupt the party’s campaign activities.

“I also want to assure our people that the flag-off of our campaign is holding as scheduled tomorrow. They want to distract us. We are going ahead and we are winning this election,” the governor stated.

Adeleke further disclosed that his legal team had already commenced action to challenge the judgment.

“Our lawyers are taking all the necessary steps to right the wrong,” he said.
